Hot damn, a small venue for MM... it's like 1997 all over again.

Posted by greg | June 19, 2008 10:32 AM

No wonder there is so much cocaine in this city.

Posted by SJ | June 19, 2008 10:33 AM

do you think this will be a legit show?

like a full set?

Posted by jkov | June 19, 2008 10:36 AM

ok ok, this post has been up long enough. time to take it down BV before the ticketmaster site goes down at noon. enough people have read this!

Posted by Take it down | June 19, 2008 10:36 AM

hell yeah! this is sweet. thanks for the heads up.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:36 AM

"do you think this will be a legit show?

like a full set?"

I do

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:37 AM

^^ anyone who uses the word "sweet" in a sentence not describing food doesn't deserve to go to this show!

Posted by NotSweet | June 19, 2008 10:37 AM

hear it is supposed to be 90+ minutes

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:37 AM

10:32am:

they played two nights at bowery in 2006 when they did that week of NYC shows

Posted by jason | June 19, 2008 10:37 AM

even better, they're playing with two great bands somewhere else tonight. it's not a secret though!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:43 AM

... so in 2006, they partied like it was 1997 too...?

Posted by greg | June 19, 2008 10:43 AM

modest mouse are horrible anyway. I saw them at a club half the size of MHOW maybe 6 or 7 years ago and it was painful.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:44 AM

Chill Take it Down. The show is at 1:30am on a weeknight and its 21+ over. Most hipsters have to make the early shift at McDonalds the next day.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:44 AM

10:44am

ticketmaster and the MHOW site say it's 18+ FYI

Posted by jason | June 19, 2008 10:47 AM

does anyone know the set list times for the msg show?
7pm on tickets, when do the bands go on?

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:51 AM

most hipsters don't have jobs that they have to go to in the morning.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:52 AM

"Take It Down" is a douchebag. People need to cool their heels. They think they're the only ones who deserve to hear about/attend certain shows. I hope it sells out before Take It Down gets tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:54 AM

National goes on at 7pm prompt. they play approx 40 mins.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:56 AM

ticketmaster also says it's friday june 20...

which is not today.... hmmmm......

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:57 AM

how come it's listed as 6/20 on both ticketmaster and the bowery presents sites? i realize it's technically on 6/20...

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:58 AM

1:30 am = tomorrow (friday)

Posted by a | June 19, 2008 10:59 AM

Additional Information:
This is a late night performance taking place late Thursday night (but technically Friday morning). Doors will open at 1:00am on Friday morning.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 10:59 AM

It says that it is Friday June 20th because the show is at 1:30am. It is only Thursday until midnight

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:01 AM

re: Anon 10:54. anyone who uses the word "douchebag" has obviously done his share of keg-stands in the past. how's the hedge fund going? I hope the sub-prime mortgages didn't hit you too hard.

Posted by Take it Down | June 19, 2008 11:05 AM

1:30am show time = call your guy

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:07 AM

I love the frat boy/hedge fund accusations that run wild on BV. Like they're such vile & loathesome beings. So immature.

For the record, I've only done one keg stand in my life & I don't even know what a hedge fund is. I work in the arts & as much as you'd hate to believe it, I am probably just as big an indie music fan as you, Take It Down.

I didn't realize that these frat boy Wall Street bankers had claimed the word "douchebag." My apologies. So I take back my comment. You are now a "fucking prick." And I still hope you don't get tickets.

Posted by Anon. from 10:54 | June 19, 2008 11:17 AM

hmm, waiting around mhow after the shearwater show doesnt sound like too bad an idea...

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:17 AM

I love my trust fund! You would too. Seriously. (don't I'm not too keen on frats - homoeroticism isn't my bag)

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:23 AM

So i just got a human to pick up the phone at MSG (not easy to do). This particular individual told me that doors tonight are at 7 and "the nationals" go on at 7:30. I don't know that I believe her.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:23 AM

and what exactly is wrong about working on a hedge fund? is it so frowned upon to be gainfully employed?

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:24 AM

you guys missed the best part:

"There will be no fees added on top of the ticket price."

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:26 AM

Getting yo salad tossed means getting yo asshole eaten out with jelly or syrup. I prefer syrup.

Posted by Tossed Salad Man | June 19, 2008 11:26 AM

the last National newsletter sent out on 6/13 says this.

June 19 - New York, NY - Madison Square Garden
Doors: 6pm
The National: 7pm

they went on at 7 at jones beach and pretty much every date they go on at 6:30 or 7. think about it, MSG has a curfew, REM is playing just under 2 hours and there's two openers.

don't be LATE!

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:27 AM

I work at a hedge fund and it's actually doing quite well! Which is great news, given the challenging markets.

I like decent music, and BV usually tips me off to upcoming concerts. Very nice of them.

I wasn't in a fraternity; however, I've done several kegstands in my day.

I like to refer to hipsters as douchebags.

And, unfortunately for all you whiners out there - I have every right to be on this blog, and at concerts from the bands you supposedly "discovered".

So please, lose the sense of entitlement.

Thank you and best regards,

The guy you'll complain about on this board after the next concert you attend

Posted by Anon 11:33 | June 19, 2008 11:27 AM

i was really hoping you wouldn't post this

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:29 AM

11:27 - thanks a bunch. I figured 7 p.m. was right and that the human being at MSG was ill-informed.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:29 AM

11:29 - post what?

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:34 AM

for the record, "fucking prick" is much better. and yes, working at a hedge fund and doing keg stands makes you a "fucking prick". you should be hungover from drinking Guinness with your hedge-mates at some yuppie irish bar last night instead of reading music blogs. Sure you have every right to come to the show. Let's make sure the air conditioning is just right for you and there will be plenty of cabs to take you back home to your condo in Tribeca! sorry, no valet parking though.

Posted by Take it Down | June 19, 2008 11:40 AM

take it down, you are an idiot. Ranting and raving, with the occasional quip does not get your point across. What point are you trying to even make? Moron.

Posted by take it down is an idiot | June 19, 2008 11:43 AM

sold out.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:48 AM

not sold out. not on sale yet.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:48 AM

Take It Down is the reason people hate hipsters. What about living in a roach-infested fourth floor walk-up makes you better or more authentic than the hedge fund guy? It just makes you financially poor. I don't get this. Just because someone gets a good job doesn't mean they have to stop liking "indie" music. For fuck's sake. Get over yourself. You're more of a cliche than the hedge fund guy anyway.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a struggling artist whose income is probably much closer to Take It Down's than to the Hedge Fund Guy.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:55 AM

Are you in high school, Take It Down? You're just embarrassing yourself. You're obviously sheltered and immature and you would benefit greatly by relaxing a bit and not going off on people you don't know based on their profession or where they live. You're just not a good person if you hate on people so blindly. Stop with the senseless posts and grow up.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 11:56 AM

Hahaha Take it Down, I love it. Why do you care what I do for a living? And how can you assume anything about me based on that?

What do you do?

Anyway, I'll probably take the L train home as I live in a co-op near Union Square and don't have a car.

BP just sent out a mass email.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:01 PM

I apologize for being mean. really. it's great that everyone appreciates good music. For my part, I grew up here and remember when the divisions in society were much clearer... so that if you were a fratboy who worked on Wall Street, you would rather pay $80 to see the Rolling Stones or something like that and small shows like this weren't on your radar.

the digital age has broken down all those divisions and stereotypes. I need to learn to accept and embrace that.

is REM really opening? this would make my life...

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:05 PM

First: MSG sent oout an e-mail that said doors 6:00, show approximately 7:00. It wasn't very specific.

Second: Though I think Take It Down is getting some of his social iconography wrong (likely just the result of youth)and evidence suggests he would be unpleasant company, I think he's on fairly solid footing that douchebag connotes yuppie more than hipster.

I say this as someone who is niether.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:05 PM

I bet Take It Down didn't grow up here

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:09 PM

it will be sold out in next second....4 tickets weren't available...but 1 was...

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:11 PM

Take it Down, the birth of yupsters is confusing to a lot of people. And lets not forget the Grups. It is not like the 70's when it was about social outcasts
and outsiders hating on society. Now it is society.

MSG Set Times:
7:00-7:40pm: The National
8:05-8:55pm: Modest Mouse
9:25-11:25pm: REM

Posted by jan janson | June 19, 2008 12:25 PM

I got an extra but whats reasonable? 150? 200?

And yes i am hearing these whispers as well. I just got a call from someone in the know. R.E.M. is going to probably be there and play a set. Not sure if it is before or after Modest Mouse though.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:27 PM

I will see enough Modest Mice at MSG opening for the
legends known as R.E.M.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:28 PM

REM at 3:30 am, lol. how appropriate.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:29 PM

think they'll play float on and dashboard at a small show like this?

would be great if they skipped those songs and played only their best

Posted by Cowboy Cockroach | June 19, 2008 12:33 PM

I think it will be fairly fantastic show, if REM show up. Otherwise, meh.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 12:35 PM

i will sell my extra for $3,456,256,243.67

hedge fund guy, are you interested?

this conversation is interesting. let's keep it going. but i'd like to hear some more diverse view points.

tossed salad man, do you have anything to add at this juncture?

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 1:17 PM

Bjorn, I don't want the tickets as I only pay face (with the exception of Radiohead).

And 12:27, 1:05's right, you're a way bigger prick than me. Totally fair to judge you on your desire to scalp tickets.

Posted by Hedge Fund Guy | June 19, 2008 1:20 PM

no

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 1:21 PM

If anyone here is a nice person and wants to sell tickets to someone whose favorite band is Modest Mouse but was unable to get tickets for tonight's show because of a computer freeze, please email me at @sale-725365345@craigslist.org (I've made the same plea on CL).

I live in WBurg, work in Manhattan, and will come to you with cash. I would ideally like three, but would settle for two.

Remember, I would do it for you--and I have in the past, i.e., sell unwanted tickets at face value. If you are looking to make a little bit of cash ($10-15) for your trouble, I won't begrudge you that.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 1:26 PM

there's nothing wrong with scalping tickets, you Commie.

the problem is that many scalpers have these automated computer progs that allows them to purchase tix through ticketmaster right when they go onsale -- now THAT is cheating.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 1:27 PM

Are there still tickets available for the MSG show?

Thanks take it down for the boost in queens pride. Really.

They are pretty and all , like the ones in Edward Scissorhands.. but other than that I think its a poor investment.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/2008/06/19/2008-06-19_80s_icons_rem_and_johnny_marr_hit_madiso.html

Now Bill Berry should join Morrissey's band.

i work for a hedge fund and i grew up on negative approach and bad brains.

my dad's a carpenter. my mom's a bookkeeper. its not my fault you opted for that philosophy degree.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 2:20 PM

the hedge fund frat boys are defensive due to their own insecurity. The reason I mentioned hedge funds is because they are a huge, unregulated scam. You don't have to be intelligent to work at one just have the right connections and be a great "yes" man. Working at a hedge fund is the modern day equivalent of unionized factory work in NYC, you are essentially an automaton.

If anyone here is an actual economist or works in strategy or marketing, I give you much respect. Those fields actually require brains, creativity and wit. But hedge funds are for dumb ass keg-standing frat boys with no brains, no creativity or independent initiative and all the fraternity connections they need to sustain them for life.

my guess, and yes, it's only a guess, is your some lil pus-bucket that missed out and really, if you are gonna be so age-ist, stick to pussycat doll shows, maybe some vampire weekend, bloc party might be OK for you too.

good music stands the test of time.
you will learn this, but you'll have to grow up a bit first.

I've always assumed most poeple on this site (and most people who really know their music) are in their 30's. It's just that when you get there you have too good a BS sensor to bother engaging in all the mastabatory unearned cynicism the kiddies like to dress up with.

But, one must forgive them. They'll realize how they undermine themselves when they have the perspective to do so. . . .

"the hedge fund frat boys are defensive due to their own insecurity . . . blah blah"

Take it Down, why the hostility toward hedge funds? Do you work at one? How do you know how they work? I wasn't in a fraternity, and am at a successful hedge fund but am not using "connections" to make money.

You'd give respect to people who work in marketing over people who make money at hedge funds??

Did you rush a fraternity, get violated anally, and have your life savings lost by some no-name hedge fund or something? Why the hostility and snap judgments of people? Seriously man, I think that with a few years of therapy, you could get through these issues. Or at least become a bit more content with whatever it is you do and however much you make doing it.

you can all suck my wrinkled ass 56 year old dick at the Modest Mouse shows tonight. just please make a nice line. i promise I'm hip as hell. oh, and I don't wash a lot.

for the record, im at peace with my job as a portfolio manager at a hedge fund. we dont build anything so i merely take long and short positions in companies and trends throughout the world.

i try to make money when you get fired. i try to make money when you signed a mortgage you cant pay for. i try to make money when you buy an iphone.

i know what copper prices look like in India, i know what mines are susceptible to flooding in Canada, i know what sneakers are popular in China...it's a fascinating job.

don't knock it if you can't hack it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 4:37 PM

i think money is tight, or at least a necessity to this lifestyle of living in nyc and attending "rock concerts."

i skate daily, play and listen to "indie rock" music, and "work" at a mutual fund company where i lurk around BV frequently and watch lots of skate videos on the internet. i don't think that anyone is automatically a douche due to their chosen profession.

hedge fund guy, can you get me a job, though, my pay is not commensurate with the bullshit i endure or the value of my time????

my BA is in english w/ a minor in philosophy. liberal arts are hecka tight.

somebody pay me! nyc is dumb expensive! why do we live here? i tell myself that i need health insurance in case i lose it at my dumb job and injure myself!

what would i prefer to do?

uh, write wussy poems, skateboard, draw pictures, play my guitar to the people, but none of those things are jobs...

so if you have to work, may as well get compensated for your time. it beats paying 83% of your income as a ___________ to your landlord for your shitty apartment.

now, let's review: transplants are douches, natives are elitist douches, rich people are insecure douches, poor people are jealous douches, modest mouse are douches, crystal castles are douches, hedge fund guy is a douche, take it down is a douche, and oh, yeah, i am a douche, too.

in summation: Deacon/Cox Dream Team Ticket 2008!

Of course working at a hedge fun doesn't automatically make someone as asshole, but don't you at least have to have a sense of humor about the fact that people will think that? Just like like not all hipsters are posers or whatever, but you've got at least accept the stereotype on some level.

Wouldn't be be better to respond as an individual with opinions than by defending the honor of types?

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 4:50 PM

Is this where we're "supposed" to write about tonight's potentially fantastic show? Walking out to a sunrise after 12 minutes of Spitting Venom?

I didn't think so. Pitiful.

"'"guys this is gonna be so pathetic. no one under 35 there, for sure"

you make me laugh. HAAAAAAAAAA

i'm 35 years old and yes i'm going. cause i got a ticket and sounds like you didn't. guess i shouldn't go to shows anymore too old. is that the deal? why see dylan in brooklyn then? or Led Zep when they reunited for a show in London'"

The sound of a 30 and up show sounds great to me. Older people tend to go for the music only, not to gab to their dirty attention whoring hipster girlfriends/boyfriends. Wish I was going, damnit!

someone at 5:02PM - you win. best post so far. fuck 'em!

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:04 PM

im 23.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:06 PM

I'm 23 too, and sometimes even I feel old at some of these Britpop shows littered with jittery 14-year-old girls who just stare blankly at the stage.

Ditto for all the asian girls who are always clustered right by the stage at virtually every show I go too....

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:11 PM

Ditto for the 6'5" frat boys who are always clustered right by the stage at virtually every show I go too....

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:13 PM

"Ditto for all the asian girls who are always clustered right by the stage at virtually every show I go too...."

now that's racist.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:13 PM

Oooh, hey guys, we forgot to hate on the tall people!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:13 PM

its not racist if at literally every show I go to there's a group of 6 or 7 asian girls positioned right by the center of the stage, who just stand still, and only move to take the occasional picture with their SLR (and they are not credited photogs)

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:16 PM

^^^^^^^dSLR, douche

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:23 PM

"Oh my God! Oh my God! My twin brother has been shot! I think it was an Asian gang or something... There was this guy, he looked Asian... and he was speaking another language, I'm pretty sure it was... Asian."

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:32 PM

i saw them open for r.e.m. not worth paying above face guys. it was pretty much all bla songs. not sick shit like teeth like god's shoeshine.

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:53 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 19, 2008 5:54 PM

"why the hostility toward hedge funds"

Nothing wrong with operating in total secrecy to manipulate the stock market, using naked short selling and stock counterfeiting to keep the rich rich and the average investor duped. To say otherwise would be downright unamerican.

"Nothing wrong with operating in total secrecy to manipulate the stock market, using naked short selling and stock counterfeiting to keep the rich rich and the average investor duped."

Don't forget the fact that they take advantage of a loophole that allows them to pay (much lower) capital gains taxes on their income (as opposed to the regular federal income tax that everyone else pays).

money gives my tiny dick a blood rush! the average investor can suck from my ass with a straw!

One of the best shows of the year was tonight! They kicked ass from start to finish. Went on at 2:30a and was literally told they had to stop at a few minutes past 4am. You could tell they weren't ready to leave the stage. Really a perfect show with more old stuff and only a handful off of the newest. Johnny Marr is one hell of an addition to MM.

Hopefully someone will post a set list!

Off to work...

just back from the modest mouse show. not going to lie -- i really didn't enjoy it. i guess bigger diehard fans might have, but it seemed like the most underwhelming generic jam band crap from a few guys dead tired and not knowing when to stop playing. the fact that it didn't start until 2:30 and cutting the show short (bars have to close at 4) didn't help. or maybe it did, because it seemed to be dragging on forever and ever. in all, i think the band is too "big" for a place like mhow.

i'm sure some people are going to come out calling it the daft punk of 2008 and whatnot, but i just didn't get that impression.

Show of the year so far.....Issac was drunk and he was loving every minute of the show! 11 minutes of tiny cities was definitely worth 20 dollars alone....Issac going insane/coming down to the crowd....(don't know what he was saying but it sure made everyone happy)

p.s. for everyone that stayed till 2:30am (i say about 30-40 of you) to get in...congrats!!! right as we walked in, they're playing their first song and it was trucker's atlas....

i think after seeing sigur ros twice, modest mouse twice, rem and the national once....i don't know if i can handle the cure and my morning jacket this week....

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 8:54 AM

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 8:58 AM

they played about about four songs, the total of which seemed to stretch on for 90 minutes...

when did the band a self indulgent jam band?

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 9:03 AM

^^^ ummm... about 10 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 9:15 AM

so glad that the comments section will be filled with people who didn't enjoy the show because they aren't very big fans of modest mouse but are d-bags and horny and fuck you and where is taco time for mom and dad?

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 9:21 AM

They opened with Trucker's Atlas, and followed with Breakthrough. also played Dramamine, Wild Pack,Tiny Cities, Paper Thin Walls, Good Times Are Killing Me, Dashboard, Fire It Up, Dancehall, and definitely a few others.

So, yeah, they did some old stuff, which was great.
