Brooklyn Bowl owners Charley Ryan & Peter Shapiro

...Set to open "before the end of the year, hopefully by the fall" says Shapiro, [Brooklyn Bowl] will be at 61 Wythe Ave. in Williamsburg, behind Brooklyn Brewery, and two blocks from The Gutter, in an 1880s ironworks foundry.......In addition to the 600-capacity music venue and the lanes, Shapiro said there will be a "major food component" -- one he wasn't at liberty to disclose just yet, but -- hint, hint -- it's a respected restaurant with one foot in Brooklyn already.
As for the music, Peter Shapiro wants to keep the vibe of Wetlands alive in the new space, but the music, booked by Mia Sladyk, who's worked with Bowery Presents, will be much more eclectic -- rock, electronic, singer/songwriter, jazz -- than the jam-band-heavy lineup at Wetlands. (Though Shapiro believes that was more perception than reality. He points out that Wetlands booked everyone from Pearl Jam to Oasis to Rage Against the Machine back in the day, and I myself remember seeing David Gray -- before he became so lame -- playing folk.)... Awesome. I'm still waiting for anything new to open in Williamsburg between Bedford and Grand stops that appeals to a broad base of people, however, not just 18-30 hipsters. One of the things that seriously sucks about NYC as compared, to, say, Berlin. Very, very little intermingling of age groups. Sorry, it's true.

Two words....Asbury Lanes

I know, go ahead and accuse me of being a snob, judging books by their covers, etc...
but tell me that photo of these dudes doesn't make you pretty skeptical of their taste in music.

Great news! Williamsburg definitely doesn't have enough venues.
Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:11 PM
Wetlands is responsible for a lot of awful 90's music that haunts us to this day.
Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:11 PM
ohh a 600 person space that's not 21+ sounds nice.
Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:16 PM
that's really cool and everything, but is santo's house strictly 21+?
Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:21 PM
anon 1:10...shut the fuck up.
when you were wanking it with hoobastank, shapiro booked hardcore, punk, jam, jazz, folk, rock...anything.

"one foot in Brooklyn already." makes me think it's a place that started in Manhattan or somewhere else.

Burgers and bowling in a music venue - one way to gently ease hipsters into middle age...

I really get the feeling that folks have too much time on their hands as all they want to do it bitch. A couple of things-in New Orleans there was a really cool place that we went to that had something similar and it was a great place to see a show.
Wetlands, despite what you might have thought about the music, was a fun venue with really cool people. I look forward to checking this place out when it opens.

I hope the "one foot in the door" in a reference to Two Boots. There needs to be a Two Boots in Williamsburg.

I've been to rock and bowl in New Orleans. It was pretty cool. Also, the wetlands was a great place. Lots of good memories from there.

I wish Pete Sapiro would just take his parents money and stay home instead of pouring into an endless string of money losing vanity projects.
What an entitled talentless spoiled douche.

In my memories, Wetlands = ska music. :)

Spoken for truth! An ATDI floor show months after they'd already played fucking palladiums while opening for RATM. My little brother still thanks me for bringing him to that one. Cuz that's what big brothers are for!!

“To sit at a show, cock your head back, watch a band and then leave, it’s been done,” Mr. Shapiro said. “But to come see a show, do some bowling, eat some French-bread pizza from Blue Ribbon — that hasn’t been done.”

just went in to see the almost ready to unveil...looks fabulous! oh and for all those hipster haters or hippie haters, or money bag ego project haters - really come on! Most of the folks hating on Williamsburg have just gotten here...the rest who did found the neighborhood 100s of years ago have gone back to their motherlands (oh I am so jealous) or have settled in between on the hipsters (i included) who started coming in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. We are all guests - be a little respectful and see if some old timer wants to bowl.
