PS 1

P.F.1 (Public Farm One) is an urban farm concept that evokes the look of a flying carpet landing in the P.S.1 courtyard. Constructed from large cardboard tubes, its top surface will be a working farm, blooming with a variety of vegetables and plants. The structure will create a textured, colorful, and constantly changing surface in contrast with P.S.1's angular concrete and gravel courtyard. P.F.1 will work as an interactive bridge between outside and inside, creating multiple zones of activity including swings, fans, sound effects, innovative seating areas, and a refreshing pool at its center. The installation will be a living structure made from inexpensive and sustainable materials recyclable after its use at P.S.1....
P.S.1 will hold a summer opening celebration in Long Island City on June 22nd with a performance by Ecstatic Sunshine. Then they officially kick off the weekly Saturday ourdoor (urban farm-looking) parties on July 5th with Nublu Orchestra. From there we get some DFA, Kelley Polar, Apollo Heights, Matthew Dear and much much more....

my comments mostly consist of saying 'i like blank' but i'll do it again. I like Matthew Dear and those people from LCD Soundsystem.

It's pretty sad what's happened to this party in the last couple of years.

Yeah, dfa is fun, and the rong party and matthew dear/ryan elliot should be good. But just for comparison....look up the 2005 lineup.
lindstrom & prins thomas, juan atkins, dfa, gusgus, josh wink, stacey pullen, ben cook, monolake.....

i'm still not entirely sure why they decided to have indie rock bands all the time. Last year the best parts where during the last hour when the dj's came on. Otherwise the crowd (and I) seemed to be pretty indifferent.

I think NYC is finally improving for house/techno/minimal/etc. It's a shame PS1 is moving the other direction. I'm not trying to sound jaded - it's just disappointing.

i read somewhere that matthew dear did in fact get his hard drive back.

oh but as an aside, i have never heard Kelley Polar before....Metro Area is decent so that could be a good date

Posted by Rob | June 20, 2008 3:09 PM

CONTORT YOURSELF!! Friggin awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 3:35 PM

James Chance!!!

Posted by jp | June 20, 2008 3:40 PM

Kelly Polar is not good live... one bit. Unfortunately.

WTF has happened to this party??? I don't know if they lack funds, or are so far up their own asses, but I might not even go once this year and that would be just to see Spun to relive the bay area rave days. I'll take the lineup at The Yard on sundays over theirs without a second thought.

Come on people, get it together!!!

Environ and DFA look like summer fun!

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 4:03 PM

OMFG! Another crappy year! They need to get a competent person for the booking.

Posted by kmc | June 20, 2008 4:22 PM

"Environ and DFA look like summer fun!"

It's like their studio B parties of the past 6 months...just outdoors.

Whether or not they're fun, it's unimaginative programming. Remember a couple years ago when you couldn't take a piss wihout seeing Tim Sweeney? Same thing except it's Murph and Mahoney...

hex message [members of rings and excepter] will be playing with ecstatic sunshine sunday

Posted by Anonymous | June 20, 2008 6:21 PM

james chance and the contortions!?

Posted by klk | June 21, 2008 6:44 PM

Spun is the one who books the party.

Mungolian Jet Set could be cool.
And Jimi Tenor is a fine performer.

It sounds like this year's PS1 Warmups are going to be as boring as last years. Bands again? What was wrong with the Warmups before last year's? Tons of people came, danced and ranted about the parties so why has it been changed?

Oh yea it's about art. Well PS1 is also a business. It was doing well with the old lineups. Ya'll know the old cliche, if it aint broke don't fix it - lest you really break it. I know this opinion is in vain. Most of the shit that goes on in the "art" world is politics anyway. Public opinion amounts for little.

For what it's worth, I suggest a happy median or I may be one of the many guests that will stop going.

ps1 was so good back around 2001 2 3 .....

^^^Not to sound jaded but totally agreed. I took an out-of-town friend to P.S.1 yesterday to check out James Murphy and, while the artwork in the museum itself was a blast to check out, the party has now grown much to large, beer lines were a 1/2 hour minimum wait and the "artiness" of the crowd has dropped dramatically. Now Joe and Jane Meathead go there to "get their weekend party and tan on."

Posted by blackhat | July 27, 2008 9:04 AM

oh man, the lines are insufferable. the only silver lining to not having the patience to wait 45 minutes for a beer is that you don't have to worry about not having the patience to wait 30 minutes to piss.

Posted by Tito | July 27, 2008 10:38 AM

Not that I like spending an afternoon with Joe and Jane Meathead, but I also don't especially see how Quinn and Shosha Art Snob are any less annoying.
