Mermaid Parade & afterparty vs Make Music & afterthejump

Why does the Mermaid Parade have to be the same day musicians are playing for free all over the city including punk bands on Governors Island and blog-approved bands in Brooklyn at the After the Jump Festival?
If you do go to the Mermaid Parade, consider also going to the ball afterwards.

After the Jump festival is weak. Better than last year, but still nothing to schedule your life around.
Holland - Russia is the real event of the daytime.

My band played the Make Music festival today and didn't have a good experience. The band before us went over, so we basically had only 35 minutes to set up, play and break down after we'd lugged all our equipment out there. The contact at the venue was super-rude to us too. I guess that's what we deserve after we decided to play for free. 850 bands playing for dubious "exposure" for no money. I don't think we'll be doing this again.

my band played make music new york and had a blast... five bands played outside a bar in queens, it was sunny and beautiful, everyone was hanging out and friendly, all the bands were supercool and awesome and fun, everyone helped break down the PA and chip in for its rental cost, then we all got hammered afterwards.
You're obviously not doing something right.
