Breeders @ Webster Hall

June 10, 1961 is the day identical twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal were born. June 10, 2008 is the day they played Webster Hall with their band The Breeders. - their first NYC show since arriving back on the scene and releasing a new album. Their next NYC show will be July 11th inside Other Music. Their next real NYC show will be a free one at McCarren Pool on July 13th - one day after their NJ show. They officially announced both of those NYC dates at the show last night.

As Webster Hall is known to be during heatwaves, it was hot in there. That didn't seem to stop anyone from having a good time though. The Breeders rocked, and the mixed-age crowed showed their enthusiasm from the beginning until the Happy-Birthday-sing-along end. More pictures, and the setlist, below....

kelly deal...i'd hit it

Posted by hipster poseur | June 11, 2008 10:08 AM

Best show of the year so far. Truly stunning.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:09 AM

those girls are so hot.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:11 AM

Oh, Deal sisters, how do I love thee? It may have been hot as hell in that place, but those ladies made me forget all about that! They seemed to be enjoying the show, especially during Happy Birthday, when Kim flipped the band and the crowd the middle finger and said, "thank you, you motherfuckers." Good times. I was going to stay away from the McCarren show, but after last night, I won't miss the Breeders again!

Posted by whatabook | June 11, 2008 10:21 AM

i got fuckin' pink eye at this show, but it was worth it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:22 AM

Eh big Deal

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:24 AM

The show was incredible. beginning to end. I was pretty surprised that they came right out the gates with Tipp City. As you can see the set left us fans satisfied. The heat was scary at first but totally forgot about that as the show started.

Posted by cheap shot | June 11, 2008 10:36 AM

Add Safari to that setlist before IRIS and it'll be correct.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:37 AM

that Beatles cover killed.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:39 AM

Great great show! Set list was all over the place, the band makes it look so easy.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:40 AM

That was just about an ideal setlist too. I could have taken another song or two from Title TK (Little Fury?), but Empty Glasses, Iris, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, New Year and Overglazed were all incredible and surprises to hear.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:41 AM

Also missing second encore:
Fortunately Gone

Posted by JC | June 11, 2008 10:41 AM

i am so sad i didnt go to this! but free show at McCarren is going to be amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:43 AM

these pics r all close ups, they sux. lulz.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 10:49 AM

that setlist is fucking killer.

Posted by butternuts | June 11, 2008 10:55 AM

Great show. Kim was a little sloppy, but no matter: the gals delivered again. Tipp City and The Beatles cover were my highlights.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:05 AM

didn't see this show, but they were killer at Bowery a few years back....

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:07 AM

what is "inside other music" where they are doing another show?

Posted by sef | June 11, 2008 11:09 AM

^^

They're doing an in-store at Other Music on 7/11.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:11 AM

Yup, add Safari and Fortunately Gone to the setlist. Two highlights of the show, especially Safari - what a monster of a song.

and yup, BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR. Perfect singing, perfect playing, and perfect sound. And they made all that goodness sound and seem so... natural and simple!

also, as a singer, Kim Deal is the master of delayed phrasing. Best since Sinatra.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:12 AM

The show was just super. Really great! But yeah, get Safari and Fortunately Gone into that setlist.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:14 AM

so annoyed I had to miss this. I'm thinking about driving to atlanta to see them or maybe witing till july for the mccarren pool show. Eather way I've gotta see Kim!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:15 AM

sinatra?

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:32 AM

Hell yes. Sinatra.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 11:44 AM

No token male in the band this time around?

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 12:25 PM

The hottest show I've ever been to in my life.

IN MY LIFE.

But like people keep saying, the Deals make it worth it. Tore the roof off the fuckin' place. Best of all, I got in free 'cause Kim put me on the guest list! So glad that there'll be 3 more chances (or is it 4? I thought there were 2 NJ dates next month) to see the Deals this summer. I want to propose marriage to Kim.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 12:28 PM

12:25:

The drummer is a dude but apparently not snap-worthy.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 12:33 PM

The bass player is also a dude.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 12:47 PM

Some of you people are really really stupid and foolish.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 12:48 PM

only thing that could top this would be a Sleater Kinney reunion, imagine that double bill? wow!

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 1:32 PM

I think that Sinatra comparison was classic BV hyperbolism. Way to go, guys. We also got a token "best show of the year" in there a few times. But disappointingly, only 1 use of the word "amazing."

Bonus points to the braggart at 12:28pm though.

If we turned this into the BrooklynVegan comments section drinking game, I'd be almost trashed from this post.

(If The Breeders played at Terminal 5 I'd have been dead hours ago.)

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 1:51 PM

i thought that "we're gonna rise" was a real highlight. what a beautiful song, and what a great version of it they did last night!

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 1:55 PM

To the bore at 1:51, if you were at the show last night, you'd know it WAS one of the best of the year.

But have another shot of cynicism, because it's such a fresh interesting stance to take, one that the city could really use more.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 2:10 PM

Well was it better than Dan Deacon at Market Hotel?

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 2:15 PM

It's always awesome when a band has a song named after your home city. "Tipp City" is my hometown. 10,000 people. 10 miles north of their hometown of Dayton, OH. They actually played the old US post office in Tipp City, OH as The Amps when I was in high school.

Awesome they're still around.

Posted by anthony | June 11, 2008 2:39 PM

I am the bore from 1:51pm. I WAS at the show last night. It WAS a great show. And the Breeders have been one of my favorite bands for 15 years strong. (They were my first concert in '94.)

I just think it's retarded to compare Kim Deal to Frank Sinatra.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 2:47 PM

well, you're still boring at 2:47, too.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 2:56 PM

i love sleater kinney but i love the breeders more, to see them on a bill together would suck because the breeders crowd is totally laid back and cool, while the last time i saw sleater kinney there were tons of annoying teenagers there. they just have two totally different vibes as far as bands and crowds go.

that being said. the show last night was awesome and worth the above face value price i paid for the ticket. great setlist and kelly looks especially great this tour!

can't wait for the mccarren pool show!!

Posted by mjc | June 11, 2008 2:58 PM

Kim could kick Sinatra's ass, and that's even if he had his bodyguards. DAAAAYTON!

anybody who still thinks the 90s weren't the best rock decade ever is kidding himself.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 3:26 PM

I may be cynical, but that doesn't mean I'm boring.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2008 3:30 PM

July 11th
1) the breeders at om
2) thurston moore reading
3) no age/abe vigoda at seaport

woohoo!

Posted by Hmmmm | June 11, 2008 5:09 PM

does anyone have any more info on the montana boys? They were a hot opener to get me riled up! I was totally jumpin' around like a lunatic! they almost kicked those breeders out of the water!

Posted by gerry | June 12, 2008 12:30 AM

gerry, it seems to me that YOU might have more info on the montana boys, since obviously you're either a band member or a friend of the band. try to be more subtle next time.

the breeders were sensational.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 1:03 AM

1. The Montana Boys suck.
2. I get the Sinatra thing.

Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2008 11:37 AM

What was that song Kelly sang that went "Why can't we get along" or something like that? Loved it. Want to hear it again. Help!

Posted by Dee | June 12, 2008 10:15 PM

Dee,
The song was "I Just Wanna Get Along". It's on the album Last Splash. I agree, the show was great and that version Kim did was perfect.
