Sex Pistols @ Summercase, Barcelona - July 19, 2008 (lalitaporfavor)
Sex Pistols

John Lydon has responded to allegations of his involvement in a racist assault by saying his accuser is a liar and in need of the publicity. In a carefully worded statement, Lydon said: "I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening." In Lydon's version of events, the Sex Pistols singer claims that, "trouble was brought us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security". He added: "If they need publicity so badly this is the allegation universe they run into." [Guardian]
In related news, Bloc Party bassist Gordon Moakes will not be with the band when they arrive in North America next week. The reason: "in order to prepare for the imminent arrival of his first child."

"If they need publicity so badly this is the allegation universe they run into."

So well put.

The one fact remains: Lydon has always needed a good beatdown, whether he's a racist or not. Maybe the Danzig frontman would oblige?

human = garbage

>"...if they need publicity this badly..."

interesting to hear johnny lydon condemning someone for trying to generate publicity.

9:55 - Have you not seen the video of Glenn Danzig getting knocked out cold? If you did, you'd never have offered such a suggestion.

Now my feelings on the matter (reposted from my own blog):

1) There's nothing in either Okereke's or Lydon's statement that states that the Sex Pistol frontman uttered even one racist word or threw so much as a single punch.

2) "[B]lack attitude" is a pretty awkward term, unless this is some rather common racist skinhead speak that I, as a non-racist balding head, would be otherwise unaware of. Sounds an awful like like "bad attitude" though...

3) How do you get from "When are you getting P.I.L. back together?" to fisticuffs? There's something missing in the middle. Methinks what's missing is truth.

In response to the allegations, certain commenters here have been emphasizing Lydon's passion for reggae, which doesn't necessarily mean anything other than HE HAS GREAT TASTE IN MUSIC. Yet the only "evidence" of Lydon's potential bias is that he has some person or people around him that might be racist.

If we're going to indict this man on the company he keeps, then I hope to God that Okereke's comrades are all impeccable chaps with safe stances on fucking everything.

I agree with noyokono.

I hate the Sex Pistols and think their music is crap and the whole image is phony, etc but there was nothing in any of the news stories that indicated Lydon said anything racist and he should not be accussed of it based on what we have read. Whether people with him did or not is another story but Lydon himself seems innocent here.

As far going from the PIL question to fisticuffs, he would not be the first singer who gets all emotional when a previous band is mentioned. Ironically, Glen Danzig gets extremely upset and angry when his former band, the Misfits are mentioned to him.

Regardless, the Sex Pistols are the worst band ever.

The Sex Pistols were the greatest band ever.

Karen O got extremely pissed when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were mentioned yesterday at the show, Im surprised no one commented about that in the other thread...

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:07 AM

Karen O's problem is her Korean Attitude.

"9:55 - Have you not seen the video of Glenn Danzig getting knocked out cold? If you did, you'd never have offered such a suggestion."

On the contrary - that's the point. Danzig, even getting knocked the f*&% out, would still, no doubt, beat Lydon (deservedly so) into a bloody pulp. My guess is that I could take Lydon too once I had my Wheaties.

Didnt Lydon almost get into an altercation with Gregg Allman once backstage at either Leno or Letterman? I think the Allman Brothers were the musical guests and Lydon was a guest for some reason and he talked about how the Pistols rebelled against bands such as the Allman Brothers (in not so nice a way) and Allman got offended and had to be separated.

how about not asking john lydon about anything? how about that?

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 9:41 PM

Okay, yeah, John Lydon's a prick, but, after reading his book, countless interviews over the years, his involvement in reggae, dub, etc., I really, really doubt that he had a "problem" with Okereke's "black attitude". Don't get me wrong; John Lydon's an ass, but, really, I just find this hard to believe.

Not only that, isn't this the second or third time Okereke has gone to the press about some altercation with another rocker or another?

anon 11:20. well played sir.

No. The Clash were the greatest band ever.
The Pistols were a bunch of talentless drunken losers.
except for Steve Jones, he's the only one with a bit of class.
