Pearl Jam have the best fans in the world, no questions asked. What an amazing experience, I don't think I can say which night it was better. [Metro Distortion]Legendary? Generic? Amazing? Music for "frat tools"? Whatever you think, Eddie Vedder and band played their 2nd of two sold out shows at the Garden last night (June 25, 2008). The pictures in this post are from night one (June 24).
I heard Ted Leo and the Pharmacists sounded great playing their opening set in the large room. No pictures unfortunately because MSG is strict and confusing with the credentials and Eric was only allowed in during Pearl Jam's set. More of those pics and some oher stuff below.....

Pearl Jam gave a nod to its classic rock influences last night (June 25) in New York, drafting Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and Ramones bassist C.J. Ramone for guest appearances during the second of a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden.Frehley turned up to play lead guitar on Kiss' "Black Diamond," which was mostly sung by drummer Matt Cameron, with guitarist Mike McCready, an admitted Frehley obsessive, handling the first verse.
As he'd done the night before, Ramone thundered through his former band's "I Believe in Miracles" with Pearl Jam. Frontman Eddie Vedder also saluted his guitar tech, Ricky Ramone, who had long worked for the late Johnny Ramone before joining Pearl Jam. [Billboard]

Music for frat tools sounds about right.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 11:55 AM
11:55 either doesn't remember 1991, or will claim he was listening exclusively to stephen malkmus's homemade cassette demos.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 11:57 AM
pearl jam still sucked in 1991. MJ was the jamz.

"11:55 either doesn't remember 1991, or will claim he was listening exclusively to stephen malkmus's homemade cassette demos."
ha ha agreed. even though there were a lot of stuff frat boys at this show, this band did play a very important role in the early 90s grunge era. im not a huge fan of pj, but they are definitely the shit
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 12:05 PM
i remember 1991, pearl jam were put together by a corporation to capitalize on the grunge craze after that guy from mother love bone died.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 12:12 PM
12:12, what the hell are you talking about? PJ, love them or hate them, were the product of local musicians collaborating, passing tapes around, having jam sessions. temple of the dog preceded PJ, they all played with Chris Cornell, and Matt Cameron was drumming for that one i believe. EV's tape was passed to the band by Irons, the chili peppers / sometime PJ drummer. grunge was a local scene, a community, before mall culture coopted the whole thing and killed it.
as for frat kids at PJ shows. there are frat kids at Ranconteurs shows, at white stripes shows. i remember a few at a fucking Versus/mates of state show a few years back. you know what? frat kids also wear pants. maybe we should all stop wearing pants now, because frat kids made them passe. here's to crowd surfing in kilts!

The volume for Ted Leo was way too high, actually painful. Pearl Jam mix was better, but drowned out by the fans. They were great but when everyone and their idiot girlfriend is singing along with "Better Man" (but knew nothing off any of the last 3 records) it's time to hit the bathroom.

the best part of the show was when eddie and stone played free bird.......

Wow. Ace Frehley?!?! Now I'm sorry I didn't go.... maybe not... Oh fuck, I don't know...

Ed reads bv, I mean how else would he know about the Coldplay short set / free show controversy, seriously, he mentioned it during last nights show.

I bet Dethklok was better

GREAT shows- Night 2 a bit stronger but over all a blast- beat the shit out of teh DC vibe. Next stop Hartford
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 12:44 PM
I think I liked Night 1 a bit better, but both were great shows, about 2:45 each.
Off to Hartford....then, the Beacon theatre!

pearl jams show on wednesday was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Between cj and ricky ramone and ace frehleys surprise visits, this one will go down in pj history, not only because of its guest appearances, but people... this was madison square garden! The fans are amazing here every time!! Keep on Rockin!
Posted by Jessica | June 26, 2008 1:05 PM
I don't really consider myself a die-hard fan...I mean, I like Pearl Jam as much as the next guy who stopped listening to them after "Vitalogy"...but man, they rocked the SHIT out of the Garden that first night.
They really do have the greatest fans in the world. Call them frat boys, tools or whatever you want...they fucking love that band. And although you wouldn't think it, that fact alone makes a Pearl Jam concert such an amazing experience (particularly at a venue like MSG). If you didn't get the chance to see them, I would highly recommend checking them out next time they come through town. It's worth it.

Since when does Lorne Michaels play guitar for Pearl Jam?
Posted by Martin | June 26, 2008 1:27 PM
that doesn't look in the slightest bit like lorne michaels

frat boys?
wow some of you haven't gotten over getting made fun of in high school
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:54 PM
the audience was full of squid brains
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:13 PM
1:54...HA! So true. The 'frat guy' hating on this site is hilarious.
Am I the only one on earth who was slightly let down by this show (I went Tuesday)? MSG was awesomely packed, the crowd absolutely rocked, and Eddie Vedder easily hammered home the title of "Rock God"....I mean, he absolutely killed it.
But I gotta say I was slightly let down by the band (NOT Eddie). I mean, there were several points where they audibly f-d up parts, missed the timing, or resorted to incredibly lame endings/transitions after meandering solos. Hendrix would have turned over in his grave if he saw McCready go for the 'behind-the-back solo' and basically miss every note. I was actually kinda embarassed for the guy.
Is there any dispute that this band would be absolutely NOTHING without EV?
This was my first PJ show, and I honestly went in expecting an A (maybe my problem) and I think the show was a solid B+/A- (Still good). I gotta be honest, I think My Morning Jacket put on a better overall show Friday at Radio City.
ANYONE out there with me? Anyone?
...maybe not.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:14 PM
you right, Vedder carries Pearl Jam, just like Jim James makes MMJ interesting.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:24 PM
i should add, Ed made many political statements during both nights and no one was booing or anything.
Pearl Jam fans are a mixed bag, but this crowd was better than average, much better than what youd get in NJ or Camden. also dedicated songs both nights to George Carlin.
btw, security was strict but I still managed to take about 4 hours of film footage over two nights, so that was good.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:26 PM
Both shows were saaaweeeeeet.
Posted by PeaCOCK | June 26, 2008 2:31 PM
Pearl Jam can sell out two shows at MSG-so can Bon Jovi.
Is that picture from Jim Farber's glowing "Vedder then Ever" review in the Daily News?It is kind of cute how Eddie Vedder's biggest groupies include the rock critics from the NYC's two rags. The same critics who for some reason despise Michael
Stipe and REM.
Atleast REM performed 10 brand new songs from their hot new album at msg.Sounds like PJ are now a feel good oldies act for frat boys, suburban dads and the post-grunge/nu metal cock sockers they influence.

for what its worth i wa standing next to a hedge fund banker, in front of me were some trust fund hipsters, and to the right of me was Dan Deacon!
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:14 PM
what time did Kanye go on?
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:25 PM
I was that Dan Deacon
Posted by Dan Deacon | June 26, 2008 3:35 PM
i love thinking about how 99% of PJ's fans disagree 100% with Eddie Chedder's politics
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:41 PM
Um, i'm pretty sure you're completely and utterly wrong about that 99% quote... if you look at how crowds reacted to ed's musings the last few tours vs. both nights in MSG...well...there's your answer me thinks. but tell yourself whatever you wish. I know i was belting out both nights to NO MORE WAR!!!!
with our minds we're saying...NO MORE
with our hearts we're saying...NO MORE
with our lives we're saying...NO MORE WAR
no more innocents dying
no more terrorizing
no more eulogizing
no more evangelizing
no more Presidents lying
NO MORE WAR.
GO PJ!

Why do they cut beer sales at MSG so early? I was flowing (HARD) but started fading (FAST) during the encores.
Posted by Big Floppy Donkey Dick | June 26, 2008 3:50 PM
Is Eddie still calling a Ramone on the phone and doing "I believe in Miracles" to him?
He did that the last time they played MSG too,and that schtick is becoming kind of cheesy.

1:54 - there were frats in high school?
Posted by anon | June 26, 2008 3:57 PM
3:57, the implication is that many of the whiners on this site who like to think they are entitled to see all music, and were the first to discover it, are the same type of whiny dorks in high school who were picked on by jocks who joined frats and got good jobs to afford any concert they wanted.
So yeah, seems there's some underlying resentment there, based on the frat/yuppie hate on BV.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:15 PM
4:15,the mass migration of yuppies here in the last 7 years is what is wrong with NYC.
I also doubt that high school frat tools got such good jobs.A brainy computer nerd has a better paying job then some belchy frat tool.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:24 PM
I belch all over you twee hipster milksops. I have a big jaw, massive pythons, roid rage and shrivelled testicles.
I am BRO, hear me roar.
Posted by BROSEPHUS | June 26, 2008 5:00 PM
I think the mass migration of hipsters is more of a problem than yuppies. If one hates yuppies, one should move to a city that isn't the advertising and financial center of the country.
Anyway, the frat guys seem to have connections that help them get good jobs.
Posted by 4:15 | June 26, 2008 5:33 PM
Hipsters, yuppies, trust fund babies or frat boys. Call us what you want, but in John McCain's America we're all elitists.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 5:42 PM
@ Anon 3:57 PM
Who the fuck cares what Marky Ramone thinks? He's a hateful, closed-minded hack, who exists only because he was a replacement Ramone. Dude is a huge meathead with dumb opinions on everything.
BV comments are bottom of the barrel shit man. And you know everyone caught up on the retarded yuppie, hippie, hipster, fratty, whatever nonsense doesn't know any of these people anyway cause they spend all fucking day getting into fights on the Internet. Get a life tools. Its not only old, unoriginal, and not funny, its as played out as your gay retread about what time daft punk is coming on.
Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 7:18 PM
"Ed reads bv, I mean how else would he know about the Coldplay short set / free show controversy, seriously, he mentioned it during last nights show."
uh, Chris Martin was at the show and hanging out backstage.
I highly doubt EV reads Brooklyn Vegan.

i don't get why people spend time hating pearl jam...they're at least pretty good. they're the biggest festival draw even with less promotion then your local garage bands. they've done things their own way and probably are the most charitable band around. they care deeply about music in general, their fans, and the world they live in. are they groundbreaking? no, most bands aren't (keep in mind there is a difference between "sucking" and breaking ground). though them made alot of thoughtful and well executed material. maybe its just because you're bitter. because eddie vedder and co. were born with the talent that you need to get all those earth shattering sounds out of your head and on tape. and its just not fair is it? anyway, despite all the negativity from various sources it was great seeing ted and ed in the same building on the same night. (ps most real pj fans don't like the frat kids either but considering names like dylan, springsteen, townshend, hewson, jagger, stipe, ramone and yes, Tom Brady can be found among the bands other supporters; i wouldn't lose sleep over it)
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 3:03 AM
Cute speech there 3:03. What you don't get though is that Pearl Jam are not liked because he sings like he's got a mouth full of potatoes.

Posted by Deb | June 27, 2008 8:16 AM
hi 4:30, thanks my speech was rather adorable and seems like you couldn't refute it so i guess sarcasm would be the only reasonable response. potatoe mouth or not, he's got a great voice that many have admired for years (some of whom are listed above). so you'll have to pardon me if your opinion then comes off more as bitter then pointed critique. regardless, i generally don't get involved in message board squabbles so i think its best i end my involvement. not the best place for a productive discussion/debate.

I heard Chris Martin was in attendance.
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 4:51 PM
From Sterogum.com
Side note: I mentioned Chris Martin’s attendance at last night’s gig in this morning’s Coldplay post, and commenter grace6697 mentioned EdVed tooled on Coldplay’s free MSG gig? Anyone know exactly what he said? I hope for Chris Martin’s sake Eddie wasn’t actually poking fun, seeing as he’s one of Chris’s heroes and the guy is totally derailed by slams like that (he’s still smarting over the “you know how I know you’re gay” business, for one of many).
The ’slight’ was…
it was nothing coldplay’s gonna slit his pretty little wrists over.
near the beginning of the night, ed basically said that tonight people were gonna get their moneys worth cuz it was no free concert. oh how we laffed and laffed.

Who cares about the crap you people are spouting off on.....
Some people just like Pearl Jam's music. Regardless of who their fans are. Its a lot more than grunge. Its becoming classic Rock and Roll and they are one of the few truly great live Bands of this generation.
