"Corporate sponsorship called a 'compromise'"

Lollapalooza

The heavy hand of corporate sponsorship remains one of the more controversial aspects of the festival business. Even smaller festivals such as the recently completed Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park require corporate support for revenue and marketing, but the corporate presence is especially pronounced at Lollapalooza with prominent banners throughout Grant Park on festival weekend.

The possible repercussions of such sponsorship became evident last year when politically charged lyrics sung by Eddie Vedder during Pearl Jam's closing-night performance were censored during a Webcast by one of Lollapalooza's sponsors, AT&T. The company said the censorship was a "mistake" by a Webcast vendor, and apologized... [Chicago Tribune]

Advertising should only exist as a trade-off with the people who are forced to look at the ads.

For example, this site would probably not exist if not for the advertising revenue which keeps it alive (unless it went to a subscription model which would probably not work). As aa trade-ooff/micor business transaction, you agree to see some ads on the page in return for being able to view this site for free.

In the case of corporate sponsorship for a festival, it should be clear that ticket prices were lowered, or some benefit is received by festival attendees in return for seeing the billboards and banners. Any advertising where there is no benefit to the people who see the ads, should not exist.

why would this site not exist? plenty of people have blogs with zero advertising. I could be wrong but at one time BV had no advertising. So I think you're wrong.

Saw Daniel on Sunday night in Baltimore. They had a similar thing going with the local band Jason Dove and the Magic Whip. I guess they must have done the same with picking out songs and rehearsing at sound check.
