"more unknown bands are getting slots on late-night TV"
White Rabbits in Prospect Park (more by Chris La Putt)

White Rabbits were en route to Cleveland last year when pianist Stephen Patterson received a call inviting the young Brooklyn septet to perform on The Late Show with David Letterman. "I completely freaked out," Patterson says. "I pulled off at a highway rest stop and we just ran around the van, calling our moms and dads."Becoming elated over such news is more or less obligatory. Nellie McKay remembers "jumping in the air and doing a kind of flippery arm motion" upon being informed of her first Letterman booking; Spoon frontman Britt Daniel says he was "absolutely shocked" when told that Saturday Night Live had scheduled his band. But at the time of their Late Show invitation, White Rabbits were without a label apparatus, press clippings or even fans. "We got back in the van, drove to Cleveland and played a show for five people," Patterson says. When the day of the taping arrived, the musicians--whose vehicle had been stolen near their Bushwick home--hired a "man with a van" to drive them to the Ed Sullivan Theater. While waiting in the green room, they received another call, this time from their landlord. Their rent was overdue. [Time Out]

Case in point - tonight on letterman: Low Vs Diamond (formerly Colored Shadows). I know them because I know family of the band, but am SHOCKED they're playing Letterman tonight. They're playing the EARLY show at Mercury tomorrow. Weird booking, right?

no woman can understand how it feels to have a raging woodrow wilson after being booked on letterman. for the unaware, dave letterman is a later night tv host with big thingys.

Low Vs Diamond is on a major label. That's funny, I'm preparing a statement for them right now.

I blame MTV, what with their specials on Brooklyn and Portland and Vampire Weekend. Indie is somehow the new in.

it's just like more indie music cropping up in ads these days. which is great! in my opinion.

if a band is whoring its songs out to help giant corporations sell cars or phones or potato chips it's not exactly "indie" (independent) anymore is it....
Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2008 3:29 PM
Paramore broke up?!?!?!?!
Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2008 3:29 PM
what's wrong with trying to sell cars, phones, and potato chips? what are you fucking communist?
if so, get the fuck out of the US and move to Cuba.

i've engaged in this "selling out" argument on other blogs. it's completely moot at this point in history. very few bands can actually support themselves touring and putting out albums for an indie label. when the opportunity comes along to get paid to use your song in a hummer commercial, a smart person takes the money and laughs all the way to the bank. it doesn't make you less independent to be able to afford food, rent, studio time etc.

i think the bottom is that they're aren't a lot of great bands out there and letterman/conan/etc has a band play every night. that's a lot of bands.

guys, fake rumors about Paramore being broken up are not funny. it might come as a surprise to YOU but their are some people on this blog that are FANS of them, so if you have NOTHING nice to say please don't say it. thank you

^^^lol really?
Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2008 5:09 PM
Damn, talk about desperate times. When is Matt and Kim going to be on Late Night?
Posted by Anonymous | July 29, 2008 5:35 PM
no, Paramore did not break up they're playing Mcarren Pool next weekend and the crowd will be twice as large as MGMT.
This will then cause the entire music industry to collapse on itself, leaving the world deaf.
