Acoustic BBQ cancelled, Hold Steady @ McCarren Pool isn't

Thunderstorms

This is not longer happening today...

----ACOUSTIC-BBQ-WEATHER-UPDATE------> ---- BBQ CANCELLED ----- sorry, it will be rescheduled! Though the sun is out now, a quick look at the weather websites and the hour-by-hour forecasts and the radar shows there are hella storms coming our way this afternoon. Please feel free to go down the park on the island (or any park, anywhere!) and have your own picnic and strum some acoustic guitars, but the official acoustic bbq is going to be postponed. apologies!!!!! [Todd P]
The very first free Sunday Pool Party of the summer starts at 2pm at McCarren Park today. That is still happening (so far). The full lineup is The Loved Ones, J. Roddy & the Business, and The Hold Steady. I hope the rain doesn't end up being that bad.

2pm is probably when they start letting people in but if want to go you should get there early. the music wont start much after 2.

Awesome!!! Now I can go watch the Spain-Germany match without missing the BBQ.

P.S. Todd, please don't schedule it for July 4th weekend either!

unrelated but deacon didn't play last night. he landed in ny and his music playing devices somewhere else. they did say he's playing ps1 in the next week or two though.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 12:45 PM

next week, with so percussion

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 12:51 PM

Perhaps Todd P wants to watch the Germany/Spain match as well.

what time does daft punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 2:05 PM

Thunder is booming right now in Brooklyn...decided to bag going to The Hold Steady, call me a wuss but I'm still traumatized by the weather at the R.E.M. show a couple of weeks back!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 2:16 PM

i assume the bands wont be playing if there is lightning, correct?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 2:19 PM

The 2 bands opening suck ballz. Hold Steady goes on btw 5 and 5:30 so my suggestion is look outside at 5 and if its not raining then head to the park. Even on a beautiful day, this lineup would not fill the place to capacity

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 2:37 PM

^You're an ass.

The Loved Ones are great, and considering this is a free, I don't think it would be unlikely that The Hold Steady could fill most of the pool up on a nice day.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 2:43 PM

This is gonna be a weird summer for pool parties if it keeps thunderstorming every day...

Mommy Nature is a woman of loose morals.

Posted by Tito | June 29, 2008 4:56 PM

So Todd P is afraid people might get struck by lightning, but he has no qualms about shoehorning them into that firetrap Market Hotel?

Posted by Rumplestiltskin | June 29, 2008 5:00 PM

anybody there? somebody give me an update on your fancy iphone...

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 5:00 PM

no one died played in the pouring rain at Bonnaroo.

just saying.

Posted by grace6697 | June 29, 2008 5:25 PM

hey Rumplestiltskin, why don't you go child proof some electrical outlets or something. I hear people are riding bikes without helmets somewhere, you go get em

germany's goalie (lehman) looks like the singer from the national.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 5:53 PM

i hope the bbq actually gets rescheduled!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 6:40 PM

hold steady came on around 5:45, play until around 7ish.

weather cleared up for their great set

Posted by jkov | June 29, 2008 7:26 PM

Hold Steady actually played till 6:56 and 32 seconds. I would not call their set great by any means. I have seen them much better before. Somewhat uninspired probably cause of the dreary weather. A beautiful day and a much bigger turnout would have helped. Hopefully this is not a barometer of the rest of the summer's Macarren shows.

The opening bands were hilariously bad. The first was a bad Cheap Trick / Slade rip, the 2nd a bad Rick Springfield / Loverboy tribute. Both played absurdly long sets with loads of "Brooklyn let me hear ya!" chitchat between songs, oblivious to the sight of everyone leaving.

Thanks to them, the pool was about one-quarter full for the Hold Steady, despite the fact that it had already stopped raining. The Hold Steady were excellent.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 8:57 PM

Was busy taking pics, anyone have the set list?

thanks

Does anyone else think McCarren sounds worse than last year?

Both Death Cab and Hold Steady sounded dreadful. Don't remember it being that bad last year.

Posted by arm | June 29, 2008 9:14 PM

Insufficiently loud, but still a good show. I have no reference point for previous shows (first time finally going to the pool) but yeah, it seemed a bit unlouder than could be should be.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 9:45 PM

Hold Steady wouldn't sound good with the best sound in the world, those guys suck azz-pole.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 9:50 PM

They played a holy fuckload of the new album, and as one who tries to avoid iTunes and is thus waiting for its proper release the show was hard to get into.

I thought it was a big crowd considering the violent wetness that preceded their set by less than an hour.

Posted by Tito | June 29, 2008 11:06 PM

The sound was pretty bad.

I hope it rains every Sunday.

That would make it easy to get into all the shows.

i don't think todd p was worried about people getting hit by lightning, i think he was worried about it not being fun because of the rain. plus, market hotel isn't a death trap - there are two exits, one is a ~10' wide staircase, plus there are fire extinguishers and lighted fire exit signs

anyways, sucks that the bbq got cancelled - i wanted to see necking and fiasco acoustic! can't really imagine either one, so i was excited!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:38 AM

most of the music they played isn't even out yet. the crowd sucked, as always -- dominated by high school kids trying to mosh and frat kids trying to look cool. the hipsters were all smoking. the venue blew and should be turned back into a public pool. neither opening act should be making music. the stuff they played between sets was old and busted. the beers were too expensive. the security were dicks and took my water bottle. there were too many people taking photos during every single set. the weather was bad. jelly stole my email for the rsvp list they didn't even use. the dodgeball was lame. the slip 'n slide featured nobody attractive. williamsburg is so over.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 1:12 AM

I don't know, a bunch of people standing out in a big field surrounded by nothing but water, with no trees, holding guitars - I'd be concerned about the lightning

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 1:57 AM

yeah, it's possible that it would be an issue, but i feel like that's not the real reason it was cancelled. I just don't think it would be really fun at all for most people

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 2:58 AM

Just ride the lightning, motherfuckers!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 3:56 AM

there are some great new corporate sponsors this year.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 8:35 AM

they ended with a load of long slow new songs that didn't work live at all. The whole set list was strange, really, skipping a lot of the usual highlights (no "You Can Make Him Like You" or "Killer Parties") but most of the new songs were good ("Constructive Summer," "Joke About Jamaica," "Navy Sheets" etc) and the Separation Sunday songs still ruled. The crowd was small but fun and the rain made it even more fun.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 8:50 AM

ok guys just regarding the comment about no trees. in a thunderstorm, the last thing you want to do is to be under a tree.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 9:00 AM

anon 1:12AM- I REALLY hate you. I looked up "whiny bitch" in the dictionary- it said "BV commenter anon 1:12AM."

You don't know Todd P man... I know Todd P. I think that Todd P. didn't have Todd P.'s lucky shirt back from the laundry. Todd P. don't do no shows without that lucky shirt man. Todd P. thinks that the Market Hotel is real safe wit them 2 lighted fire exit signs. Todd P. checks the battery on them himself. Todd P. don't take no risks with Todd P.'s people.

Pool show was great. Whole day felt like a movie. Next week will be even better. Soul music + bikinis vs anything else this day? No brainer. Seeing hot girls in bikini tops at the pool parties will always win out over anything else.
