Thao Nguyen

Nguyen is raspy and jarring where Lewis is sweet and graceful, and her energetic, slightly manic performance definitely left an impression on the crowd. Extra kudos go to Thao's backing band, The Get Down Stay Down, for replacing almost an entire percussion section with really enthusiastic clapping and the best use of mariachis I've seen since grade four music class. TWTGDSD played their first of three NYC shows last night (June 2, 2008). It was opening for Rilo Kiley at Terminal 5. They do it again tonight (June 3). Wednesday they play their own show at Mercury Lounge. More pictures below....

Her set was fantastic, despite the chatty crowd. SHe's awesome.

What an unwieldly name for a band. I say we refer to them as just Thao Nguyen, period.

Yeah people always confuse her with my band, Bao and the Sit Down Stand Up.

nice bao.

I think she dropped the Nguyen for the second album.

Slayed Barden's in London with only a drummer.

i'm amazed that nobody's mentioned yet in the comments for this post how damn attractive she is. i guess their needs to be a first for everything, so there ya go.

I though it was an interesting performance, and unique sounding guitar style - strumming with lead thrown in. But it quickly became annoying... (is that the only style she can do?) Was it just me? Was it just that it was Terminal 5? I also thought her voiced ripped-off Cat Power. But overall kind of alright.

By the way, re: Terminal 5 - it was my first show there, I was told best to go to the balconies, but people were already around the edges, and the sound is horrible there. Best to go to the floor where you can see and hear acceptably if you're in the front to middle. Overall, not a good venue though. Bowery Ballroom kicks its ass. And to all those people tapping me on the shoulder, saying excuse me, trying to push in front of me ... who do you think you are?
