Siren Schedule

I realize Malkmus and Broken Social Scene need to play last because they are the headliners, but it would be kind of cool if they instead scheduled it somehow so you could catch both of their entire sets. I guess then too many people would be all at one stage anyway (thx Matt).

so basically the Stillwell stage will be empty all day until Broken Social Scene goes on.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:23 PM

these are powers -> parts and labor -> dodos -> times new viking -> beach house -> helio sequence -> bss..

a great day - kudos on the scheduling.....i'm not gonna miss a thing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:26 PM

oh - except malkmus - but he's a boring jammy wanker nowdays live.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:27 PM

malk & bss are 2 of the best live shows I've seen in the past year... too bad they're not staggered. Jaguar Love!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:30 PM

Whattt?!?!? I'M SO EXCITED I ALMOST BROKE MY MAC BOOK AIR TYPING THIS!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:31 PM

they stagger the times but everyone knows siren is a mess every year and something will be delayed an hour which will delay everything and no matter what you will have to miss the entire set of someone you like. thank you siren for being technically shitty every year without fail. and it's a shame because they do get really good musicians to put up with their shit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:34 PM

Be lookin' good, Warriors. All the way back to Coney. Ya hear me, babies? Good. Re-e-al good. Adios.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:37 PM

i wonder what records Ted Leo is going to spin...

Posted by butternuts | July 10, 2008 3:37 PM

You know BSS loves Pavement. Scott Kannberg sat in last time around at Webster... maybe a BSS/Malkmus encore?

Posted by Ibi Dreams Of Pavement | July 10, 2008 3:46 PM

Wow, worst line up since the Siren Fest was conceived.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:46 PM

>Wow, worst line up since the Siren Fest was conceived.

huh? yeah, um, gosh, i'm really going to be missing jsbx. they sure killed it that first year.

you're a dumbass.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:50 PM

346, you have put pavement dreams in my head. Kannberg starts singing "Kennel District," Malkmus wanders onstage and plugs in, they go into "Half a Canyon"...

DAMN. now I gotta go.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:58 PM

Im gonna go jump in the ocean, play shoot the freak and eat some cheap hotdogs across the street from nathans, whos with me?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 3:58 PM

Not sure how Beach House will translate outdoors, but hopefully it will work. Psyched on Helio Sequence. What's wrong with catching a half-hour of Malkmus and then wandering over to catch BSS and picking up a beer on the way? Everyone needs to chill out.

Posted by Cam Diaz. | July 10, 2008 4:00 PM

looking forward to this - gonna be a fun day

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:02 PM

does it really end by 9? broken social scene playing for just an hour only?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:13 PM

good thing i already saw bss a few weeks back (it was a great show btw)

much easier for me to choose malkmus over them for this

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:17 PM

how long before the macbook air thing gets old?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:28 PM

what are the sightlines like for this fest? Is it possible to see without putting in hours before the set you want?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:31 PM

dodos>times new viking>ra ra riot> islands> a few minutes of helio sequence> start of malkmus set and end of bss is perfecto!

what a great free day of music

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:36 PM

4:31--You may be far back, but you can always see.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:40 PM

dragons of zynth huh?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:41 PM

what time do daft punk BREAK THEIR MACBOOK AIRs?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:48 PM

you think it will be crowded this year? I heard one year there was like 100k.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 4:54 PM

It would also be kinda nice if Islands and Helio Sequence weren't going to overlap. But hey, it's a free show.

I have this fantasy of Santogold surprise appearancing this she's in CP the next day...

Posted by Liz | July 10, 2008 4:56 PM

A question from a Siren first-timer: The earliest show I'm interested in catching is at 3. When would be the best time to arrive? All I know about it is that it gets crowded. Thanks!

Posted by siren n00b | July 10, 2008 5:01 PM

you can always see but the sound sucks every year without fail.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:02 PM

just get there at one, so you'll see someone you didn't anticipate seeing, who knows maybe you'll end up liking them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:11 PM

I have been there two of the past 3 years and never really had much of a problem seeing. You could probably get there 30 minutes before the band you want to see begins because the stages are set up pretty high. The sound is kind of a problem, but I am not going to complain since it is free. It is great watching the people who don't know what Siren is, but they are still digging the music. This lineup looks to be one of the best in the past few years. Kudos to Village Voice.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:22 PM

That main stage lineup is Ra Ra ridiculous. Screw all of ya, this is the best Siren lineup in a few years.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:22 PM

Gonna be chilling at Stillwell accept for the Dodos

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:25 PM

"just get there at one, so you'll see someone you didn't anticipate seeing, who knows maybe you'll end up liking them. "

In theory that is a good idea, in this case getting there at 1 means you might have to sit through Dragons of Zynth.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:26 PM

Ra Ra Riot is going to tear that shit up. Can't wait for their album

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:29 PM

Bitch, I, I- I've never begged-uh for anythang!

Posted by Riley Martin | July 10, 2008 5:31 PM

What time does Daft Punk break their MAC Airbook?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:35 PM

who the fuck are these bands? only one i know is malkamus.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 6:17 PM

Anybody know which incarnation of BSS we're getting?

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 6:49 PM

"how long before the macbook air thing gets old?"

YA SRSLY

You'd think people would be saying "I wanna cut his nuts off" instead.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 7:44 PM

I must be said:

Dragons of Zynth suck.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 7:52 PM

WHO ARE THESE BANDS??

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 8:11 PM

"WHO ARE THESE BANDS??"

oh mom

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 8:13 PM

beach house outside in the daytime playing the same festival matt&kim and the black lips played last year? people will fall asleep standing. bore and snore fest 08.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 8:15 PM

snore-core.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 8:20 PM

Worst lineup? I guess this is coming from people who want to "dance" or whatever and would prefer to have that clueless hack MIA back.

I was on BSS' side when they played Spirit If, because at least they billed it as "Presents" and people knew what they were getting into. Here, however, there has been no mention of Canning outside of what 7:05 posted. If Malkmus weren't such a jammy wanker nowadays I might consider seeing him instead, but I guess it'll be worth sitting through Annuals [biggest PR coup ever] and Canning's solo crap to hear the BSS "hits."

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 10:08 PM

Oh, and Matt and Kim better to see than Beach House? Get back to Omaha with your hipster bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 10:09 PM

aw i like the line-up. but i'm out of town maaaan

Posted by sarah | July 10, 2008 10:19 PM

Am I the only one psyched to see The Dodos? That's one of the best albums of the year, without a doubt.

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:22 AM

sound at siren is ALWAYS the worst. i've given up. if you're interested in hanging out w/ your friends in the sun and... i don't know... just having a nice day in coney island, fine. but if you're thinking of hearing or seeing ANYTHING of musical value at all, forget about it. last time i got so disgusted with the disregard that the organizers have for the actual music that i've decided not to go anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:37 AM

SORRY IT TOOK SOOOO LONG TO REPLY TO THIS...I BROKE MY MAC BOOK AIR EARLIER OUT OF SOOOOO MUCH EXCITEMENT

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 2:07 AM

For the people wondering what time to get there, I've gone the past few years, and the place doesn't start to get crowded really 'til 3 or 4 in the afternoon, so getting there around 2/230 would probably be best just to grab some beers/hot dogs and secure a nice spot.

If you're driving and interested in parking, there's a good lot in this mini-mall about a few blocks west, then a few blocks north of the stages. It's cheap too.

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 2:39 AM

BSS won't be bringing any of the women?

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 2:46 AM

Look, I love BSS as much as the next guy, but this 'fest lineup is pretty poor compared to prior incarnations:

2002: Sleater-Kinney, The Shins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, Liars, Pretty Girls Make Graves, etc.

2003: The Kills, !!!, Hot Hot Heat, Modest Mouse, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Idlewild

2004: The Ponys, The Fiery Furnaces, TV on the Radio, Blonde Redhead, Death Cab for Cutie, The Thermals, Mission of Burma, Electic Six, The Constantines, ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (***BEST YEAR***)

2005: The Dears, Ambulance LTD, Brendan Benson, Spoon, Nine Black Alps, Be Your Own Pet, VHS or Beta, Mates of State

2006: Celebration, Tapes n Tapes, The Stills, She Wants Revenge, The Scissors Sisters, Stars, Art Brut, The Cribs, Sereena Maneesh, etc. (***Arguably the worst year***)

2007: M.I.A., Noisettes, The Black Lips, We Are Scientists, Dr. Dog, The New York Dolls, White Rabbits, Matt and Kim, Voxtrot, Cursive

2008:

this year KILLS 2005 - 2007!

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 8:16 AM

bop our way back to coney

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 10:29 AM

it's mango ice rum cooley time!!!

Posted by i want my daddy's records | July 11, 2008 10:52 AM

I officially request that "i want my daddy's records" take up the humor slack that will be ominously present now that the late, great "Taco Time For Mom And Dad" has decided to retire. Do it for us daddy!

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 11:01 AM

you forgot 2007 had Elvis Perkins, arguably best act of the day.

But, 2002 looks like the best year ever. This year looks pretty good though, id rate it second best lineup ever

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 11:21 AM

Lest we forget the 2001 Siren Fest...

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Guided By Voices, Superchunk, Man or Astro-Man?, Quasi, Rainer Maria, Peaches, Enon

Posted by :jenn | July 11, 2008 3:43 PM

Hopefully Islands leaves their 'tudes at the border

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 4:16 PM

2001 was fun
before half of you fuckers moved into nyc

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 5:23 PM

Can't wait to see Film School... Hideout was one of the best albums from 2007.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:31 PM

I'm seeing BSS at Whistler the next day. That's a serious haul and they're on before 5pm. Better not be any encores at Coney Island or I could be stuck with an even weaker lineup on the mountain.

Posted by g | July 17, 2008 12:25 PM

parking suggestions?

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 9:32 AM

"If you're driving and interested in parking, there's a good lot in this mini-mall about a few blocks west, then a few blocks north of the stages. It's cheap too."

Anyone know exactly what street this is on?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2008 7:10 AM

you forgot man man in 2006, and they were fucking awesome.

and also don't count on any bss hits, when i saw kevin drew "presents" (though the ticket just said BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE in very large letters) he refused to play any "hits", only his own boring solo nonsense. he did make some bss related puns, though. thanks a lot buddy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2008 7:48 AM

i don't know when you saw them, but when i saw them at webster hall it clearly said "presents kevin drew" on the ticket. even so, people were standing outside the venue going OMG WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.. i have no sympathy. emily haines was there and they did about as many BSS songs as solo songs. for a huge event like this they *have* to do at least a couple.

"dodos>times new viking>ra ra riot> islands> a few minutes of helio sequence> start of malkmus set and end of bss is perfecto!"

as long as you're cool with standing behind a sea of thousands of people for those last three if you're switching that much. doesn't matter how early you leave.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2008 9:25 AM

Siren Fest line-ups listed by year = mirrored representation of the decline of great live bands in the last 8 years.

Posted by greg | July 20, 2008 10:40 AM

This year's poster illustration was the best, though, if that's any consolation: http://siren.villagevoice.com/siren/

anyone who hated on beach house is a jive fool. beautiful people who make beautiful music.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2008 3:08 PM

11:42, agree. I was wondering why they weren't selling it.
