Leonard Cohen played Glastonbury too - videos, setlist
Leonard and his audience (retrotravelbug)

Michael Eavis might have said his goal was to "get the young people back" at this year's Glastonbury Festival - but it was veteran singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen who most impressed the 72-year-old organiser at this year's bash.videos and set list below....Speaking to 'The Independent' today (Tuesday July 1), Eavis, who watched Cohen's Pyramid Stage set from the side of the stage on Sunday June 29, hailed the entire festival as a success, but singled the 73-year-old Canadian legend out for particular praise:
"Leonard Cohen was so polite and such a gentleman. He took his hat off every time he finished a song, and bowed to the audience."
Predictably, the best-received song in Cohen's set was 'Hallelujah', the track which originally appeared on his 1984 album Various Positions, and gained a new lease of life when Jeff Buckley covered it on his acclaimed 1994 album 'Grace'.
Beginning the song just as the sun was setting, Cohen delighted the crowd by changing the lyric, "I told the truth, I didn't come here to fool ya" to "I told the truth, I didn't come to Glastonbury to fool ya". The crowd sang every chorus with Cohen, and gave him a massive ovation at the end. [UNCUT]

anon 5:40 pm....
do you really think he's gonna announce US dates? so far everyone's said he's just not hitting the states at all. period.

Leonard Cohen is amazing! I wish he would perform more often up here in Canada. All about the subtlety in life and story-telling - something that is strangely 'amiss' in new music.

apparently l.cohen's previous manager embezzled most of leonard's savings, while he wasn't paying attention. (during most of the 1990's, leonard spent his time on mt. baldy at a zen monastery, leaving his finances in the wrong hands it now seems). there was a whole legal fall out about it and everything.
which essentially left the poor guy with no choice now but to go back out on the road for one more grand tour, after all these years. fucking tough break for one of the most original voices of the past 50 years, i'll say.
as for the suspiciously absent U.S. dates--i still can't make sense of it, unless their still forthcoming. he's always been more loved in europe, certainly, but there's surely tons of people in the U.S. who would literally pay tons of money to see the old beatnik bard one last time.

Who are these everyone you speak of? They obviously do not work in the concert industry. The dates are forthcoming. They are in late fall. Nothing suspicious about it.

Magic is afoot.

I'm not sure where this "late fall" idea is coming from, but it looks likely that US dates will be in 2009. The promotional items for the tour (posters and the like) describe this tour as a 2008-2009 world tour. Since he has done Canada and is doing Europe now, it looks like the "2009" part will be the US.
I saw him in Toronto last month and he was incredible, playing a 2.5 hour show. Only disappointment is that he has now added some of his best tunes to the set- Avalanche, Famous Blue Raincoat, So Long Marianne and Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye. I might have to catch the US tour as well!
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2008 9:08 AM
ahh... Avalanche just might be his best song. There's a clip on YouTube of him playing it on this tour - so great...
(Nick Cave's version is bitching too. One of the rare examples of an original and a cover being very different yet equally good.)
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2008 9:43 AM
I agree on Cave's version, and would add that Cave's rendition of Tower of Song is also pretty great. The Pixies' 'I Can't Forget' is another winner.

thank you 9:08. It really has been weird the way many people lamented the lack of US dates. The posters have said '08-'09 from the very beginning. Must be those tricky roman numerals. . .
Anyway, I can't wait! (both for the US tour and to find out how broke I'll be afterwards)

meh...
hey guys, when do Crystal Castles go on?
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2008 1:04 PM
the reason why people are unsure about the U.S. dates is because it was all but announced from his camp that there WOULDN'T BE ANY.

anyone else think leonard cohen is a great writer but would be a boooring performer?
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2008 5:53 PM
if you like 12 year old sri lankan girls in day-glo hot pants, lip syncing and prancing around in converse sneakers, then yeah, he'd be boring.
Posted by Anonymous | July 3, 2008 1:15 AM
I'm looking @ my tour poster right here, and it says "2008" not "2008 and 2009" and lists a bunch of dates, none of them are in the US. I seriously doubt he's coming to the US. Most of the dates already listed were listed for months.
In any case, I headed up to Toronto for it just to be safe, and it was fucking brilliant.

I am working out in India & missed him, my wife emailed me to say how much she enjoyed his performance, here are her comments below:
Forgone conclusion he was absolutely fantastic. His voice is just the
same power and tone even tho he is 74 yrs. He was overcome by the
wonderful response he had from the crowd, young and old were
singing all the words to his songs with him and the amount of people
there was phenomenal, the crowd were going mad for him. The
atmosphere was electric. He was as charming and lovely as I had
always imagined him to be. He opened his concert with my favourite
“Dance Me To The End Of Love'. I enjoyed it so much that I think I
will be going to see him again at 'The Big Chill' in Malvern on the
31st July. weekend
What can I say..I think she loves him!....

Kev, I can confirm what your wife says (not that i was with her, lol). I presume your wife was at Glastonbury? It was an indeed an electrifying atmosphere. I'm the shootist of a number of the glastonbury clips on youtube. Presuming the bbc would broadcast the Cohen set, or much of it, I only shot them for my own archive with a view to put no more than 2 or 3 on to youtube but then put them all up. this one, 'hellelujah', made it on to the indepedent's website:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tPQQLMXmQ4
This one, 'Tower of Song', is full of good humour:

Do go the big chill. i am. day tickets are available. quite a few cohen fans will be there!
best, 'routeoz'
