WHERE IS OBAMA AT (one of Bao's photos, altered by JB) (sorry Diplo)

No sooner does British/Sri Lankan rap goddess M.I.A. announce her engagement to WMG head Edgar Bronfman's son, rock guitarist Benjamin Brewer, then she reportedly collects $100k for a performance at an MTV Movie Awards after-party in West Hollywood sponsored by Target and Converse One Star. After the half-hour performance, M.I.A. (real name Maya Arulpragasam) jumped on top of a photo booth and told the audience how much she'd be making. "I'm going to use it to build schools in Liberia," said the politically active hip-hop performer. "It costs $52,000 to build a school for 1,000." The show wrapped up with the performer inviting women onstage to dance to "Paper Planes," including Jessica Szohr, Jessica Stroup and Rumer Willis. What, no Lindsay Lohan? Ahhh, the rich and famous in Hollywood.

$250 tickets are still available for the show M.I.A. is playing at MoMA on on June 10th. "The evening will also feature a DJ performance by 'Special Disco Version' featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem." That's at least one more school right there.

M.I.A.'s June 6th show at McCarren Pool with Holy Fuck is sold out, but the one Holy Fuck is playing later that night isn't.

M.I.A. For Vice President!

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2008 11:59 AM

If only she could adopt the same practice of pissing into her fellow musician's mouths like Black Lips do, it would be a 100% bet for MIA as Vice President.

out of curiosity, what exactly has m.i.a contributed (financially speaking) to the third world causes she promotes.

wow, marry the son of a major record exec, play exclusive shows to celebs... sounds very indie and underground to me. SELLOUT!

"I'm going to use it to build schools in Liberia... It costs $52,000 to build a school for 1,000."

Let's see. 'Schools' is plural, i.e., at least two.
$52K X 2 = $104K
$104K > $100K

(and that's not even taking into account the taxes that will be taken out of her remuneration)

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is she.

that guy is but ugly
you can do better MIA
he looks like the guy from coming to america

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2008 1:10 PM

I checked my sources and have found that it costs a lot more than $52,000 to build a school for 1,000. I don't know where M.I.A. is getting her fuzzy math.

Posted by anonymous2 | June 4, 2008 1:16 PM

i work for a company that has assisted in the construction and endowment of a much smaller school in Sierra Leone. The costs were 7 figures. I guarantee she got that figure from someone in Liberia who is hoping the cash goes through him/her. It is still a chronically corrupt place...

I dont mean to tear her down, I appreciate the awareness and spirit of her actions. But the thought of her announcing that to a crowd of drunk celebs so she and all of them can nod and pat themselves on the back is cringe-worthy. But i guess one gets more warm fuzzys saying your going to put thousands of kids through school than saying your giving 100K to a charity that needs another 900K to build a proper school for 800 kids.

>Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is she.

at best, she's a can opener. hardly a knife.

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2008 2:15 PM

Someone in Liberia is trying to scam M.I.A.? WHERE IS OBAMA AT? HURRY UP

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2008 2:23 PM

What I've learned:

1) MIA is not good at math.
2) It takes more than 52k to build a school in Liberia.
3) MIA is at best a can opener and hardly a knife.
4) MIA's fiance looks like the guy from "Coming To America".
5) Liberian charities are hopelessly corrupt.

We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost 40 years......It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supernational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries.

I was a fan, but now I think M.I.A. is a big hypocrite. She's touring rich America, she works with important producer (Timbaland), she marry a rich guy... SELLOUT

Posted by marco | June 6, 2008 5:34 AM

I have to agree with the majority here. These are empty words from an empty-headed phony. She has donated nothing of value to these causes she supposedly cares so much for. If she really meant it, she doesn't need this paycheck to do it, especially if she's marrying a billionaire for citizenship. (Let's not fool ourselves that actual love is involved here.) Why Liberia? Why not Sri Lanka, her homeland? And advertising your own philanthropy for PR when you haven't made any steps to perform it yet is disgusting, even more so when there is no credibility to back it up. I have never bought her line of garbage, I just liked the album, which is little more than pilfered from Ananda Shankar with lyrics added. She's a typical celebrity who cheated on her man, with a man who incidentally cheated on his girlfriend of 3 years to boink M.I.A. for some artistic cred. (which anyone who has met him and listened to his music would know is sorely needed.) She just wants some good press so she can make money, that's it.

Posted by icktastic | June 7, 2008 2:44 AM

oh jeez you kids wouldn't even care unless she was singing about it. the ppl sing about it so you become "aware" of it and then you eat up everything you can learn about the subject and then get mad when you find out that yur idols no longer know as much as you about the subject.
it's just really lame, i can't exactly put my finger on it, but it just seems fake.
atleast she lived through the turbulent times so she can sing whatever she wants about it, though it be a shame if too much partying made her loose her authenticity on it too.

and word who cares if the guy is rich i'd settle for 2 bill instead of 3 if it meant the guy would be cuter, i mean atleast cute and not some jerry curl guy
plus like i said before MIA can do so much better cuz she's pretty

Edgar Bronfman's son?yuck.MIA if you want a hot jew holla at me.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:51 PM

It was nothing to do with MIA it was a direct assault on the US election format and how the media deems to celebrate democracy through the two parties putting on this big show and how Mr. Obama promises change and so many people including young hipsters believe in this system. It truly isn't working and the US is heading rapidily toward George Orwell's vision of a totaltaltarian state except it isn't just the US the world elite are planning this for the whole world, right in your backyards too.
In Chantilly Virginia over a hundred global power brokers are meeting in secret to discuss the future of the planet. This list includes David Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger, the secretary general of NATO, CEO’s of the world’s biggest corporations, U.S. politicians and European royalty.
Let’s play devil’s advocate and take the debunker’s line and pretend that Bilderberg sets no policy whatsoever and is merely a talking shop for the global elite. A book signing by any one of the meeting’s attendants would warrant a handful of column inches at the very least - yet 125+ of them meeting in secret and not one mention in any U.S. mainstream media outlet?
Even to the hardened anti-conspiracy theorist this must raise troubling questions.

What are they so keen to put the lid on that they will not even dare draw attention to Bilderberg by writing a puff piece debunking anyone who ascribes power to the group?

An attack on Iran? The likely outcome of the presidential election? The consequences of the price of oil rising above and beyond Bilderberg’s stated $200 dollar a barrel target?

I only quoted Orwell because I knew it would attract attention and maybe perhaps get several people to double or i guess triple-think their gov't and the compliantcy of the media and the complacency of the people and how there is no new brilliant change coming in this staged election and in fact we are heading toward a 1984 scenario..

I really do love you all and this is why I did this.

Maya, of course, is a great person, and Ben Brewer is the real deal. And they are BOTH beautiful.

Good for them!

just checking in to see if she has built those schools yet. has she?

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 10:35 AM

Looks like she has. Maybe a school costs more than 52k, but... I've visited third world countries, and seen people get by with very little. It is possible to build a building to house 800 students for much less than 52k. I dunno how much it will cost to staff it and provide books and so on, that may all add up of course, but looks like they're off to a good start

Posted by Anonymous | October 31, 2008 7:52 PM

BULLSHIT, education needs money even in the 3rd world. What you talkin about 52k is too much and people can get by with less?? Only reason why they're getting by with less is because there isn't any thing more than that. Most og the country's economies are poor.

Things to do...

1. Be son of ultra-wealthy, Canadian executive.
2. Start rich boy "punk" band.
3. Live artsy privileged life without doing any real work.
4. Find attractive, artsy woman.
5. As insurance policy, get attractive, artsy woman pregnant.
