How early do people line up for Summerstage if the gates open at 3? Is it a big ordeal?

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 2:29 PM

yeah Im going in at 1030 for a spot on the line, to get in.

when does VW go on? does anyone know?

P.S. huge thunderstorm warning for saturday in the afternoon, and summerstage cancels concerts if theres lightning

"How early do people line up for Summerstage if the gates open at 3?"

early.

Is it a big ordeal?

Depends on the band. I suspect Vampire Weekend will be a big ordeal.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 2:35 PM

since it's a sat., and the band has huge appeal amongst 18-21 years old, i would expect the line to be huge. if you show up by noon or one you should be fine.

the only time i remember an act this big playing a free summerstage show, was a couple of years ago when MIA played. for that show, if you showed up one hour before the doors you were fine.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 2:40 PM

I have a feeling getting into this one is going to be a real shit show

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 2:52 PM

I emailed a women from summerstage about it and since Vampire Weekend is last in the linup (goign on at 6 supposedly) there will be shenanigans to get in way early. Im getting their like even 11ish to guarentee myself a good spot

THEIRS RAIN TOO!
SUMMERSTAGE CANCELS THEIR SHOWS IF THEIRS LIGHTNING
anyone worried?
I am

"the only time i remember an act this big playing a free summerstage show, was a couple of years ago when MIA played. for that show, if you showed up one hour before the doors you were fine."

MIA was not as big then as Vampire Weekend is now. Also, lots of bands as big as MIA play free shows at Summerstage all the time. I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 3:29 PM

if you get there by 11, be prepared to sit there by yourself for about 2 hours 45 minutes...

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 3:35 PM

alright...then name one.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 3:36 PM

I'm really not prepared to wait around starting any earlier than 2pm. Will that put me out of the running?

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 4:06 PM

im prepared to go out to the finger-lakes for the weekend and forget vampires had anything to do with weekends.

Posted by broski | June 12, 2008 4:18 PM

god no vampire weekend is definitely going to be a BITCH to get into. people who don't even know who they or that there are free shows in central park know about that show and are going. and m.i.a. wasn't big at all when she played compared to these tools. vw is all over the place. they might as well get panic at the disco for fucks sake.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 4:25 PM

there was lightning last year for television and apples in stereo. they did not cancel it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 5:10 PM

television's bigger than mia and vw. and mia was pretty famous at that point.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 5:15 PM

"alright...then name one. "

Basement Jaxx

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 5:20 PM

Café Tacuba

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 5:27 PM

So, just to clear things up, what is a good time to get in line Saturday?

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 5:48 PM

"So, just to clear things up, what is a good time to get in line Saturday?"

The answer is that if you don't get there in time, you only have yourself to blame.

Posted by confucious | June 12, 2008 6:25 PM

"So, just to clear things up, what is a good time to get in line Saturday?"

The answer is, where were you last year when they played to a 3/4 empty East River Park Amphitheatre?

Posted by buddha | June 12, 2008 6:27 PM

Haha, so like 1:30 is okay?

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 6:54 PM

The line's already down to the Apple Store, Fifth Avenue. Or is that the line at the Apple Store for the iPhone 3G?

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 8:05 PM

Sonic Youth

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 9:06 PM

WHAT THE FUCK!
ITS GOING TO THUNDERSTORM IDIOTS

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 9:23 PM

Don't look at *me*.

Posted by Sam Champion (the weatherman, not the band) | June 12, 2008 9:38 PM

If I get there at noon, the day before is that too early???

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 10:28 PM

Check out video footage from the concert at http://www.yellow-island.blogspot.com/

Posted by trolle | June 13, 2008 12:25 AM

I know, I was there last year at East River, and there were maybe 300 people there? remember the dancing bum in front of the stage?

I think you guys are seriously overestimating the popularity of this band, Television last year, now that was big.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 9:46 AM

i just want to see bron ruffians for free, is that too much to ask? too hot for waiting in liiines. god.

Posted by Mandy | June 13, 2008 9:59 AM

Television was a breeze to get into last year. Same thing with Rod y Gab and Neko Case.... all of which are bigger acts than Vampire Weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 11:49 AM

And here is another reference. Nas played there 2 years ago and he was huge then. Bigger than M.I.A. Bigger than Vampire Weekend. If you got there at 1-1:30 you got in no problem. Vampire Weekend is not going to be crazy at all. The people saying that on here are just little idiots who have no clue about shows in this city or bands for that matter, That is why they are talking about going at 10:30 am to see Vampire Weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 11:53 AM

^^^ he's just trying to sabotage the VW show! You should really get there at like 9 or 10 am if you want to get in!

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:00 PM

Sonic Youth played summestage back in 93? and we got there just about when the opening band came on no prob, and by the time SY was on we were on the railing. there were no lines or anything back in those days. now everything must be micromanaged/"crowd controlled".

Sonic Youth in 93, think about it much bigger than VW in 2008

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:03 PM

vampire weekend played to like 10 kids at the barnard student center almost twelve months ago. odd.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:05 PM

but sonic youth's fanbase doesnt consist of college kids home from school, who have nothing else better to do than waste their saturday afternoon on line.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:13 PM

Paramore is playing Summerstage on 8/28.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:23 PM

um, i'm gonna blow all the guys in VW, so i am IN. even if i get there at 3pm attathed to one o their dicks

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:27 PM

That Nas Busta Rhymes show was a nightmare to get into. There was a near riot with a police on horseback charging the crowd while firing a warning shot into the air.

Sonic Youth (twice, once with Sun Ra), Stereolab (at their height of popularity), Bens Fold Five, NERD, Sparks, De la Sou, Curtis Mayfield, Diamanda Galas, Patti Smith reading, Tricky reading, Indigo Girls... I don't think Vampire Weekend really compare, sorry.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 12:56 PM

"but sonic youth's fanbase doesnt consist of college kids home from school, who have nothing else better to do than waste their saturday afternoon on line."

no offense, but i think you're sadly mistaken.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 1:01 PM

so if i go at 4... theres absolutely no chance?

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2008 3:36 PM

in line at 3 and didn't even flirt w/ the entrance. security came by at 4:10 and said no chance. i was at least 500 people from the entrance and there must've been 500-1k more behind me. that's a dumpster full of wet trendsetters at summerstage....

Posted by Tito | June 14, 2008 5:27 PM

curious if it was rained out- anyone know yet?

Posted by anonymous | June 14, 2008 6:08 PM

Sure could've used a Mansard Roof at Summerstage today....

Posted by Tito | June 14, 2008 6:48 PM

guess this turned out to be a Vampire wet Weekend.

Posted by I can do that too | June 14, 2008 6:54 PM

at 3:30 the line stretched all the way down to the wollman rink. Absolute insanity.

Curious if it actually happened.... anyone know?

"Sonic Youth played summestage back in 93?"

They played there after Murray Street too.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2008 7:51 PM

I just came back from Vampire Weekend - it was a shitshow indeed...we were in line for 2 hours, then they told us it was canceled, but we knew they were bullshitting to get the 1000+ people on line home, then after another hour they let the 200 or so wanderers who were still in line, in. 3 hours in the rain = pain in the ass. Hitting a girl from New Jersey with a soaking wet t-shirt for blocking our view with her umbrella while listening to "Blake's got a New Face" = priceless.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2008 8:51 PM

Awesome show! Got there at 2:30-3:00, waited in the sun until 3:45, and then waited in a light drizzle until about 3:55-4:00. Born Ruffians were introduced by the day's host, Andrew WK, and they were pretty great as usual. They played a short set, probably because in the middle of the thing it started to pour. The atmosphere was incredible, people were having so much fun dancing in the rain and it was way better than the Spoon show that took place last year in the rain.

As I said, the set was cut short, the bassist broke a string and it was really coming down and the staff made them stop. We waited around for about an hour, and DJ A-Trak did some awful DJ'ing before introducing Kid Sister, who was laughably bad and only redeeming for her comedy ("This is my shit! Not literally, though.") and the two quirky dancers she had with her. I had to leave at 6:30, which was why I was so impatient with her act, but in reality not many people were really digging it and the crowd seemed pretty tame for the most part.

Everybody was definitely here for Vampire Weekend, who were everything I expected them to be, fun and simple pop music. They played a song I hadn't heard before (that they had apparently played at their last NY stop in January) and did a fine Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, and the four or five songs I heard were pretty excellent. After I left it started to pour again, so I'm assuming the end of the show was pretty crazy.

Anyway, fun and memorable show, people were really having a good time in the rain. The bassist for Born Ruffians pretty much summed up the whole afternoon when he stepped up to the microphone in between songs and exclaimed, "smells like weed!"

Posted by Sam | June 14, 2008 8:59 PM

i was really excited when i showed up crazy early and then the line went to shit when doors opened. that was really fuckin great.
also, people who left because of rain are fun-haters.

Posted by C | June 15, 2008 12:37 PM

well... to be fair, it was pouring buckets out and the thunder and lightning was kinda scary.

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2008 2:40 PM

"The answer is, where were you last year when they played to a 3/4 empty East River Park Amphitheatre?"

Yeah what a bunch of posers these people are for not knowing who Vampire Weekend were before they had an album out! They should cry themselves to sleep for not being as much of an indie hipster as you are. I bet you were living in Williamsburg on your parents' dime before these losers knew what the L train was. You are so awesome!

Posted by shutyourfuckingpiehole | June 15, 2008 5:18 PM

.. showed up a few minutes before 4PM.

I karate chopped that disneyland line and ended up front center standing ahead of some kid that showed up at 11AM.

It's all about the strategy.

Damn fine show 10 feet from the stage.

Vampire Weekend blows bags of baby dicks. Music has a sad future if thats what is considered "big". I know for a fact that you have no fucking clue what youre talking about.
