free Pool Parties going national AND staying in Brooklyn
McCarren Pool - June 29, 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

Gothamist: Do you have spaces in mind for similar shows next year?Videos of the Hold Steady playing the Pool this past Sunday below....Sarah Hooper (JellyNYC): Yes we do, The Open Space Alliance, Parks Department and even Marty Markowitz's office has been very clear that there will be a space for concerts no matter what in Williamsburg. It looks more and more like that will become the Williamsburg waterfront, but I'm just hoping wherever it is that it's a little less hot than 50,000 square feet of concrete! It literally is at the point where we all look like we're at a waterpark all day from trying to stay cool--either a quick juant down the Slip 'n Slide,a bottle of water over the head, or finding whichever sponsor has provided a misting fan and sitting there until I'm soaked!
Any prospects for a space that you can talk about?
As well, since there is no McCarren next year, we have decided to take Pool Parties national....

Whatever the hell that means.

Why would anyone be upset if these go national or not? They're just free shows except inside a pool. Free shows happen everywhere. The pool thing might be the only unique niche, but it's not like an east coast version Coachella or something (and even that didn't turn into anything like the original.)

why is there no McCarren next year? are they shutting it down? putting in another condo?
Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2008 11:33 AM
"why is there no McCarren next year?"
They want to reopen the pool.
Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2008 11:39 AM
is this because the city landmarked McCarren and they're turning it back into a city pool next summer?
Posted by bill | July 1, 2008 11:42 AM
no its because santos party house canceled their fun license.
Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2008 11:52 AM
McCarren Pool was closed in the early 80s because of rampant violence, but fortunately that won't be a problem next year, because there is no such thing as crack.

The OSA did surveys to see what New Yorkers wanted to do with the space, the majority supported keeping it for concerts and films. So, of course, after looking at the results, the OSA are turning it back into a pool. OSA is dumb.

Some of you anons are assuming that there will be a swimming pool in McCarren by next summer. Think again.
You know the running track in McCarren, just south of the pool? About 5 years ago the city fenced it off and had it refurbished. It took one solid year. The contractors showed up at least once a week. It went something like 4-5 months over schedule. They did do a good job, once it was finally done. They refinished the running track, put astroturf on the playing field, and planted some new trees.
So, if it took a year to do that, just imagine how long it will take to convert that 1930's vintage pool into a functioning swimming pool and do construction to house the additional recreation facilities that are planned. Summer 2009? No way in hell. Considering their "track" record, my money is on summer 2011.

Grand Ferry Park remains closed.

good points 1:27. Markowtiz, OSA etc don't know what they're doing. This pool will be years of construction yet the neighborhood will never be able to sustain it and it'll just get shut down again for the same reasons.

"Some of you anons are assuming that there will be a swimming pool in McCarren by next summer."
Who? I don't see any posts saying the pool will be running next summer, they're just saying that the reason there won't be shows next year is becasue the city wants to reopen the space as a pool. That's got nothing to do with how long it will take to renovate the facility. It's not like they will have concerts going on during the remodeling.

anon 1:27 has a good point.
It took this city nearly a decade to level, repave, and basically renovate from end-to-end, Houston Street.
By that same token, Los Angeles County repaved their whole interstate freeway system (not the state highways) in under one year.

Again, that's "next year" and "next summer".
anon 139 has poor reading skills.

What's wrong with keeping the site as a mixed use large public art space? Does anyone really think the hipsters and/or the condo dwellers are going to take advantage of a public (ew!) pool?
Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2008 2:04 PM
Hey anon 1:51 - neither of those posts say it will be open next summer. "Turning" and "opening" aren't the same thing - "turning" in this case means "remodeling". And the other one's just a bad joke.

There is no way ground will even be broken on the renovation by next summer. The amount of red tape and payoffs they'll have to sort through will take years, and then the construction will take even longer. Mark my words.
