Millions for new Coney Island amphitheater
Brian Wilson show in Coney Island - July 17, 2008 (Rubys Host)

Borough President Marty Markowitz brought home nearly $90 million worth of bacon in capital funding from the fiscal year 2009 city budget, according to Borough Hall documents.Leading the charge were two of Markowitz's pet projects: a new amphitheater at Asser Levy Park in Coney Island ($29.3 million) and renovations to the historic Loew's Kings Theatre on Flatbush Avenue ($10.75 million).
"The Coney Island Center will be a much-needed community resource as well as bring to Coney Island the kind of state-of-the-art performance facility Brooklyn deserves," said Markowitz, who has been holding a summer concert series in the park since he took office.
"New York City's first covered, outdoor performance space will make our borough a natural stop on the summer concert circuit for entertainers who now play Jones Beach and Westbury Theater and the PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey," he added.
Markowitz said the amphitheatre will also serve as "a cherished landmark at the gateway to the revitalized Coney Island, and help to ensure Coney remains the 'Playground of America' for this and future generations."
According to sources, the proposed amphitheatre will have an 8,000 seating capacity, and a schematic design is in process now with a groundbreaking expected in late summer 2009. [Your Nabe]

nobody cares about this because they figure they'll be back in Ohio by the time it's finished being built anyway.

now can we please also have a train that will go from Midtown to Coney in less than hour and a half? Shit was ridiculous last time we went

Yeah, they should make a train that gets anywhere that's an hour and a half away from Midtown in less time than an hour and a half.
Everything should be quicker than it is and everything should be cheaper than it is and everything should be easier than it is.
But it's not.
That's how long it takes. Deal with it. If you don't want to travel then stay in midtown.
Who the hell lives in midtown anyway? If you are rich enough to live in midtown Manhattan then you can afford to take a car service or a taxi to Coney Island and it will be faster than the subway, so shut up.

Love how the transplants that now live in Manhattan complain how long it takes them to get to Coney by subway. Millions of New Yorkers have been making that trek for over a hundred years without complaining, but some recent newbies just can't take the "Loooong' journey. How long would it take you to travel from your home back in the mid-west to ANYTHING even remotely interesting? A heck longer than an hour an a half. Pay your two dollars sit on the train, cross your arms and your legs, keep your mouth shut and your money in your wallet and wait for the train to pull in to the Stillwell station. Reward yourself with some Nathans and thank the stars that you live here and it only took you 90 minutes to get from your expensive condo in Midtown.

i find it implausible that it took you over 90 minutes to get to coney island from midtown unless you began your trip at 3am.
do you never take the subway?
did you get lost looking for the nearest subway?

the renovated loew's theatre should be amazing:

The automobile... maybe you've heard of it.

Born and raised New Yorker (Brooklyn, not too far from Coney Island) here...
I made the same comment last week while in the midst of a hour plus subway ride to Midtown. I live in Murray Hill (let the cliched Murray Hill insults commence)
The MTA really should run weekend express trains to CI on one of the lines that terminate there....or how about a ferry or water taxi from downtown?
My questions about this amphitheater are:
1. Where will people park?
2. How are they going to keep the people who live in all the neighboring buildings happy? There is no way they will stand for all the traffic and concert noise. Where the amphitheater is going to be located is a few blocks from all the amusements and it really is a residential area.

soon, coney island, you may be fortunate enough to resemble the rezoned kent avenue, with half-finished luxury condos and lots of yellow tape around them. Lucky you!
