These New Puritans failed to impress

These New Puritans @ GOOD Magazine Party, NYC, 6/7/08 (Extrawack)
These New Puritans

I didn't like These New Puritans before and seeing them Saturday night at Santos' Party House only solidified that feeling. Someone else who told me even less nice things about Sunday night's show at Music Hall, and, another of many anonymouses wrote, "not good. period. totally derivative and unengaging." What did you think?

They also played at Solar One while they were here (pictured above). More tour dates HERE (if you dare).

sounds like anonymous commenters on BV have this one right.

These new Puritans suck ass

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:18 PM

I think most people who don't like These New Puritans don't like them because they sound different and are afraid of anything that is different. Whether or not you their music is your cup of tea they are good at what they do. And most importantly they don't sound like every other band out there. I was at the Sunday night show and they were great!

Posted by BrittW617 | June 9, 2008 1:20 PM

DIFFERENT? They sound DIFFERENT? That is nonsense. Typical NME shite.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:34 PM

BrittW617 obviously doesn't listen to a lot of music if she thinks These New Puritans are "different"

either that or she's an NME staff writer

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:37 PM

"either that or she's an NME staff writer"

or a Domino employee, or paid by Domino to say nice things about this joke of a band.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:39 PM

" I was at the Sunday night show and they were great!"

You, me, and about 10 other people.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:40 PM

These kids need to get over themselves. Who the shit does a one-song encore?

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:53 PM

How were SVIIB?

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 1:54 PM

I thought Effie Briest was supposed to play.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 2:00 PM

I agree w./ BrittW617 and These New Puritains are completely different froma anything else out there. You hipster kids need to stop listening to whatever indies people tell you and start making decisions for yourselves. If you don't like them that's fine but you gotta give them credit for doing something different - and NME would NEVER write about them based on that alone. They have already sparked controversy on this board - that's enough to make a band great.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 2:02 PM

they're very mediocre. they sound like should be better, idk. they should try harder. i feel bad for like the foals who have been grouped in with the NME crowd beause there are good artists that NME latches onto, but then there are also a lot of bad ones.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 2:03 PM

there are alot more shite bands that Pitchfork and BV latches onto than NME.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 2:17 PM

in addition, they're so goddamn pretentious. i've winced through a few of their interviews.

Posted by douglas martin | June 9, 2008 2:24 PM

they sounded a lot like art brut.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 2:24 PM

I like them. They're not exactly poppy or catchy though, which means your average DCFC fan won't enjoy them.

Posted by Dave Park | June 9, 2008 2:28 PM

yes there definately are.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 2:37 PM

Very sorry to hear this. I had high hopes when I saw their first videos on youtube. Then again, after I saw their wannabe Klaxxons music video I was already begin to get wary. Ahh well, on to something else.

Posted by camille | June 9, 2008 2:39 PM

well i mentioned NME because they're NME's babies. We weren't discussing Pitchfork or Stereogum or anything else.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 3:04 PM

they were a little stiff...and yes the audience was sparse but they were good. they were a MILLION times better than the Black Kids which everyone seems to think are wonderful and personally i think are shite. so bad live. couldn't believe how bland they sounded before cut copy. whereas TNP sound like another NME band they also hit spaces of brilliance like jaime t or the streets. i think that they are young and will find their own sound as they go along- but for first time nyc shows/us shows/albums they did the best they could. which wasn't bad. at all. at least they delivered as good as they give on their album- which is the true test of a band experience...Live. i think everyone should give them another chance the next time they come through. takes time to build being explosive and exciting.

Posted by sher | June 9, 2008 3:32 PM

I was at all the shows and they were INCREDIBLE.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 3:42 PM

I thought they were rather good. Apache Beat was really awesome at the Santos show.

Posted by chris | June 9, 2008 3:54 PM

"I was at all the shows and they were INCREDIBLE."

If you were at all of them, obviously you are in the band.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 3:55 PM

Some of you assume this is an NME band or because they're from the UK, but I would say that this band has way more in common with PiL and Wire than Art Brut and Klaxons.

Kids today... you assume so much while knowing so very little. Just a bunch of knee-jerk soundbites/comparisons and superficially crap taste in music for the most part.

NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

Posted by Frank Drebbin | June 9, 2008 4:00 PM

Apparently Frank Drebbin is bitter w./ the current state of music. Not to mention narrow minded.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 4:06 PM

No, the current state of music is fine: it's the white noise of 10,000 uninformed opinions that sucks.

Posted by Frank Drebbin | June 9, 2008 4:14 PM

i like them a lot, but im not sure how they would be in concert.
theyre not on my favorite of all time bands, but i enjoy them when theyre present on my shuffle.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 5:19 PM

i dont understand.
people hear different things.
clearly why some like country and some deathmetal. why cant we just comprehend that what you may deem as horrid and boring, someone might actually enjoy?
is that so hard to accept?

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 5:20 PM

Apache Beat is one of the worst bands I've ever seen. Sorry. They Apache Blow.

Posted by trash talkin sandwich | June 9, 2008 5:28 PM

The band is playing Tuesday at Mercury Lounge as well, it's a Fader party.

Posted by packinpete | June 9, 2008 6:04 PM

RE: Frank, "this band has way more in common with PiL and Wire than Art Brut and Klaxons."

Okay, fine. So why wouldn't I just stay home and listen to "Second Edition" or "Pink Flag"? Or "Slates" or "Y", for that matter?

Show me a man who can convincingly argue that "Beat Pyramid" is equal to/greater than any of these four albums, and I'll show you the Resurrection.

Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 7:30 PM

re: Anonymous 7:30

If you criteria is that any new band or album must equal or best some of the finest albums of all-time to go out and see something, then you probably don't get out at all.

I hardly compared their output so far to either "Second Edition" or "Pink Flag" (though I'm more of a "Chairs Missing" gal myself), but simply that I find that to be their orientation more so than the aforementioned Art Brut, Klaxons, Bloc Party comparisons. They're young by all accounts and if they grow into the influences, then great. If they don't, there will one thousand other option in the remaining calendar year.

Posted by Frank Drebbin | June 9, 2008 7:54 PM

do we have to talk about it?
they just suck

call me a "hipster" I don't fucking care they blow and it doesn't matter what I look like

Posted by Anonymous | June 10, 2008 1:01 AM

ok, i haven't had the chance to see these new puritans live: the tyranny ofdistance and all that. however, 'Beat Pyramid' is my most-played album this year, and i can't really reconcile any of these negative views of the group with whati've been hearing (on my most played album this year). i know, i know, it comes down to taste and personal context, but speaking as a middle-aged man who did indeed purchase 'second edition' (actually, it was 'metal box'), 'y', '154' and many other "classics" when they came out in the first placethe kinda criticisms i'm reading here are oh-so-familiar: yep, pretty much EVERYBODY i came across with an opinion HATED these records with much the same passion and mostly the same arguments i read here. while i'm not gonna mount a defence of TNPs here (too subjective -- my most played album this year blah blah, its worth remembering that there are no definitive last words on anything. jeez, if one was to deliver judgement on the fall based on one LP and two gigs, who knows what skewed perspective we'd all have.

Posted by not me | June 10, 2008 2:49 AM

sorry but i reaaally don't think beat pyramid is going to be on anyone's modern classics list. no offense. well except yours.

Posted by Anonymous | June 10, 2008 10:45 AM

I dont see how they are any worse than the Fuck Buttons. much better than the hold steady.

Posted by Anonymous | June 10, 2008 11:01 AM

I was one of three people in the "crowd" for their Dublin Castle show in Nov. 2005. I thought they were pretty good - derivative yes, but good nonetheless. Their recorded stuff doesn't sound as good as their live stuff though. While I like their music, I think what annoys me about them is how pretentious or arty they try to be.

Posted by C | June 10, 2008 11:21 AM

I've never heard anything by this band but based off the amount of negative comments here I'm really curious to check them out tonight.

Posted by mp77 | June 10, 2008 11:57 AM

saw them last night in boston. i enjoyed the record, but it just wasn't a very good live show. also: their pretentiousness was off the charts. they need to learn how to connect with an audience.

Posted by will | June 10, 2008 1:36 PM

my problem with "These New Puritans" is just their lack of originality ~ they seem to be perfectly competent musicians...they just play watered-down Fall songs mixed with the homogenous british indie poppiness that is very "now". to my ears. i think for once Mark E. Smith can cry "plagarism!" and be absolutely right. i mean, they're named after a bloody Fall song...talk about making it obvious.

I challenge all of you; go out there and listen to a Fall song ~ just one! you can myspace them. The Fall.

now try telling me TNP sound "different".

Posted by srsly, ghengis khan | June 10, 2008 2:37 PM

to: Genghis Khan

...and Fleet Foxes sound like CSNY

...and Vampire Weekend sound like Paul Simon (ripping off the "Gumboots" compilation)

...and Shearwater sound like Talk Talk

...and The Ting Tings sound like Tony Basil

...and El Guincho sounds like Beck

You could play this game all day long about any new band... better The Fall than some other conspicuous influences, I say.

Posted by Anonymous | June 10, 2008 8:52 PM

i was at the williamsburg show on sunday. i do really like beat pyramid and i thought they sounded great, but they were so damn awkward to watch!! very strange. and i didn't see the girl smile even once, which was really annoying.
