Fleet Foxes @ Bowery Ballroom (July 08), NYC - pics
photos by Elizabeth Weinberg
"'fantastic' doesn't do tonight's show justice. This is the best new band on earth right now, bar none." [Anonymous reviewer 1]

"Fleet Foxes were very good, but boy is Robin Pecknold sick. He downed five or six bottles of water over the course of the 50-minute set, and it took four songs for him to warm up his voice. He sounded noticeably better from White Winter Hymnal on. He was also sick the last time they played, but this time around the band looked really beat, their set lacked the joyful stage banter of their last show. I don't know how he'll do tomorrow night, performing two sets in his condition, but I'm pulling for him.More pictures and the setlist from last night's show (July 9, 2008) below...A few other notes:
-J. Tillman is a really good percussionist (the songs have a more defined beat) and his vocals add a lot of depth to the songs. Mykonos is a near religious experience with him.
-I had a truly love-hate relationship with the crowd. While I admired their ability to cheer for (and lift the spirits of) an obviously ailing Pecknold, they were a little obnoxious. Clap after songs, don't clap for ten seconds just because your favorite song just started. Also, don't hoot, holler, or whistle in the middle of a song. I don't care if Robin just uttered your favorite lyric or if it's your "jam," bro, you're a cocksuck." [Anonymous reviewer 2]

Ragged Wood came before Your Protector.

the anonymous reviewer must have seen another show. FF were so awesome. rarely i saw a bowery ballroom crowd so into the artist. true, robin was sick. despite that, though, he sounded better than 99% of the indie street

Yeah, I guess I saw another show because I didn't think it was flawless. While they were great, the first few songs were rough since Pecknold was sick (his voice was noticeably more raspy until White Winter Hymnal). If you can't admit that, then feel free to add more fuel to the hype machine. I think the show wasn't as consistent as when they opened for Blitzen Trapper, but the highs (Your Protector, Oliver James, Mykonos, Blue Ridge Mountains, Tiger Mountain Peasant Song)of this set were incredible. My .02

Hey hey, came on here to see if the midnight show tmrw was announced. I'm really sorry for sounding sick tonight, it's been a long long haul the last few weeks and I feel really really super bad about not singing 100%. I even went to an emergency doctor today just to get some stuff that might help for this night's show and I waited around in a Duane Reade for an hour to get the prescription but I guess I took the pill too late. I will never smoke another cigarette as long as I live as well
I'm really sorry if you were let down :(
Also my hat looks stupid, I have a dumb haircut, and I need to lose some weight
Luff

last night's Bowery show was indeed amazing. Glad
I was there to see a band burgeoning to greatness. Albeit being sick peckfold's voice was still superb. Never saw such ravenous response from a NYC crowd. Fleet foxes are very deserving of their praise. And while everyone is touting of lazy tags of my morning jacket and band of horses, your laziness is leaving you out in the cold. But that's for the better, I'd rather you not be competing for future fleet foxes tickets...

Robin, I was just noting that your voice got a lot better as the set progressed. I don't think anyone was let down by your brave, inspiring performance. You were sick, but you gave 110% and that's all that counts. Shit happens, but you didn't let that hold you back. Bravo, seriously.
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 2:44 AM
robin you were fantastic tonight, sick or not. and i liked the hat, and i like your haircut, you are hot!
Posted by anonymo | July 10, 2008 2:47 AM
Robin killed the first 3 songs, not sure what people are talking about. also, that clearly isn't Robin who posted.
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 2:48 AM
hey anon 2:44, what the fuck do you mean "got better?" don't try to suck up now, man.
Posted by Robin Pecknold | July 10, 2008 2:49 AM
you people are a joke. that show was epic. his voice was epic. go listen to "a-punk".

wow. just wow. i kept thinking to myself early on in the show "man it's just gonna be downhill from here...he seems so sick. but it's still so good" and yet the entire set was absolutely incredible.
absolutely incredible.
now if only i were 21....what a shame. lol
and I think the missing song in the set list was He Doesn't Know Why.... i think?

Clearly you are a complete idiot cause that was Robin. Totally sounds like him. He posts on a number of message boards. He is a very very cool guy.

The missing song is He Doesn't Know Why. And like Anon 1:56 says, Ragged Wood comes before Your Protector. Pretty sure that's right...I was writing down the setlist onto my hand.

Not the first time he posted on this site either.

Robin sounded fucking amazing. I couldn't believe he played considering how sick he seemed to be.
Amazing man, amazing.

Bowery Ballroom sound system > Union Hall.....
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 9:02 AM
quoted for posterity/truth from anonymous in other thread:
fleet foxes are like an unintentional parody of all things "indie rock" - if they were singing spinal tap esque lyrics i'd at least be impressed that they know how contrived they themselves are.
fleet foxes are kind of like the first time i heard the shins. they both totally changed my life.

All day, my friend and I were on the fence about going to the show. He ended up going and I didn't. This was the phone call I received from him in the middle of their set, "Fleet Foxes are a fucking joke! Are they serious? I couldn't take it anymore, I had to leave..right when the dude was playing in the middle of the floor! It was too much."
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 9:20 AM
hah!
Posted by elizabeth weinberg | July 10, 2008 9:28 AM
Anyone who would make a phone call during the middle of a set is a dumbass. That's like the doofus you see at a baseball game who paid $400 for seats and all they are doing is talking on their phone. If you're texting during a show, even, you are soulless.
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 9:29 AM
The crowd where I was standing was miserable... not just talking, which I'm actually OK with to an extent, but shouting over the music to make snide comments about the opening band (who I dug) and FF.
And, really, being sick and performing every night--amazing. They shouldn't have to do that, but they did.

is this guy unaware that NY is very hot in the summer?
what is with the ski hat?

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific, the phone call was made when he was outside the Bowery, after he left the show. FF were still playing when he decided to leave.
...and please don't front like you've never looked at your phone during a set! Whether for a time check or a text, it's all the same shit. Soulless? Relax.

sometimes bands *are* hyped but also actually amazing.
doesn't make sense to penalize them for their talent, idiots.

listen to this and tell me that you can't see how it could be a perfect parody of everything trite in the "indie" world. beards? flannel? trite songs? yes yes yes!
all that they're missing is harry shearer. give him a long beard and he could be in fleet foxes.
look for the movie soon!
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 10:22 AM
anon 10:22- you're an idiot. and probably untalented. thus, you hate talented people who succeed.
or maybe you're just constipated. have some bran.
also, chill the fuck out.
Posted by grace6697 | July 10, 2008 10:31 AM
anyone catch D&D? they were pretty fucking good. except for the fact they said they'd play two more songs at the end and only played one. a good one though.
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 10:33 AM
yeah i hear their will be performance video on Last.fm soon too
Posted by daisy | July 10, 2008 10:42 AM
smelliest band ever.
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 11:02 AM
beards!
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 11:06 AM
i like these guys but I don't understand the rabid love for them.
Some of their songs are admittedly great, but others are just too derivative IMO.
There are even tracks I hear direct rip offs of other contemporary bands down to the riff.
Dunno--it's really nice, but what's with hyperbole?
and the ski hat?
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 11:10 AM
check out my great pics from last night's amazing show too! I had a spot right in front of the bassist!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 11:14 AM
this show rocked, he might have been sick, but it was still awesome. great sound, great venue, great band. a few smelly hipsters, but that's it.
Posted by roostertail | July 10, 2008 11:24 AM
I love when people use the word derivative with indie rock.
Posted by michaelways | July 10, 2008 11:25 AM
Great shot, Colin! What a night!!
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 11:27 AM
Not only was the band amazing, it was the most respectful NYC audience Ive ever witnessed. You could hear a pin drop....
Posted by dan | July 10, 2008 11:57 AM
play a all ages show, i can never see you guys
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 12:19 PM
trite? wow... FF is actually doing something that's really nice, and there are folks calling it trite? to each his own, I suppose.
Posted by the foonshoe in Norfolk, VA | July 10, 2008 12:22 PM
Expectations were high and these guys did not disappoint. Tickets were going on Craigslist for $100 during the day, which is crazy.
Robin sounded excellent despite his illness, and I think it was pretty amazing that he was so dedicated to giving the audience a fine show. If not for the hacking and water I wouldn’t have guessed he was suffering. Review here: www.lizandlaura.com

"play a all ages show, i can never see you guys"
...there was a group of what looked like 16 year-olds getting high for what must have been the first time or like it had just been legalized right up front. one of them appeared to even have a freak out episode over it right in the middle and disappeared himself.
it was funny... but made me feel sentimental, and kind of old.

One EW staffer's theory on who it was in their office stinking up a storm yesterday (overheard in an elevator full of EW staffers):
"I think it was the hipster kid."
Posted by Tito | July 10, 2008 2:08 PM
sure - it's nice. nice, derivative, shit.
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 2:10 PM
This is Bob.
I have nothing to do with Fleet Foxes.
I too am a bit chubby and have a bad hair cut.
Also, I am rather flatulent and have some sort of skin condition which causes my forehead to break out in boils. Anemia and club-foot are also issues. As is the hang nail on my right big toe.
I quit cigarettes and now take the new Nicorette suppository. Works wonders.
Mom .... Dad .... every lover I have ever had ...
sorry if I let you down.
Nader in 08.

Does anyone have any set time info for the 8pm Union Hall show tonight?
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 5:16 PM
The best band I've heard in years. Simply amazing.
Posted by e | July 10, 2008 10:30 PM
THE MOST MAJESTIC GOD-BAND I HAVE EVER HEARD IN THE LAST 16 HRS, EVER!
Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2008 11:11 PM
So one guy left early. Didn't have the patience for a 50 minute show and made his friend feel better that he stayed home to watch That 70's show reruns.
Not every band is for everyone. What a shock.
To the rest of us, FF is definitely sponge-worthy...
Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 12:09 PM
I didn't go to the show cause I didn't know who these guys were. Have been listening to the Sun Giant EP and the debut album... I like the EP better. I don't understand the hype around this band. Not for me I guess.
