Brian Wilson refunding Hammerstein Ballroom ticket money, playing for FREE in Coney Island tonight
Brian Wilson @ Bluesfest in Canada - July 2008 (doraflood)

In response to several disgruntled fans, Brian Wilson and his wife and manager Melinda Wilson have decided to refund fans'tickets for his July 11th New York City concert at Hammerstein Ballroom.Fans complained that the show, which was a benefit for the Stand Up For A Cure cancer benefit, ran up to several hundred dollars but had poor visibility for some seats, and only contained a 75-minute performance by Wilson. Wilson performed with a scaled-back band, and his setlist lacked Beach Boys or solo rarities.
Melinda Wilson chatted with fans on brianwilson.com and said that Brian wanted to refund the money to fans who were unhappy by having them send their ticket stubs to their publicist for reimbursement.
Melinda said in her various messages: "Brian saw the posts and asked me to respond. He's really sensitive to all of your feelings and doesn't want to offending anyone. He wanted to make this offer to keep everyone cool (as he said)... With the exception of the charity show, most of these ticket prices are less than they have been in the past. On (July) 17th, the show (in Brooklyn, New York's Coney Island) is FREE please take advantage of that. Hope this clears the air for you. Thank you for being Brian's fan." [KBS Radio]

also, does anyone know if he goes on right at 7:30....or is there any kind of opening act?

Wow..considering that was a charity show that is interesting.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 1:55 PM
Those as are some asshole fans. It was for charity.

Brian gave in to the "whinos". He's probably so out of touch that he doesn't realize that people complain about anything and everything these days. He shouldn't have given shit back...

you dont need tickets, its just in a park

I recall some years ago that John Mellencamp felt that his performance at a concert here in NYC was subpar so he offered those who attended a refund but asked them to donate the money to Farm Aid.
"Those as are some asshole fans. It was for charity."
I disagree about them being assholes. One, it's not clear from what BV posted that those who complained demanded a refund. Two, so what if it was for charity? They're still entitled to expect their money's worth from the performance. I will say this: I'd be skeptical if anyone who attended and requests a refund claims that the performance was worth nothing. Anyone who receives a full refund should donate what they honestly feel the performance was worth to the charity.

What if he sucks in Coney Island tonight, too? Can I get a refund?
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 2:37 PM
knowing Brian Wilson's history... I'd say anyone who bought tickets can just hope for the best. You don't know what you're going to get... there certainly is no guarantee of an amazing show.

I was at the show and it was fantastic, if shorter than what I had hoped for. Any real Brian Wilson fan would know that it is a blessing that he is still performing after all that he's been through. Plus it was for cancer research. I'm broke, but I would never ask for a refund. I doubt many people would aside from a few assholes.

there used to be prostitutes all over asser levy park. and kids would get jumped at the boardwalk over there.
ah, 1994.

2:44...ask for a refund and then give the refund to the charity. or just request that the management do that when you send the ticket. more cancer research.
also, i am jumping all ya'll in levy park tonight just to remind you of the good ol' days. ah, 2008.

Wow, that money is coming out of his pocket. He did the show, he played what would normally be a full show by most standards since it clocked in at over an hour, and if his song selection was poor ...that's the breaks in the world of reunion/oldies act touring.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 3:37 PM
Actually the song selection was more of a greatest hits concert than the last couple of tours he has done. I caught the Smile show at Carnegie Hall and the show he did with Al Jardine at the Beacon and they were both great shows.
The show tonight has him performing with a smaller band and perhaps that is why he is not doing as much solo material.
I think where people had a right to bitch is that they spend serious money to see him at the Hammerstein which is a shitty venue without knowing about the free show which was announced afterwards. Without question, people would have passed on it to hit the Coney Island show.

it was a benefit show. why are people having trouble understanding this?
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 4:21 PM
Show starts at 7:30, What time does he really go on? Anyone know?

"it was a benefit show. why are people having trouble understanding this?"
common fallacy seen in the comments here all the time...
just becuase it's for charity doesn't mean it's OK to suck.

well, i'm betting you're going to lose karma points if you demand money back that's going toward cancer research... following a 75 minute set (which doesn't sound way off the norm) by a very legend that can barely walk across the stage on his own power.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 7:14 PM
i agree that one shouldn't whine a bout a short set when its for charity, but i don't recall ihe Hammerstein Ballroom listing saying it was a charity event.hoever, 75 minutes ia not a short set.
I love brian Wilson. he and the Beachboys gave me, and my bros and sisters so much joy-and still do.

"well, i'm betting you're going to lose karma points if you demand money back that's going toward cancer research..."
It appears the refunds are coming out of Brian Wilson's pocket, not the charity's.

tonights show was so feel good.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 11:20 PM
great show! i feel sorry for the people that dropped hundreds of dollars at hammerstein and complained that there were no beach boys songs. tonights show was like 80% beach boys songs.

did he do an encore, or was he done after good vibrations?
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 11:38 PM
the show tonight was excellent!!!! Perfect in every way!
Posted by Renee | July 18, 2008 12:16 AM
there were several songs after good vibrations. two encores i believe. i know barb ann and fun fun fun were in there
Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 12:24 AM
2 encores, yep. also played two cuts off "That Lucky Old Sun" - Goin' Home & Southern California. To see and hear him sing God Only Knows is undoubtedly worth my $5 (to say the least), everything else was a bonus.

the coney island show excellent, his band is top notch...
they pulled off a sublime heros and villians...

I was at the show last night in Coney Island and I thought it was brilliant. I would have loved to have heard more Pet Sounds/Smile era stuff but the early hits are really great songs too and I enjoyed hearing them.
I think the band he's got playing with him are real good - particularly the harmonies (which are of course so important for a Beach Boys/Wilson show.) I was amazed at how perfect the harmonies sounded.
I also quite enjoyed the cuts off his new album. I think I'm going to buy it.
