today in NYC
* FREE STUFF
* Sigur Ros @ Grand Ballroom
* The Muslims @ Mercury Lounge
* Jose Gonzalez @ The Stone Pony
* Martha Wainwright @ Barnes & Noble
* Ted Leo & the Pharmacists & Variety Shac @ Maxwell's
* Love is All, Versus & Crystal Stilts @ Bowery Ballroom
* Rickie Lee Jones & Erik Friedlander @ (le) poisson rouge

Did you go to (le) poisson rouge yet? Damon & Naomi played last night. How is it?

The above paparazzi picture of Thurston @ Starbucks happened on Friday. I wonder if he has a free-coffee-for-life card. Later that night he played Knitting Factory.

It rained on R.E.M. It rained on My Morning Jacket. It rained on Vampire Weekend. It rained on Death Cab For Cutie. It rained on Adam Green's parade. A member of Sigur Ros was in the hospital. Iron Maiden lost their sound.

Knitting Factory is coming to Brooklyn.

you get to a point in life where you can admit that Sonic Youth kinda sucks.

If you're a turd-breathing candy-hole, sure.

i went to le poission rouge last night. IMO, it is basically a much larger Joe's Pub. Seating is made up of a bunch of tables with chairs around them, expensive drinks (and bottle service???), and clearly an attempt to be a little more "upscale" and refined than most venues. Generally, not an incredibly comfortable place to see most shows, especially since you will regularly be asked by the servers if you want a drink, and will feel like a jerk if you at some point do not want a drink.

That being said, the sound was very good, the stage is up nice and high, and the staff were all very friendly. Granted, a show like last night's does not really test the limits of the system, and I don't know how other groups will sound, but I was quite happy with how things sounded last night. Plus, Masaki Batoh and Helena Espvall played "Way to Shelkar" by Ghost, which was fantastic.

Hey I just watched that Creaky Boards/Coldplay video -- that's way close for comfort. It would be worth it to get an attorney on that if you have evidence of when you wrote the song. Of course, maybe u2 should sue Coldplay too considering they've gone so far as to even use their producer.

Posted by greg | June 16, 2008 4:14 PM

puh-lease with that creaky boards video. get over yrselves.

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2008 4:24 PM

"All this might just look like a cheap publicity stunt by Creaky Boards were it not for what Chris Martin told MTV a few weeks back. The Coldplay singer songwriter told MTV: "We look at what other people are doing and try and steal all the good bits. We steal from so many different places that hopefully it becomes untraceable."

I concur. I have to hope and think i my heart that people who make comments like that are simply doing so for some ridiculous level of shock value. There's certainly nothing wrong with not liking a band. However, to take a look at the history of Sonic Youth, of where they came from, the scene in NYC at that time and what they've done over the years and what bands they've helped along the way and who they continue to do so today...AND THE MUSIC THEY MAKE...a comment like, "sonic youth sucks" is completely ignorant.
