John Lydon

Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke claims he was left with severe facial bruising and a split lip following what he alleges was a racist attack by Sex Pistols singer John Lydon [aka Johnny Rotten]. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Summercase festival in Barcelona while the bands were socialising backstage.

In an official statement released by Okereke, who is of Nigerian descent, the singer says he approached Lydon and asked him about the possibility of a reunion for Public Image Ltd, the band Lydon formed following the Sex Pistols demise in 1978. In Okereke's words, Lydon became "intimidating and aggressive while his entourage responded with a racist tirade, including the statement, 'your problem is your black attitude'." An assault allegedly ensued in which three people attacked Okereke.

Several other bands witnessed the incident, with members of the band Foals and Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson intervening on the Bloc Party singer's behalf. Both have confirmed to the Guardian that the incident occurred but could not confirm or deny reports that the assault was racially motivated. Following his involvement, Foals singer Yannis Philippakis was arrested. He is expected to make a statement shortly.... [The Guardian] (thx J M)

Lydon needs a good beatdown. Somebody call Henry Rollins.

weird story. isn't that a hate crime? why did they arrest the fellow from foals?

oh dear god yes. now that's a ticket i would pay for. better yet, let's have it at the pool...for free on a sunday!

what an ass!

but really, why is the guy from Bloc Party so surprised that his "hero" is actually a bigot? haven't the Sex Pistols been linked to bigotry since their inception? they're a bunch of Nazis.

Henry Rollins hahahahaha

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 11:49 AM

This story sounds like bullshit.

John Lydon's career is the antithesis of bigotry.

In all fairness, he's practically individually responsible for the infusion of reggae into punk.

I don't see this as being believable.

Posted by Bullshit | July 21, 2008 11:55 AM

punk rock has been linked to hate crimes/racism/fascist behavior since its inception.

in general, not a surprise. the people in these bands are typically ignorant and not very intelligent. it doesn't take much creative brilliance to write 1,000 songs that sound exactly the same (Ramones).

(This comment excludes The Clash and other bands like Wire: they were brilliant song writers and not racist pieces of shit).

I love that Rolling Stone ranked Johnny Ramone #16 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". David Gilmour was ranked # 82.

Bottom line: Punk Rock and the culture surrounding it is pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:00 PM

To the person above. You obviously know nothing about Punk Rock and music for that matter. You've obviously just gotten interested into music and are unaware of many things.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:04 PM

Yeah punk is so intrinsically racist. That's why it had connections with reggae and also with hip hop early on in NYC.

From the sound of the article, the racist charges are being made about Lydon's people, not he himself?

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:06 PM

"Lydon needs a good beatdown. Somebody call Henry Rollins."

fuck that...call SONNY rollins!

...I really want to see that fight and Sonny would own Lydon in like two seconds....

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:08 PM

I would also like to repeat some of the people above - John Lydon is an intelligent person, and I think he's worked with Rock Against Racism / Love Music Hate Racism in the past.

To say he's a Nazi is ridiculous. To say that punk is linked to hate, racism, and fascism is a complete lack of understanding of its history.

i predict 2 billion comments in this thread

Lydon is just a grumpy old man who reforms the sex pistols every 5 years for a paycheck. What a sell-out. I hope that guy from FOALS got in a few good shots.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:17 PM

Lydon is a parody of the cliche he once represented.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:20 PM

Oh, yes, this must be a racial thing. Because Kele isn't a pretentious, smart-ass, preachy twat. And Lydon, isn't a bipolar, press-starved washed battle of the bands judge, so why would he hang out with idiots? And, besides, there's never any conflict backstage at music festivals, where all the bands unite in harmony and there's no griping about money or who gets top billing or the food or who talked which girl. It's always enlightened, and peaceful backstage, which is why we look to musicians and their handlers to lead...

To anonymous 12:04PM:

Growing up, Lydon wore a t-shirt that read, "I Hate Pink Floyd". Interesting.

I'm not new to music, rather, I prefer listening to albums like, "Bitches Brew" or "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" to "Rocket To Russia". I'd rather listen to music written by epic minds than cross-dressing clowns (New York Dolls).

Hey, some would rather eat a Big Mac than a steak from Peter Luger. To each their own, right?

i can just see their smug face glowing as they typed that and hit 'submit'

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:11 PM

just because Lydon had an interest in reggae doesn't mean he couldn't become (or have been all along) racist. that's like saying anti-white racists are really not racist b/c they speak english, a language which was initially developed among white people. or mel gibson can't be anti-semitic b/c he happens to like borscht and mazo balls.

similarly, Bobbly Gillespie, of Primal Scream, claims to be a proponent of world peace, blah blah blah, but then he acts like a racist piece of shit at Glastonbury in '05.

many of these bands are just confused, pretentious left-wing hypocrites and will do whatever it takes to take on some political cause just for the sake of it. they really should just stick to their fucking music and keep the rest of their thoughts to themselves and their social circles (including bono and thom yorke.)

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:11 PM

lots of bigots are intelligent, in some way or another. i'm sure hitler and hugo chavez could be considered intelligent in many ways. and there are many non-bigots who happen to not be intelligent. and there are many bigots who happen to not be intelligent. what does "intelligence" have to do with bigotry?

It's kind of a stretch to assert that Hugo Chavez could be considered intelligent...

fuckin' attention-whores. i'm so sick of these bands playing at these "anti-racism" concerts or whatever. they're all so full of shit, and full of themselves.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:24 PM

This man is clearly a racist! He even called his autobigraphy: No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish! That kinda says it all, right? I mean, I'm a cat person myself, but I would NEVER exclude canines from reading my autobiography. THAT'S JUST WRONG! Shame on you Mr. Rotten! SHAME!

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:33 PM

look at the photo at the top of the page: kind of says it all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:37 PM

I want to hear the REAL story, because this account sounds like bullshit. How does a conversation go from "when is PiL going to reunite?" to "Your problem is your black attitude"? Even if Lydon did say that (which I doubt) a serious chunk of the conversation is missing. If Lydon and his "crew" did collectively beat up kele, then why was the guy in the Foals the only one arrested? Sounds fishy. Anyways, Kele probably asked Lydon to listen to the latest Bloc Party single, which causes any sane human being to want to beat him up.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:38 PM

The Sex Pistols are the worst band ever.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:38 PM

Lydon says:

"We are in the middle of a wonderful tour, after 30 years we are achieving a true unity in our audience. They are multi varied, all ages, all races, creeds and colours. When you are at a festival with bands who are jealous fools, lies and confusion usually follow. If they need publicity so badly this is the allegation universe they run into."

"I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening. After the show John Rotten and management remained behind to sign autographs, which we did for 4 solid hours without incident and had a great time talking to other Spanish bands, this seems to have sparked jealousy in certain bands."

But he went on to admit that there had been an incident: "The trouble was brought to us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security."

"Grow up and learn to be a true man."

"When you have achieved as much as I have, come back and talk to me.

"Its a shame that the wonderful world of the media is riddled with nonsense like this"

John Lydon denies 'racist' Bloc Party attack

The Sex Pistols singer blames Kele Okereke for causing the fight, telling him to 'grow up and be a true man'

Rosie Swash

guardian.co.uk

John Lydon has responded to allegations of his involvement in a racist assault by saying his accuser is a liar and in need of the publicity. In a carefully worded statement, Lydon said: "I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening." In Lydon's version of events, the Sex Pistols singer claims that, "trouble was brought us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security". He added: "If they need publicity so badly this is the allegation universe they run into."

Referring to his alter-ego in the third person, Lydon says: "After the show John Rotten and management remained behind to sign autographs, which we did for four solid hours without incident and had a great time talking to other Spanish bands, this seems to have sparked jealousy in certain bands."
His only reference to accusations that Kele Okereke was the victim of a racially motivated assault is to say: "We are in the middle of a wonderful tour, after 30 years we are achieving a true unity in our audience. They are multi-varied, all ages, all races, creeds and colours. When you are at a festival with bands who are jealous fools, lies and confusion usually follow."

Later, he apparently directs a comment to Okereke: "Grow up and learn to be a true man", before adding "It's a shame that the wonderful world of the media is riddled with nonsense like this".

The Bloc Party singer could not be contacted for a response.

What a classy situation.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 1:49 PM

I met Lydon once at Studio 54 (for a Bow Wow Wow concert) and he was with David Hinds, the lead singer of Steel Pulse. I was like 15 or something and they both seemed like nice enough guys. Certainly, no one had informed Hinds that Lydon was a racist. Or Don Letts, for that matter.

Although.. come to think of it, Lydon *DID* name his autobiography "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs", so it should be obvious to everyone that he hates Micks, Blacks and pooches.

"what does 'intelligence' have to do with bigotry?"

I was hoping that what I said would warrant such a response. While I don't have any true answer, I do think that a truly bright person can see past patterns and analyze objectively in a given situation.

Also, to "that's like saying anti-white racists are really not racist b/c they speak english, a language which was initially developed among white people".

It is nothing like that, because in many parts of the world speaking English is a requirement to make ends meet. Also, it happens to be the only language taught in school in a number of places. One _chooses_ to listen to reggae.

I'm sure that you know about the period John Lydon spent in Jamaica. I know that if I hated blacks, that'd be the first place I'd go.

Posted by Mark B. | July 21, 2008 3:04 PM

Hey, more importantly, Kele was gettin' beat down, did Lydon happen to say anything to him about PiL reforming?? Specifically, the Metal Box line up?

Fuck man, I know it's been played out to say this for , like, what.. a decade now, but Metal Box is one of my favorite rekkids of all time.

I loved Flowers of Romance and some of the other stuff, but that Levine/Lydon/Wobble/Atkins line up was GREAT. I read Levine HATES Wobble though.. something to do with when Wobble "borrowed" PiL tracks for his solo stuff.

Oh well. If they did do it, I would probably go, it would probably cost a lot of money and it would probably suck.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 12:41

Sorry i was so late to the discussion.

If you think the Sex Pistols have Nazi ties and you back that up with a video clip from the Grundy interview then you are a fucking idiot with no knowledge of that incident or situation. Hopefully you will come to realize the people in the back standing are not members of the band but the local following they had at the time and the stupid childish shock value tactics they were playing with. Certainly not racist but dumb enough that Siouxsie Sioux is still having to deal with it.

If you think the title of Lydon's book is proof he is racist then you again are a total fucking ignoramous and have not read the book. Read the book and you will understand what he was trying to say with that title

Lydon is not a racist at all. This smacks of a lot of bullshit and hype and the truth being somewhere in the middle of everyone's story. Plus I am not sure that talking about Kele's black attitude is a racist statement. At least not over in europe where that reads very differently than over here. Not to mention the charge was not leveled against Lydon for saying this.

A couple of notes

Amy Winehouse's little "nips and blacks" song was done over a year ago maybe longer and not just recently before the Mandela concert. Her husband taped it fools and he has been in jail for almost 9 months

Ignorance and stupidiy are directly tied to racism. Not saying someone smart cant also be a racist fuck but the majority are less than brilliant.

And can someone please tell me who is more of an idiot and loser
a) the meatheads who did that YouTube WHOAAAH CLIP
b) the schmucks who made clips in response
or
c) the dipshit who posted a link to it in this comment thread thinking that was funny

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2008 5:43 PM

Linda Evans punched out Joan Collins. You don't mess with L-Boogie.

Johnny Rotten has been accused of many things and guilty of most of them but he's never been accused of having any problem with black people, not even in the 70s when punk rock racism was fashionable and commercial.

you should all take a deep breath and a step back...

liking reggae in the 70's and being friend with don letts does not automatically mean one is not racist. What kind of world are you all living in ? oh i forgot - your all american white

it's nothing to do with publicity or who makes better records it's about one thing - using race as a verbal weapon in an altercation. something that in this day and age is not acceptable.

this is the same john lydon that grabbed duffy around the throat at the mojo awards for daring to talk to him (he manager is jeanette lee ex-PIL). nice guy....

Posted by destroyyer | July 22, 2008 2:26 AM

You fucking retards should try READING "No Blacks No Dogs No Irish"instead of making assumptions based on its title. It comes from a sign John, an Irish descendant himself, saw in a store window as a youth. "DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER"-i hate to have to state the obvious, but you dimwits leave me no choice.
And to the punk-rock basher: Please, Eric Clapton? Really? Is there a lamest person who ever picked up a guitar? The only redeeming quality on "Layla etc." is Duane Allman. Choke on some patchouli you stupid arrogant hippie, punk rock was a reaction to the likes of you.

w/o being called a racist.

y'all not so "peace and love", you just suffer
from the white american guilt, and rightfully so.

only speculative information. who cares? sex pistols is 30 years ago. right now they are just as absolutely insignificant as Bloc Party. nobody will talk about them in 30 years.

"In general, not a surprise. the people in these bands are typically ignorant and not very intelligent. it doesn't take much creative brilliance to write 1,000 songs that sound exactly the same (Ramones)."

Completely off the mark, ignorant and totally untrue statement. Only an ignorant and unintelligent person like the one who posted the above comment would only see the simplicity of what is being presented on the surface without any of the subtext or anything beyond the simple presentation. That's the pretty funny irony. Obviously the poster didn't get the joke. Most people that don't get the joke or can't see beyond the surface of what is being presented to them aren't that smart.

The Ramones had some very intelligent and creative people in the band and their organization. Yes their presentation was simple, but that was no accident. They had an art director right out of the gate. How many punk bands hired an Art Director when they were just starting? The Ramones presentation was a highly conceptualized one. It was almost a pop-art performance piece as much as a rock show. Basically put... it takes a lot of brains to make yourself look that dumb on purpose. The Ramones style of music, dress, logo, and full identity was no accident. They were smart and those around them were too. Over the years they attracted a more meathead college crowd, but one must not forget that in the early years people like Andy Warhol were coming to see their show.

In Addition, on the surface you could say that the songs all sounded the same, yet the Ramones were very musically savvy. They had a rich understanding and appreciation for pop and rock music of the past, and incorporated a lot of the sounds and references of the history of rock n roll into their songs.

Only a moron would take something at face value: "gee they look like dummies in leather, they must be."

Got news for ya stupid: Guess what... They also weren't brothers!

You have to be kidding! Lydon is the biggest dub reggae head on the planet and most of his closest allies in the punk scene were Black. Lydon is a notorious button-pusher. But a racist? P'wah! Careerists musicians like Kele Okereke should kick their OWN asses for their obvious lack of spine.

Anger is an energy.

John Lydon is not Racist, and he's definitely not a nazi.

“It's a loser's emblem (swastika), because the Nazis lost the war. It's ridiculous to suggest we are involved with fascists. All my best friends are black, gay, Irish or criminals.” -johnny Rotten.

If there's proof, then nobody can deny he attacked the Bloc Party singer,
but it wasn't racially motivated.

Figures.ALL those punk rockers were semi-literate-
if that-nasty,stupid,industrial-city British racists
and fascists.

So its April 7, 2009, around 4 ish pm. Howdy to 'ride this black cowboy' if your still looking at this page or so long bronco buster if you just rid off into the sunset. Now for the main attraction. Okay I am looking deeper into my crystal ball...there it is! oh my word, you english folks are not going to be happy. I predict that Barcelona will beat Manchester United 2-0 in Rome on May 27 to become the new kings of football in europe.

ha! that's funny. read "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs." i was scared Rotten/Lydon was a racist until i read that.

Posted by starve me | August 8, 2009 9:05 PM

lydon may not be a racist, but he is a condescending douche. then again he is english. he once called Obama an "intellectual lightweight" and implied he would never get elected anyway. john, you can say that again.

anon@12:35 i'd rather see you get your head kicked in than eat a peter luger steak

anon@1:45 fuck you.

anon@4:28am the sex pistols were a sort of "super group" brought together by malcom mclaren in 1975. previously mclaren was the manager of the dolls (formed in 1971), the dolls and other ny based bands (neon boys) were the obvious source of inspiration for mclaren's later ventures in the uk.

boo-whoo there are racist white people...as there also are black, hispanic, latino, asian, etc. that are every bit as racist...so fucking what!? where i currently live, people of my particular race are scarce and i know for a fact that my neighbors resent me being there..but like i said before - so fucking what!? i accept racism, it's natural, it's the way things are gonna be.

JOHN LYDON Is NOT Racist! As a kid he witnessed first hand himself what racism was being Irish and living in a predominatley briti$h area! And he didn't say racist things it was his entourage, not him! And as someone else said on this site. Don't talk about PIL to John Lydon, no matter who it is. Hell! It could have even been a white fat old rich business man. And John and his entourage would still be intimidating and aggressive and say something hateful!
