I realize that this is for children, but it's still cringe worthy.

I got 1-2-3-4- 4 1/2 for Feist.

I can't think of a more appropriate venue for this kind of pap.

super-fun. this is outside the realm of hipster-hate, and made me forget growing up over the last 24 years...for a second.
Posted by bungy underoos | July 15, 2008 2:42 PM
ok. i'll be the first to say it. i really miss feist in broken social scene. good for her, of course, but this stuff bores me to tears.

Can a female explain to me the appeal of Cat Power and Feist and St. Vincent? They are frail and frankly "girly" as opposed to feminal. Why isn't Marnie Stern on Sesame Street? She can hold her liquor.

..also I was waiting for "The Count" to make an appearance...

"Why isn't Marnie Stern on Sesame Street? She can hold her liquor."
Because it's goddamn Sesame Street?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 2:59 PM
I have to agree, this is great and made me feel like a kid again and drop my cynicism. It felt refreshing. By doing this, Feist is above any further hipster recrimination.
Posted by Mr Cynic | July 15, 2008 3:11 PM

Feist rules, fuck all you Dan Deacon worshiping, American Apparel wearing, gentrification committing hipster douchebag sheep.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 3:22 PM
feist rules? seriously?
Feist advertises iPods, among other upper middle class lifestyle products. I think the marketeers are pretty savvy about who they have shill for them. The woman is popular among yuppies. These are the people who live in luxury condos on the East River shore.
To claim her detractors are the gentrifiers is pretty comically off. Feist is the face of the new urban professionals. She and Sufjan oughta have a baby and buy the penthouse at "Edge: a riverfront community"

but that doesn't make her not suck and it doesn't make her not a hack

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:19 PM
As a casual fan, I can't understand where all the hate for this woman comes from. She makes pop music! It happens to appeal to others outside of your demographic - big deal! She writes her own songs, she seems to be able to play guitar a little bit. It's not like she's lip syncing at her shows. And if she wants to make a little bit of money selling ipods, that's her perogative. It's not like anybody buys records anymore.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:37 PM
Everybody's a critic. It's always fun to take a trip down to the uber-pessimistic-psycho-babbling-secretly-self-loathing-"the more adjectives and adverbs you use in your hate rant, the cooler it makes you"-world of the majority of you cyber blogging info sheep. Keep up the negativity, if it makes your world go round.
Oh, and have a chew on this one... I can confidently guarantee that upon review of 95% of the material you were subjected to at age 5 (assuming you don't still watch fraggle rock) under the critical eye used here to relieve your http blue balls, you would find it nothing short of absurd, silly, cringe worthy, whatever. The point is, a count that LOVES to count isn't exactly shouldn't be subject to some greasy, semi-balding, 27 year olds anonymous ranting from the safety of his computer chair.
Cheers.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:47 PM
The difference between horseface Feist and the luminescent Norah Jones is that Jones' bit was actually funny. Remember when you use to laugh at Sesame Street when you were young? Then too many dumb kids tried to fall down some stairs like that fucking baker and they started to excise all the funny, becoming calculated and precious in the process.
A shit in a tote-bag. That's what this dopey Feist song is.
Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | July 15, 2008 6:54 PM
nah dude, it's just that Feist SUCKS
the melodies are catchy only in that grating stuck-in-your-head kind of way and the vocal affectation is complete bullshit.
it's really calculated to sell records / concert tickets / ipods / whatever. completely phony persona and very contrived music.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 6:58 PM
nah dude, it's just that Feist SUCKS

So in other words, Feist sucks because she actually has vocal talent, unlike most of the hacks that are hyped on this blog but won't be remembered by anyone six months from now.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 7:16 PM
Everything a band does is "calculated to sell records / concert tickets / ipods / whatever." It's called starting a band to make a living so you don't have to get a crappy day job.
Welcome to the world of music my friend.
Posted by scott | July 15, 2008 7:33 PM
I have a good feeling there are lots of you here who only think bands with less than 1000 myspace friends are cool. God forbid anyone else like the music you do. IF the Reminder had not been such a big hit, most of the haters here would be praising this album.

7:33: you are completely wrong. 99% of all bands that exist, and have ever existed, make zero money and do it for the love.
Feist and similarly cynical marketed bullshit are the exception not the rule

Unfortunately, what you fail to mention is that 99% of broke bands can't play music very well...

It's funny to read all the stupid hipster comments that whine whenever someone makes money for their music and said music actually makes a connection with people that aren't wannabe artists living off a trust fund in Brooklyn.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:01 PM
Reed. There is a LOT of unappreciated talent out there. far more talent that is obscure and unknown than is heralded. You are foolish if you think the music "industry" is efficient or fair in any way at getting the cream to rise to the top.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:07 PM
everybody in Williamsburg has a trust fund! It's science fact!
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:09 PM
can we put some kind of import tariffs on Canadian indie pap?
Feist, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Crystal Castles, Death From Above 1979... all crap
I really like they've been unfairly unloading their garbage inventory onto our shores for the last few years.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:12 PM
can we get the World Trade Organization involved?
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:13 PM
Every single human being in North Brooklyn is a wannabe artist living off a trustfund - it's why the music scene is SO bad up there. Wannabe artist trustfunders have terrible taste in music. Seriously, they would never apprecaiet the subtle beauty and genius of Feist, or even Spoon.
We had a wannabe artist trustfund infestation out here in Astoria for awhile, but we sprayed and set up traps and bait and it's gone down a lot.
I hear there were problems in the Lower East Side and Park Slope for a while too, but thankfully every single human being living in those neighborhoods now is a successful, world-renowned artist living on a self-made salary, with a minimum of at least two Antony and the Johnsons albums in their iTunes.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:23 PM
Antony and the Johnsons is a genius you know! He played Carnegie Hall! With an orchestra!

vocal talent? are you kidding me? the woman whimpers through her songs. she's ingratiating and shrill
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 10:31 PM
10:31, though I agree that Feist has a super annoying vocal affectation, I think you meant to use a different word than "ingratiating".
Annoying, grating, tedious, phony, affected, these would all more appropriately describe Ms Feist's voice.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:00 PM
If you want ingratiating and shrill go jerk off on Joanna Newsom records.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:18 PM
I'm not all about labeling and genre's. I think they are pretty lame and controlling to be honest. But the problem these days is it's cool to not be great at what you do. If you make money, you don't fit into this category. If you can actually play an instrument well, you don't fit into this category. If more than 15 people dig your sound, you don't fit into this category. LISTEN people, you can stop trying to be yourself and just be yourself. It's OK to SHARE things with people that aren't as hip as you. Like stated earlier, if The Reminder wasn't a hit, most of you negative nancys would be drooling on this shit.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:26 PM
Oh, they loved Feist when she made Broken Social Scene good, but not when she got big doing her own thing.
Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2008 11:30 PM

it's all dull dull dull

they're both really annoying.

>>Feist advertises iPods, among other upper middle class lifestyle products.
???
since when is an Ipod a BMW ? freaking 8 year olds have them
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:07 AM
well off 8 year olds, yes.
the median income of people in the US is around $24,300 a year, before taxes.
The iPod she advertised was the Nano. It costs $150. If you account for taxes, that's between .75% and just under 1% of total yearly income for an average individual in the US. It's about 3 or 4 day's work.
That's a pretty pricey chunk of a lot of people's lives. It's a bourgeois, upper middle class item.
It would be intelligent of you to try not to forget the fact most of us here on this website and in the indie scene in general are pretty lucky and wealthy by national and especially international standards.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:39 AM
on to much more important topics, anyone know who designed her shirt?
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:45 AM
true that 10:39. I'd also add that New Yorkers make higher incomes than the rest of the country and have more dollar signs with which to buy pricey gadgets.
New Yorkers are also more Apple-centric than the rest of the country and less squeamish about displaying expensing little things on their person.
If you leave the city, you see a lot fewer of them. Outside of NYC, Ipods are a lot more of a badge of yuppiedom and the bourgeoisie in general.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:47 AM
It's her fucking song, she can do whatever she wants with it.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:12 AM
I never said a word about whether it's ok for her to sell her shitty tune to whoever she wants. What I said is that the fact the the marketeers for this particular product wanted her says something about who her target market is.
and her target market is boring early 30s urban professionals who like conspicuous consumption.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:21 AM
Its a device that plays music , she makes music that people might want to play on this device. Would it be better if she was selling Pepsi because everyone can afford Pepsi ?
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:28 AM
>> never said a word about whether it's ok for her to sell her shitty tune to whoever she wants. What I said is that the fact the the marketeers for this particular product wanted her says something about who her target market is.

>>Do you own an Ipod , yes or no ?
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:32 AM
It's absolutely ok for her to sell her crap song to anyone.
But who's buying says something. There's a reason she was chosen to be the spokesmodel for this particular product.
Feist makes safe music for dull people to listen to. She is not the coy, skittish character she portrays through her scared-little-girl vocals. It's an affectation, and she's a phony. She's meant to be Cat Power without all the weird. The music is middle of the road. All of this is calculated to draw customers of a certain moneyed demographic.
Do you dispute this?
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:38 AM
I totally own an iPod, and other expensive accoutrements, but I'll readily admit that I make more money than the average person and that I've had more advantages in life. Most of us here have.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:41 AM
WOW. 10:07... Sort of pathetic.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:25 PM
For all the comments aimed at the merit, or as some have pined, lack thereof in one Feist's reinvisioned
polemic known as 1234, I must hope to clarify that no one person here may speak for myself or any other person of said age. Furthermore, it is of the greatest importance that the sagacity of all inquiries into the alleged abominations of one Ms. Feist be put into the larger context of her obligations first as a citizen and second as an artist of notoriety. I cannot speak for all 5 year olds, but I for one find no fault in her dalliance with the rags of Sesame Street. Counting to four is a most noble enterprise and shame on the man who claims it not to be the case! Carry on Ms. Feist.
Posted by 5 YEAR OLD | July 16, 2008 1:55 PM

>> so what's your point ? what are you bitching about ?
Does the fact that you own an Ipod make you a
"boring early 30s urban professionals who like conspicuous consumption " ?
I understand what you are saying but I don't understand why any of this would upset you or have any negative impact to your daily life.. unless you just like to get on a soapbox...
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 4:40 PM
3:39pm. I'm a man in my his thirties who lives in Queens and hasn't seen a dime from my parents in 15 years. I grew up in relative poverty and my wealth, such that it is, is all self made.
don't be so presumptive that the people whose opinions you don't like are going to fit into the cliches that you want them to, it makes you look like a jackass.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 12:23 AM
4:40. you either didn't read the thread or are willfully ignoring parts of it so that my argument sounds weaker. The comment about Feist and her schlepping for Apple was in response to an earlier, very ridiculous post that accused the folks who were dissing Feist of being "gentrifiers".
The only reason the ipod ad subject was brought up at all was to show how insanely ironic such an accusation is. Feist is liked, largely, by yuppies.
This is not necessarily good or bad, but it certainly places her fanbase closer to the "gentrifier" label than her detractors are.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 12:28 AM
to anticipate your bullshit criticism of the explanation I just gave, the reason that the ipod ad is relevant to the argument is because it proves who Feist's target market is. The people who market ipods are savvy as to who they choose tho schill for their product, and their market is the urban upper middle class, the same as Feist's fans, and the very same folks who are gentrifying the city and pricing you out of your neighborhood.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 12:34 AM
12:23. Good for you on your journey of independence.
Posted by uberone | July 17, 2008 11:07 AM
OK so Im going to sum up this argument...
Feist sucks (and it pains me to type those words even as a quote)
Ipods suck
People who have Feist on their Ipods really suck
If you dont like things that are popular you are cool...
GROW UP.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 4:24 PM
LET ME SUM UP, ONLY BETTER, AND ACCURATELY:
Feist is garbage.
nothing wrong with iPod's, but they're expensive little gentry gadgets and who the company chooses to be their spokesmusician says something about that musician.
The problem with Feist is not that she is popular, but that she is mediocre pap. We're all for quality rising to the top and being rewarded with fame and riches, but Feist ain't quality.
THINGS THAT WERE NEVER SAID IN THIS THREAD, EXCEPT IN THE MISREPRESENTATIVE SLAM POST 4:24:
"ipods suck"
"If you don't like things that are popular you are cool"
SOMETHING THAT HAS BECOME OBVIOUS FROM READING THE RESPONSES ON THIS THREAD:
Feist fans are very defensive about being called out for their socio-economic status.
Feist sucks!

Wait, this last post was a joke right?

It's obvious 11:07 is mocking all the people who can't get off in conventional ways so they come here to explode with their hate rants. And it's also obvious he's not direct quoting anybody. This is a great argument. "You're garbage..." "No you're garbage..." Soooo progressive.
Rick never actually said "Play it again, Sam." But it still represents the picture pretty well.

There has been a lot more substantive said on this thread than "you're garbage" "no, your garbage."
why don't you actually read the posts, then get back to me

one man's hate rant is another man's interesting discussion.
5:19, do you think all debates are just negative energy burn off for people with sticks up their asses?
would lincoln / douglas fall into that category for you? what about the snopes monkey trial?
you're probably right, talking about things is just... dumb

lets talk about existentialism.

"substantive" is an adjective.

539 thats a good way to put a halt to things. just tell them they dont get it. it works all the time. and its easy!

People really need to stop lumping Cat Power and St. Vincent together with Feist.
Both C.P. and S.V. are miles ahead of Feist in every way. They deserve the national attention and success that the dull Feist has over the last year! It's as if the public of the last 3 decades all of a sudden decided to flock to mediocrity. How else do you explain the fame of Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews, Norah Jones and Feist?

OK...I love Sesame Street, but for some reason, I just can't bring myself to like Feist. I don't like her half-awake singing, her annoying bangs and that ponytail...how old are we?
I'm not a cynical person usually, but man, I just can't stand Feist, no matter how "cute" she tries to be.

Wait, did someone call Feist "Hepburn-esque"? Give me a break.
