Deerhoof @ Prospect Park

WNYC, July 18, 2008 - In an interview with host David Garland, Greg Saunier of Deerhoof admitted that he has recently liberally taken ideas from Igor Stravinsky. What more perfect pairing than this Wordless Music Series concert of the forward-thinking indie rock band Deerhoof and a wild re-imagining of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring by the Metropolis Ensemble? The unlikely playbill was recorded live by WNYC at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, N.Y. [read more & LISTEN to the whole show @ NPR]

nice pics.

the orchestra was cool but too loud. you couldn't really say anything to friends without shouting.

deerhoof was great but too quiet. normal-volume talking was almost above the level of the band.

still fun and free, though.

great show.

I was blown away that night. The show was better by far than anything I saw the next day at Siren.

Okay, roll call:

Deerhoof:

Great or shite?

a) Hit it.
b) Quit it.

katsumi is cute as a button.

and deerhoof does have a sick drummer.

I wish I was on what some of the other commenters were on, as this show struck me as boring as hell.

Overall, this year's line-up has been lame-o.

Deerhoof was the best of the weekend, second best was Liars, and third best was, I don't know, one of the bands at Siren, Id say Malkmus, but sound quality issues by the stage messed up the show for me. Also, the fact that "Two Tickets to Paradise" got the biggest response from their set is telling, I think.

i saw Deerhoof in CT on Wednesday. They blew me away

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:02 AM

when was this?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:02 AM

I don't get Deerhoof at all. This show was the first time I've seen them, and maybe it wasn't the best place to get acquainted with their sound. It seemed pretty self indulgent.

@10:53: katsumi? satomi.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:14 AM

satomi is so damn small

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:19 AM

...so was Rudy!

i can't believe they came to danbury!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:24 AM

i heart these guys. can't wait to see them in an intimate indoor setting now

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:57 AM

greg's hair rocks.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 12:00 PM

yeah, it was funny that the orchestra was much louder than deerhoof!

Posted by sloper | July 22, 2008 12:06 PM

Deerhoof is the best band around right now... period.

I'd like to know what "self-indulgent" means when it comes to artists making music.

Posted by lori | July 22, 2008 12:17 PM

you mean they blew

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 1:00 PM

deerhoof was great as always.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 1:02 PM

i don't think their music translated well to a large outdoor space, i have to admit i was kind of bored.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 1:32 PM

They have a fair way to go before they rock out like ol' Igor.

Posted by J. X. Rodriguez | July 22, 2008 1:53 PM

drummer great. overacting cutesy pantomiming asian girl, getting old slowly.

Posted by annie momus | July 22, 2008 2:08 PM

If by slowly, you actually mean really fast. I agree.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 3:24 PM

i was bored by the audience. everyone just sat there. wtf? i guess i shouldn't expect anything less from the park slope crowd.

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:42 PM

deerhoof fucking sucks. they sounded like some shitty, self-indulgent jam band.

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2008 8:14 PM

Deerhoof would be an awesome band if they only got a real singer. Musically they are amazing, but I can't stand her "singing". Terrible.
