Bon Jovi in Central Park

Bon Jovi in Central Park

A sea of 60,000 fans eagerly greeted, cheered and sang along with superstar band Bon Jovi as the group hosted a free concert in New York's Central Park Saturday night that could be seen -- and heard -- several blocks away.

With the lights of the city's skyscrapers looming beyond the park, the New Jersey band rocked in the first free performance on the Great Lawn since the Dave Matthews Band graced the concert site five years ago. Bon Jovi gave ABC News exclusive backstage access before the show, to talk about what it meant to them to perform on the site that Simon and Garfunkel made famous with their 1981 performance there. [ABC News]

I doubt many people reading this could care less about Bon Jovi (except maybe from a nostalgic childhood point of view), but this was a huge event, so we figured we might as well take some pictures. More of what Ryan saw, below...

The show (July 12, 2008) started at 8pm and ended promptly at 10. It was a Bon Jovi concert. He/they played Bon Jovi songs. Ryan pointed out that though the show was free (for those who didn't pay scalpers), water was $5.00.

Don't worry if you missed out, you can catch them next year headlining Six Flags with an equal amount of NJ trash in attendance.

sometimes you tell the day from the bottle that you drink. sometimes when you're alone, when all you do is think.

no photos of tico?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:36 PM

Where are all the guidos? Have they not mastered the art of the internets yet?

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:37 PM

I just wish Bon Jovi and his fans would just go away. Very far away. It was bad enough when I graduated from college that they gave an honarary degree to Richie Sambora.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:38 PM

remind me what's the difference btw bon jovi-loving NJ trash and, oh, matt & kim-loving brooklyn trash? "it's all about having fun," isn't it?

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:39 PM

id like to reiterate that id never be caught dead at this crap, ryan went! it was only ryan i swear!

hey sock bath, the people in the audience look like regular people. it's not their fault you need men in yellow skinny jeans in order for the crowd to be worthy of your approval.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:42 PM

did they do "I'll Be There For You?"

I swear to god, I wish Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear would cut the crap and get back together. Everything's gone to hell since they split up.

lighten up haters and have some fun. looks like a lot of people did. (and that nj guido stereotype is so old.)

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:56 PM

wonder if the people laughing at bon jovi were the same people defending matt & kim's "fun" music...

i'm not defending bj, mind you... both him and m&k/etc. are garbage.

>>Don't worry if you missed out, you can catch them next year headlining Six Flags with an equal amount of NJ trash in attendance. <<

dumb statement
..say what you will about Bon Jovi but they're the one 80's hair metal bands that managed to keep their audience and pick up new fans while the OTHERS (Poison, Ratt, etc) play the amusement parks, state fairs, etc.
Probably because they always envisioned themselves to be a combination of Springsteen meets U2 meets arena rock meets top 40 or something.. watered down / cheesy versions of all those things but if it aint' broke don't fix it...

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 2:07 PM

guys, guys, it's ok. both the bon jovi fans and the matt & kim fans are trash.

I'll give someone $20 bucks if they can guess what Bon Jovi Tune this is from:

"wah-wah, wah-wah, wah-wah, wah-wah, wah-wah, wah-wah."

Ok go!

Poison and Ratt played Rocklahoma this weekend to like ten million people.

You'd think that there was only 1 guy in the band... and that Asian guy with the kiss me sign should be very embarrassed. In fact, his family just called... he's no invited to the family reunion this year..

I stopped listening to Bon Jovi after fifth grade, but if I had to choose one, I'd go see them before I see Matt & Kim.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 2:27 PM

I'm not a Bon Jovi fan and sure there's probably a question whether of not BV is the right forum for anything remotely BJ related...the answer is no but the pictures are great.

Tell me that every one of us wasn't secretly hoping for a riot when 250k people showed up with no tickets. But no...what's the world coming to? Every crowd seems to be so well behaved in these parts.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 2:29 PM

im going to go out on a limb and guess that Rocklahoma did not pull anywhere near ten million people.

bon jovi coverage? what is this, stereogum?

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 3:13 PM

i remember the first time i saw human beings take bon jovi seriously. it was my freshman year and as i turned the corner into my bedroom, i heard the hideous noises of said band. expecting some sort of ironic explanation, i then found three of my roommates, all from new jersey, rocking their heads to the music of the hair band-turned-middle aged wet dream. i left the room in horror with a little piece of me dead forever.

worth going just for "I'll Be There For You" and "Runaway".

worth leaving just for "Have a Nice Day" and "It's My Life".

Well, I am one of the "older" people who frequent this site and I gotta say that Bon Jovi were top notch in the 80's. Although what they do nowadays is hokey, it stood the test of time for some.

Just keep Bon Jovi and all this type of music off the site. It's obviously not cool enough for all the Williamsburg hipster douchebags.

Posted by Ron | July 14, 2008 3:36 PM

no, it's Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way"

wah WAH, wah, wah, wah WAY, wah wah, wah wah wah, WAH WAH

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 3:40 PM

thank goodness someone (1:39) brough matt and kim into this discussion. nail on the head. they both suck. and both are.. lots of fun.... if you know nothing about music and just want to dance and sing along mindlessly to something catchy with a beat, and dress like a complete idiot as a way to express your (complete lack of) originality, taste, etc. although, to be fair, most jovi fans have grown out of dressing so ridiculously, ie leather pants, but anyone who saw the matt and kim crowd at mccarren knows exactly what i mean.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 3:41 PM

2:16 you got it right. It is "Living on a Prayer". Send me your paypal and I'll send over $20 bucks.
And, I'll throw in another $20 if you can tell me what size HOSE Ritchie Blackmoore uses on his Heil Talk Box in this song! What size HOSE!

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 3:43 PM

"And, I'll throw in another $20 if you can tell me what size HOSE Ritchie Blackmoore uses on his Heil Talk Box in this song! What size HOSE!"

Sambora. Blackmore is "Rainbow" and "Deep Purple"

Posted by Ron | July 14, 2008 3:56 PM

"if you know nothing about music and just want to dance and sing along mindlessly to something catchy with a beat,"

So if you like Bon Jovi or Matt and Kim you know nothing about music? They may not be the most prolific musicians, but I'm sure there are some people that "know about music". I'd like to see any band you like write an American anthem everyone knows like "Livin' on a Prayer", as sugar coated as it is...

Bon Jovi makes me sick.So damn TONCH! The band and the man. Their music is such 80's crap. I mean they never made an album that was inventive-original-or non-nauseating. It really boggles my mind how people can like this music. Ohh wait their usually women from Jersey and guys that loved RATT. I'd rather dump in my shorts than watch this band. He's also a super sized tonchmaster prick to boot. Go away Bon Jovi and please never come back.

Just admit that you all sang along to "Livin' on a Prayer" at one point in time when you were younger. That is, before you all got bullied and vilified in middle/high school and had to opt for alternative taste.

i don't like their music, or anything about Jovi, but no one including myself could wipe their asses. Their megastars worshiped by millions. What have you done? Your just cowards that no one but your parents care about typing a keyboard.

always remember....

Bon Jovi = My Morning Jacket = Sesame Street = 40 year olds doing morning glory seeds = New Jersey Turnpike = salmonella = follow the drinking gourd = Nikki Sixx = "Cannonball" by Damien Rice = Cheez-Its: 2 for $5 = Adrian Brody portraying Morgan Freeman in a comedy about taking care of your pet ferrets.
