YES LA

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 5:46 PM

aside from outer Brooklyn, New York kinda sucks comparative to LA lately

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 5:50 PM

> aside from outer Brooklyn, New York kinda sucks comparative to LA lately

As evidenced by the crappiness of Telepathe, and Abe Vigoda's lack thereof .

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 5:53 PM

I'm a New Yorker - I'd rather live in LA.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 5:55 PM

I have to say that these guys just really killed it at the Yard, and I'd like to see some photos of that show (of all the bands).

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:02 PM

Telepathe were awful - Vigoda not much better - even up close at the Mercury. Wtf is everyone so excited about?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:04 PM

awww they wear each other's shirts!

Posted by hi! | July 15, 2008 6:15 PM

LA definitely is less of a drag than new york right now.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:17 PM

New York has really been kinda great amazing last few years, but the problem is that bands get huge here really fast and then stop playing out regularly.

When L.A. gets a mass transit system as convenient as NYC's, then we'll talk. Otherwise, you people who would prefer to live there better start saving your pennies to buy a car and gas.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:34 PM

i certainly like most of those listed bands above more than No Age and Abe Vigoda

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:41 PM

"New York has really been kinda great amazing last few years, but the problem is that bands get huge here really fast and then stop playing out regularly."

This is true

long gone are the days when we could catch YYYs, TVOTR, Grizzly Bear and others at Todd P shows or Glasslands

I guess once they get big they only play shows in New York when touring

Luckily I think Dirty Projectors still have some Market Hotel spirits left in them

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:43 PM

not to mention with all these big corporate funded free-in-the-park stages poping up and competing for the big local bands to play, they're being asked to not play anything else within a month on either side of some big show where they're gettin paid $100k or some shit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 7:01 PM

LA
FTW!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 8:38 PM

no way can LA in the summer compare to NYC in the summer. i live in LA for school and spent a year there last summer and it was NOT the same as a summer in the city. new york music loving kids don't know how good you've got it until its gone. that being said i love The Smell scene. abe vigoda, health, mika miko, captain Ahab, the mae shi, anavan, no age, all really fucking good bands.

Abe V had some pretty stellar fuck ups at the seaport show but they pulled it together for the yard. and come on, they were so adorable when they messed and the seaport show, you couldn't actually hate them for it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 8:47 PM

can we put our LA NY feelings aside and just agree that telepathe are horrible

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 8:51 PM

yes. telepathe. i felt embarrassed for them. i felt like they wanted me to feel embarrassed for them. but really just the lead singer girl. the drummer and bassist were fine. the lead singer was Awkwardville, USA.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 8:53 PM

Abe Vigoda's live set kinda blended aside from a few fuck ups, but they're a pretty young band for starters, and they had a lot of energy. Their new record is really good, so I don't think it's fair to judge them just based on this one show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:16 PM

LA and New York both deserve a carpet bombing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:24 PM

can a person live in LA w/o a car?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:26 PM

'can a person live in LA w/o a car?'

no, you can't. unless you have really generous friends with cars. the buses do whatever the hell they want, trains stop at like 10 pm and basically the public transportation is useless. and even if you have a car it sucks because no matter where you go at what time it's dead-lock traffic. nyc drivers would start a massacre if enough of them were stuck driving in LA at once.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:35 PM

No, you can't really live in LA without a car. If you do, you'd in effect living in a much smaller city because of the spreadout-ness.

In LA you pretty much end up limiting yourself to one neighborhood if you're on public transport or bike. Distances and scary roads are just too much to feasibly travel from one are to another. Since the nightlife and the restaurants and the culture are in all different areas, you'd miss out on 90% of it carless - even if you lived in Silverlake or Koreatown which are like the LES/Wburg/Bushwick amalgam.

You might as well live in a smaller town that's cheaper and less fucked up than Los Angeles - because a small section of LA is all you'd get.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:42 PM

lol ny scene. you kids are fucking pussy. giving ny (notably my residents of bklyn) a bad name. come to coney island, marcy, sunset or sheepshead and ya'll would get fucked up. stay in williamsburg and park slope, that shit ain't brooklyn to us.

south brooklyn represent.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:48 PM

^ Agreed.

These kids couldn't walk a mile off in my Air Forces.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 9:49 PM

LA is not nearly as good as the hype might make you believe.

It's like 4 or 5 decent bands tops! And at the end of the day, you live in Los Angeles. LA sucks!

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:14 PM

new york's alright if you like art and jazz

Posted by l. ving | July 15, 2008 10:20 PM

new york's cool, if you're into going out and doing shit

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:26 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:13 PM

Abe Vigoda? That's a band name?

I wonder what kind of band Brian Denehey would be.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:20 PM

FEAR's biggest disappointment.........how wrong they were.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:21 PM

i betcha telepathe would rather the douches who keep complaining about them on this site hate them.....

Posted by charlie | July 15, 2008 11:25 PM

i dont really care for abe vigoda, but hey their out there doin what they like and all you stupid kids can do is gripe about it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:22 AM

I think they're by-and-large very well liked actually.

not a lot of shit talk about Abe Vigoda on this here thread, which is amazing given what website we're on

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:11 AM

I caught Abe V at Mercury Lounge. They fucking brought it. Unrelenting, joyous, ferocious set. And their drummer? fuck. Good for them. good for l.a., glad something good's coming out of that shit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:31 AM

I'm pretty amazed at the lack of hating going on here too...and happy! they are just adorable and make nice music

Posted by kate m | July 16, 2008 2:23 AM

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:21 AM

Jesus, how the hell is this band popular!?! They sucked the way too many times I saw them at the Smell (as they stuck themselves on every half way decent show) and they suck now. No Age, please take them back to LA and leave them there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:51 PM

12:51 is ANGRY!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:55 PM

Abe Vigoda makes me SO MAD!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 12:01 AM

Posted by Anonymous | November 4, 2008 12:53 AM

anyone know how to get rid of a watermark on a cd?

Posted by Anonymous | November 4, 2008 1:13 AM

you bklyn idiots. always stupid. the smell scene aint even LA. people who actually live in LA, and are actually into the art scene here, hate abe vigoda. those kids are pussies. idk what you kids think about telepathe, but that is some bullshit right there.

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2008 12:20 AM

translation:

12:20 is jealous of abe vigoda

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2008 12:28 AM

translation 12:28 is a dumbass. have you guys ever even heard abe vigoda live? ive probably seen them about 9-11 times, and they blow every time. i think they had 1 good show when they played with no age at the smell for the 2nd annual pancake thing. you guys are ridiculous. just because you guys havent heard the real talent here in LA, doesnt mean it doesnt exist. there is some heavy shit going down right now in the LA art community, this shit aint even part of it. this is all mainstream sell out bullcrap. get your heads out of your asses. 12:20 IS RIGHT. i also live in LA, i can vouch for that dood. he knows whats up.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2008 4:07 PM

^^^ couldnt have said it better myself. i mean, dont be so hard on abe. they suck terribly live, but i must say with all the help from the record company and all the effects the recorded shit aint too bad.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2008 2:21 AM

im from los angeles as well. these two or three ^^ are dope. abe v. the smell, they will come and go. will you all remember them? im afraid no one will. this is all "bullshit". right now los angeles does have an intense art scene emerging, i encourage everyone to come and see for themselves. exactly how the no wave scene was forming in '76.

Posted by Anonymous | November 14, 2008 3:18 AM

WOW. these guys are terrible. still better than any NY band tho. :/
