Thalia & band
Thalia Zedek

Live Skull created abrasive no wave music not unlike their 1970s and 1980s contemporaries Sonic Youth, Swans, Rat At Rat R, The Chameleons, Mars, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks and Band Of Susans. Their music featured angular guitar parts interspersed with bleak, quieter passages, for a haunting overall effect. The lyrical subject matter was usually as pessimistic and harsh as the music itself. Live Skull never achieved mainstream recognition, but retain underground notoriety and share a family tree with other relatively noteworthy groups. [Wikipedia]
Thalia Zedek was in Live Skull from 1987 to 1990. That's when they broke up. Before Live Skull she was in Dangerous Birds and Uzi After Live Skull there was Come, and there have been various other projects since. The most recent one is a band she put together for an album called "Liars and Prayers" that came out on Thrill Jockey in April. Now she's on tour with this band, and you can catch her tonight (Friday the June 13th) at Union Pool with Major Stars. I wonder if she knew that Teenage Jesus & The Jerks were playing in town the same night when she booked the gig. If you miss tonight, there's also June 18th at Mercury Lounge. All dates below...

this chick is HORRIBLE. I saw her open for Dinosaur Jr. a couple years ago. Absolutely painful.

If it's a choice between seeing that beast of a woman or getting root canal... I think I'd choose the root canal.

come were horrible too...saw them open for pavement in 95...

you fucking idiot. thalia zedek is great.

also, nice touch of misogyny there... stupid fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 4:54 PM

what's wrong with a little misogyny every now and then?

and seriously... she is a total beast. Makes Beth Ditto look like a fucking supermodel.

That's funny, because I saw Come wipe the floor with Dinosaur Jr in 95.

come and the grifters were really great.

Beast is right. She looks like "Monster," starring Charlize Theron. The three guys sitting near her look threatened and the dude standing with chin in hand is waiting for the right moment to RUN!

she's got that i'm gonna KILL YOU look on her mug ...

Who gives a fuck what she lookes like. Listen to "1926" and see if you come back with this same petty, superficial nonsense. Go to perez hilton if you want to comment like a 10th grader. Stick to the music and why it works or doesn't. Bunch of fucking children.

"Live Skull created abrasive no wave music not unlike their 1980s contemporaries... Teenage Jesus & the Jerks..."

An earlier BV post said TJ & the J's broke up in 1979.

who fucking cares what she looks like. this isn't a beauty contest you ass, it's a music show. and "beauty" is in the fucking eye of the beholder you dolt. yeah, that charles ives, he sure was a looker. no matter that he was arguably the greatest american composer to date. anyway, you're an ass. go jump off the brooklyn bridge and allow us all one extra seat at that show.

could not have said it any better myself.

Yeah total idiots commenting about what she looks like are probably some of the transplanted bklyn children who know absolutely nothing about music. And cmon now, love BV but like most of you, he does not know about bands like Live Skull or Uzi or Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. He copies that info from somewhere else. Duh.

I take it that was directed at my comment. Well, no shit, Sherlock. [sarcasm]Thanks for answering my implied question.[/sarcasm]

Thalia Zedek is awesome, one of the best rock vocalists ever, female or otherwise. Come were one of the very best bands of the 90s. Sexist comment writers, go fuck yourselves with a rolled-up issue of People magazine.

"I personally chose each member of this band to ensure that no one on stage, or in the audience, would ever have fun at one of our shows."

"An earlier BV post said TJ & the J's broke up in 1979."

That is a good point. I updated the Wikipedia quote on this post which I rushed to get up before 5pm on Friday.

Thalia Zedek is amazing. The new record is the best thing she's done since Eleven Eleven. Sorry I missed the show last night---any reviews?

"I personally chose each member of this band to ensure that no one on stage, or in the audience, would ever have fun at one of our shows."

in music, as in life, "fun" is one good thing, but it's not the only good thing.

Saw the show last night at Union Pool and it was fantastic. She's a powerful performer, a total original and completely captivating on stage. I find the earlier comments about her looks so shallow as to be hilarious, but some people can only grasp the snarky (predictably, too many examples on this site's comments pages) since they lack any original thought or ability to deal with music on a more substantive level. Those people would've hated the show last night, Thalia is playing music that's too real for these chimpanzees to comprehend.

thanks for the review, pjx. was the setlist heavy on the new album? older stuff?

definitely going to the show at merc lounge.

is that amy millan in twenty years on the left?

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2008 10:59 AM

Thalia Zedek is a genius. She is one of the few truly original American musicians.
Dinosaur Jr. were boring squat.

Ah, Come were amazing. I still remember buy Near Life Experience (my first Zedek/Brokaw contact) and being blow away by the music. It is still -to this very day- my favourite.

I saw Chris play solo here in London a couple of years ago, to a semi-empty upstairs room at the Spitz. It was fucking brilliant. I wonder if Thalia will come play in London any time soon. Does anyone know where I could find out?
