Pete Doherty

Last month, Roman Abramovich shelled out £185,000 each for Mercury prizewinners Klaxons and sexy Brazilians CSS to perform at his daughter's birthday. In February, a Californian computer-games tycoon paid £15,000 for an exclusive set in Pete Doherty's own, blood-spattered home. Mind you, the latter may have been miffed to hear that, a few weeks earlier, Doherty had accepted £100 from a regular dad to play at his daughter's birthday party.

"Doherty is a perfect example of how the private-gig market is shifting," says Richard Davies, a former music-industry executive turned internet entrepreneur, whose latest venture aims to make private-party performances from pop stars available to the masses. "At one end of the scale, you have your Dolly Partons and Celine Dions. At the other, which is still in its infancy, are cooler, younger pop and indie acts, who are obviously a lot cheaper." I'd pay Doherty to not play my daughter's party.

I didnt realize that CSS can even demand that sort of money. i guess there still is money to be made in the music industry.

gg allin played my bar mitzvah.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 7:55 PM

that is an insane amount of money to make for playing a party

ESPECIALLY if you are the fucking Klaxons or CSS

wtf?!?!?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 8:18 PM

a reasonable portion of that money was probably to cover their transportation fees, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 8:26 PM

I wonder how much it would be to get Radiohead to play my 25th birthday......

or even better Dan Deacon lol
hahahhahaa

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 8:27 PM

klaxons and css aren't worth that kind of money, that guy overpaid obscenely

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 8:50 PM

probably paid to see lead singers of both bands f*ck. creep perv

Posted by freddy kruger | June 2, 2008 9:00 PM

8:27- are you seriously asserting that dan deacon is better than radiohead?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 9:04 PM

Dan Deacon - might actually play your party
Radiohead - will not ever play your party

Thus, if you have having a party and need a hip live act Dan Deacon > Radiohead.

Also, this thread wouldn't officially exist if Dan Deacon weren't involved, so thanks Anon 8:27!

Roman Abromovich was ranked #16 on Forbes Wealthiest people in the world, so for him this was probably pocket change.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 11:20 PM

CSS would have probably played that party for a 1000 bucks. Seriously. You could probably get any local band to play your party for around 500 bucks.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 11:34 PM

Daft Punk played my house.

Abromovich needs to concentrate more on getting Scolari to manage his team after he's done w/Portugal at Euro 2008.

"Why music stars are playing private parties"

Maybe money, it's only a wild guess....

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 9:09 AM

I would defo play a party for a few hundred thousand dollars. That's more than some bigger bands make on tours.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 9:51 AM

"Why music stars are playing private parties"

I'm sure this has been going on for a long time. The difference now is that it may be more lucrative and that it's being talked about.

Anyway, for my next party I'm going to have a gamelan orchestra and burlesque dancers.

"a reasonable portion of that money was probably to cover their transportation fees, etc."

and let's not forget like smack, hepatitis treatment, legal fees, fedoras, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 10:54 AM

you know the part i dont get, CSS played Studio B with capacity of what 300? at 10 per ticket the most they could possibly gross is $3000! shows you how stupid abramovich is.

the fucking guy deserved to lose the champions league too, for firing one of the best coaches around (jose maurino).

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 10:58 AM

how much do you think it would cost for Bigga Haitian to play a private party?

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 11:03 AM

Dan Deacon seems to play daily in NYC. I would not be surprised if he was in my shower right now being annoying.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 11:39 AM

True Dat, 10:58 AM!

Posted by treece | June 3, 2008 11:39 AM

I hate it when a band cancels a public show to play a private party. At least refund me the fees I paid Ticketbastard as well as the face value of the tickets, bitches.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2008 12:41 PM

10:58 hahahaha

while you are right that the rich guy overpaid, Studio B actually will sell upwards of 1000 tickets, despite their 300-400 legal capacity.

for a band like CSS, they will also pay over the amount the tickets bring in, because they want the notoriety and media attention that a CSS show would provide them. Also, CSS makes more in Britain / Europe than they do here, both because the currency is worth more there, and also because crap indie dance music is even more popular there than it is here.

They probably make about $8,0000-20,000 a show here, about $20,000-100,000 a show over there.
