Nas at Fox News - July 23, 2008 (ColorOfChange.Org)
Nas

Nasty Nas showed up in Midtown yesterday, for a little while at least. Nas lead a protest by ColorOfChange.Org at the house O'Reilly built (aka Fox News) in order to hand deliver a petition of 620,127 signatures charging the network with racist reporting. The petition alleges that the network is inherently racist, pointing to several incidents involving Barack Obama and his treatment by the network. The incidents in question include referring to Michelle Obama as "Obama's baba mama", alluding to the assassination of Obama, and referring to the infamous onstage fist pound as a "terrorist fist jab" (an obvious Obama-Osama dig).

Nas said, "Fox poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news". Fox News responded, "Fox News believes in all protesters exercising their right to free speech including Nas who has an album to promote."

After the protest, Nas showed up at The Colbert Report to discuss "papa bear" (Colbert's nickname for O'Reilly) and Fox News, as well as perform "Sly Fox" (about guess what), a song from his new album titled, um, Untitled. Nas & Bill O'Reilly have been feuding, with Nas even challenging him to a debate.

Ah... Nasty Nas. Now, if we can just get him to show up on record again.

Nas is touring with Talib Kweli, including one date at Rock The Bells with A Tribe Called Quest at Jones Beach and another far more intimate one at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. Nas's former co-conspirator AZ is playing the Knitting Factory with Sadat X (but you can call him X-Man).

His song was excellent--it got me a little politically inspired even, we have the voters in florida, ohio, etc., maybe Nas can get them out.

...and the award for most incredibly enormous idiot of the year is presented to Nas. Great public comment by Fox News though about promoting his album.

But are they more racist than Rev Wright? Doubt it.

The pot calling the kettle black.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 9:36 AM

Rocky Napoli wonders how Nas can possibly be the most incredibly enormous idiot of the year? Certainly there must be many, many bigger idiots than Nas if Nas is even an idiot at all, which Rocky Napoli doesn't think.

Posted by Rocky Napoli | July 25, 2008 9:37 AM

Rocky Napoli would love to see Nas give Bill O'Reilly a beat down.

"At least he's doing something important and interesting while you all sit in your cubes and call him a loser."

Yes, it's sooooo importnat to call a network racist that has plenty of african-americans on all the time. Nas is a joke. Always much easier to point the finger at "the Man" than take responsibility for your own shit.

What does Rev Wright have to do with Nas? Nice way to twist things 9:36 and 9:48.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 10:01 AM

"What does Rev Wright have to do with Nas? Nice way to twist things 9:36 and 9:48."

Nas is calling out Fox as racist b/c the network has allegedly made racist comments about Obama. Obama's spiritual mentor for 20 years is a racist, anti-white, anti-Semite. That's what. Learn the facts instead of drinking the Kool Aid.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 10:05 AM

Go away... hip hop sucks..

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 10:07 AM

I am with Nas on this. Not that I necessarily believe Fox News is racist per se, but I do believe that the talking heads, actually screaming heads way that Americans are spoon fed their news by this and other channels is a reason that many (most?) Americans are woefully ill informed regarding matters that actually matter whereas everybody knows everything about Britney, Justin, Angelina and other "celebs." Nas might be tilting at windmills here, but he is not wrong to target Fox News for his wrath, especially that disgusting and not very bright punk Bill O'Reilly. I can see how somebody might not like Nas, but how anybody can come on here and actually defend Fox News because they don't like Nas is just asinine.

Posted by Jaguar Gorgonne | July 25, 2008 10:11 AM

'black as I wanna be'! seriously, Obama is the affirmative action nominee. he has no legislative or executive record. he's never managed anything. how did he rise so fast with practically no experience or record? oh, I know. white guilt! this is how affirmative action works in politics and in the business world. inexperienced blacks get promoted too early and fast and then turn out to be a big letdown.

but fox news drilled the rev. wright story to death in its never-ending propaganda campaign against obama. part of that campaign has included subtle and not-so-subtle reminders that obama is black, is a muslim, terrorist, whatever. we all know fox news exists to promote the republican party and its reporting of the news is laughably dishonest.
nas, however, is pseudo-intellectual trash, which unfortunately is the fate of most rappers who try to involve politics in their lyrics.
i did get a kick out of him titling an album nigger. so did fox news. they're so not racist, they love to talk up the "n-word" controversies.

Rocky Napoli has his doubts about Obama as he does with most candidates but thinks that the man has excellent qualifications and to presume he is where he is because of affirmative action sounds to Rocky Napoli a bit too much like sour graps from a grumpy white guy. Rocky Napoli thinks the current occupant of that esteemed white house has benefited from more affirmative action than Obama ever will, I mean, Rocky just has to wonder why it isn't called affirmative action when an average student at best gets admitted to fancy ivy league schools just because his dad and granddaddy went there. Need Rocky remind you that Obama got into those schools and excelled there on his on merit? Rocky wonders what qualifications one thinks Obama lacks? Rocky wonders if McCain is qualified just by virtue of being in the Senate forever and because he was shot down during the Vietnam war? Rocky wonders what McCain has actually ever done? Rocky wonders if McCain, who seems like a nice enough guy, is qualified just by virtue that it is his turn? Rocky isn't a true believer in Obama because he finds Obama to be a bit too much of a centrist, but Rocky does think he is qualified especially since the bar is pretty low for that job -- GW, Reagen . . . .

i love how liberalism got too common amongst the hipster types so they have now all done the inevitable backlash they always do and are now conservative for no other reason than to be "different". what a joke. nas is no political genius but seriously, defending fox news? get real you fucking losers.

not everyone on BV and not everyone making these "conservative" statements is a hipster. some people on the site just like the music for the music and not to be part of some hipster sub-culture. one's taste in music shouldn't relegate him/her to a particular political view.

Rev Jackson will cut Nas's nuts out.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 10:45 AM

Dearest Rocky Napoli. I respect your opinion. But I'll have you know that Affirmative Action is the most blatant form of reverse discrimination and racism ever instituted by a government in the last 50 years. It is a policy that is disproportionately hostile towards asian americans. someone should seriously sue the pants off Uncle Sam for this racist shite. why do I pay taxes to be treated unfairly? pure shite, bring down the government.

so dear Rocky, it really ticks me off to see someone like Obama who had all the breaks and then-some with affirmative action pretend like he really deserves to be where he is... he has accomplished nada... can anyone tell me one major legislative or executive accomplishment he has made or contributed to? no, because he is the affirmative action nominee and all you hipsters have succumb to the typically cliche feelings associated with white guilt. if you have complaints about Bush, well that's just nepotism. not sure how you fight that. but at least do not institutionalize racism like affirmative action and then expect everyone to support inexperienced leaders.

I didn't realize that's what this debate was about, Rocky Napoli , but you do speak the truth . . .

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 10:56 AM

whether Fox is truly racist or not, or inappropriate or not, let's face it, Nas is just trying to get publicity. he tried to name his album the n-word. he might as well have named the album, "i am not nearly as popular as other pop stars, and i am desperate for attention and fame, and therefore i'm going to name my album the most taboo word in american society just for shock value and attention."
now that the album is named "untitled" or something like that, he's gotta do something else for attention, which is what he's doing now.

i'm sure you could just as easily go on any other tv network, including BET, and nitpick out evidence of "racism."

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 10:58 AM

stupidest comment thread ever.

Posted by sea hag | July 25, 2008 11:01 AM

ok, here's something to think about...

Nas and other African-Americans could actually get away with naming an album the N-word, b/c they're black. makes sense in some way.

what if a half-black/half-white person were to do it? would it be just as acceptable?

what if a person 1/4 black were to do it?

and now for a big question.... what if a person 1/8 black, aka an octaroon, were to do it? if an octaroon were to do it, i can't imagine anyone accepting it.

so here is the million dollar question- at what fraction or percentage or "black" can you name an album the n-word and get away with it? where do you draw the line?

the point is that race is not important. we're all people. let's just all get along and act like brothers and sisters. one day we'll all be beige.

hallelujah!

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 11:16 AM

geez to hear what brooklyn vegan readers have to say about this is more disappointing and upsetting than the very much racist slander on foxnews. if fox is winning, its because the people who are supposed to be aware and intelligent enough to see through their propaganda are actually too self important and elitist to give a shit.

Rocky Napoli needs to get an education and stop acting like a know-it-all diplomatic infant.

While I neither overtly like Obama or McCain, for you to say that Obama has excellent qualifications is ridiculous. Because he went to Harvard, because he is an excellent speaker. The man has served one term in office and was a city organizer when you were still getting into the first Interpol album.

You wonder what McCain has ever done??? Read a book or go online...It's all there! Strict gun laws, immigration reform, campaign finance reform.

I will vote for Obama b/c I don't want Rowe v. Wade overturned and I think we need a plan to exit Iraq...not because he is the "hope" of our future.

Posted by Yoshi | July 25, 2008 11:48 AM

Rocky Napoli thinks it is appalling that Asian Fever thinks Obama has benefited from affirmative action just because he is black. Rocky Napoli thinks maybe the problem here is that Asian Fever assumes any black person who is "ahead" of him got it only because of affirmative action which is ridiculous.

Rocky Napoli also wonders how nepotism isn't affirmative action for white people?

Rocky Napoli thinks there must be many people in America more qualified than Obama to be president, but that does not make Obama unqualified.

Holy shit people saying some stupid things here. Regardless of whether you think Obama is "qualified" or not to be president because he has only been in politics for so long, he was editor of the Harvard law review. You don't become editor of the Harvard law review by sitting on your ass - you need a combination of excellent grades and writing skills to even be on the law review in the first place. He also taught classes in constitutional law at University of Chicago law school. These things speak volumes about him, but I guess maybe people don't think that they mean anything.

Posted by litigioushipster | July 25, 2008 12:02 PM

Rocky Napoli did not realize that one had to be a political insider to be qualified to be President of the United States and he issues a heart felt apology to those he offended by suggesting otherwise. Rocky Napoli had no idea that grass roots political activits from the inner city who have dedicated their lives to something other than power lunches with lobbyists were required to sit in the Senate for a certain predetermined amount of years before running for President. Rocky Napoli just had no idea about this and apologizes for thinking that the Constitution should be his guideline for who is qualifed to be President. Rocky Napoli actually hates Interpol but has some familiarity with the US Constitution and was not aware of the qualifications for President some are suggesting here. Rocky Napoli says "sorry."

Rocky Napoli thinks if people want to criticize Obama then that is fair game since the man is running for president, but Rocky suggests his policies are criticized not his race or whether he may or may not have benefitted from affirmative action. In fact, Rocky Napoli is very critical of Obama on the issues but still feels the man is perfectly qualified to be President.

Posted by Rocky Napoli | July 25, 2008 12:13 PM

Conan O'Brien was the only person the ever be the editor of Harvard's paper 2 years in a row...Is he now qualified?

So why not just pick a random Mensa member or the guy in your office who reads the paper everyday to run for President....they must be smart enough.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 12:18 PM

I think Conan lacks the public service background but not the intelligence to be President. I am not even sure why we are having this debate to begin with since the fucking shrub we have for Prez now isn't even remotely qualified to be President based on any category anybody can think of. But now people want to criticize Barack basically because he is young and hasn't been rotting in Congress (physically and ethically) for decades? Please.

Yoshi, Asianfever and Rocky Napoli:

Yes, white guilt plays a role in Obama's rise. No, I'don't think he is anything new or different from other politicians.

I just think that he's the better major party option for president in 2008.

Interestingly, it seems all three of you hold roughly that position, and yet you squabble. . .

the president has hundreds of brilliant, over-educated people, payed for by the taxpayers of course, to advise him and in the end pretty much make decisions for him.

who the fuck cares who gets elected president? does it matter? i think it's funny that people think that electing Obama will radically change things in this country. the president is just a front. all he/she has to do is give speeches and shake hands. the country is and has always been run by people other than the president.

It actually does matter who gets elected president since not only is that person commander and chief, but also the one responsible for appointing all of those supposedly brilliant people who actually do all the work. Some might also argue that appointing Supreme Court and other federal judges is not insignificant. So, yeah, the political philosophy of the chief decider is kind of important.

Wow, just wow.

You guys are questioning Obama's lack of experience. Understandable. He was only in the Senate for two years. But he saw the opportunity to run and he did, and his Presidency could be a welcome departure from the last twenty years of Bush/Clinton/Bush rule. I mean Hillary almost won the nomination, and is American government supposed to be a democracy or a monarchy where two families trade places to every few years to lead the most powerful nation in the world? We need a change. Wake the fuck up. If you guys don't see the differences between him and McCain you all need to stop what you are doing and read a fucking newspaper. The war in Iraq, Bush's tax cuts, Habeas Corpus to prisoners at Guantanomo, offshore drilling, and the Supreme Court are just a few of the matters where they differ. The court is just one or two justices away from being the most right wing it has ever been, and you all might not give a shit now, but it really is important.

As for Nas, he is right in calling Fox News racist. So what if they have black people on? They are the most conservative black people in the country. Their views do not reflect the views of the average black person, they reflect the views of the conservative white establishment. Fox News has used hateful smear tactics that are not accurate for years, and it is no different with Obama. Either you all aren't paying attention or BV is filled with more O'Reilly lovers than I'd ever imagined.

Nas has been one of the smartest, thought-provoking rappers since Illmatic first came out. Nas is controversial, divisive and many other things, but he is not an idiot. If you believe that, you know nothing about hip-hop and your opinion should be stricken from the record. If you don't agree with him fine, but at least respect the fact that he is speaking his mind in a thoughtful and articulate way, which is more than I can say for the vast majority of you posters. God forbid I have an opinion and I explain it to you losers. Read a paper and shut up.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 1:07 PM

of course the president has the power to appoint and fire and invade and be "commander-in-chief", etc, etc, but my point was, do you think that he's making his own decison? he's being influenced by the same people who influence Bush. it's the same fucking people - people with money and with a vested interest in making more money. the same people who partially own the Internal Revenue Service, which by the way is not constitutional and is not even a completely public entity.

and of course i think the Gore administration would have invaded Iraq, Hubert V. are you that naive, or moronic, as you might say, to think it wouldn't have?

i think it's funny how the typical idealisitc young american campaigning for Obama thinks he/she is actually making a difference.
the average joe american, including myself, has no idea what really goes on in Washington.

Jaguar, sounds like you just took an intro to political science or U.S. government course in high school.

no shit the president can do those things and is commander-in-chief.

the point being made, whether it's valid or not, was that although the president offically has these powers, he virtually doesn't have these powers b/c other people are telling him what to do. i'm not saying i believe that, but that was the point that the other poster was trying to make.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 1:26 PM

@Anon12:18 - Not that this in and of itself qualifies anyone to be President, but there's a big difference between being the editor of Harvard Law School's Law Review and being the editor for Harvard University's campus paper.

Posted by blackhat | July 25, 2008 1:29 PM

"i think it's funny how the typical idealisitc young american campaigning for Obama thinks he/she is actually making a difference.

It saddens me to see how people manage to justify their apathy. There is nothing stopping you from becoming more informed, from finding out what is really going in Washington, from gettimg involved in politics, from getting off your ass. By the way, I know it is hard, because the whole thing is rather corrupt, but all politics is local so get off your ass and do something unless you are satisfied to be an "average joe" in which case STFU and leave it to those young, idealistic people you love/hate to seal your destiny.

This whole debate between Nas and O'Reilly is not only shining a light on the fact that Fox News is a propaganda machine, but it's also shining a light on the people in America who have been brainwashed by the one-sided media that this country has provided for the past decade. I'm just glad someone intelligent, like Nas, is standing up to help finally opening some of these peoples' eyes.

It's surprising to see that these brainwashed idiots are even attempting to argue their perspectives. Doesn't AOL.com or The Post have an article about a new Paris Hilton sex tape or something. Please go and feed your fat-ass ignorance. It's hungry again.

10:39 has this conversation characterized perfectly.

SO predictable.

Posted by sea hag | July 25, 2008 2:13 PM

the hipsters are definitely the conforming non-conformists of our time.

Rocky rocks.

Truly this was an enjoyable thread to read. Where else can you laugh and be horrified at the same time
Boy there are a lot of stupid people in this world not to mention a lot of evil ones as well which sort of makes any attempt at being genuine and noble unreachable.

A few thoughts though

Nas was excellent at Blender last week. Almost 2 hr show with Rev Run on stage as well.

Bill O' Reilly when he was a much younger man and before his idiotic duities today wrote a sleazy disgusting Lolita type novel. It is true. Do your research.

Surprisingly as it may seem, Rocky Napoli made some very good points.

That is all

If you listen to Obama speak about any topic of substance, it's obvious he's a smart person. Maybe you agree, maybe you don't but he's clearly intelligent. To say he's the beneficiary of affirmative action, especially given his record at Harvard is bullshit, and, um, racist ("even the black guy who seems from all measures, including blind grading at the top law school in the country, to be really bright, is actually too stupid to actually be really bright").

Progressing is if you move yourself into a different place and you're on a search or a quest. People don't like to be uprooted. They want to have that comfortable place that has a face that will always be there and a voice that sounds familiar and will always be there. So when these things get stirred up or broken, people get mad. They don't see it as a progression; they see it as a disruption.

@Rocky Napoli - While your "speaking only in third person" schtick could get a little old, it's clear that you're a pretty intelligent person. We need you here!

Posted by blackhat | July 25, 2008 4:19 PM

you know there's something wrong when Rocky Napoli and AMNBA are beacons of reason and intelligence in a thread

god. this was depressing

Posted by kate | July 25, 2008 5:33 PM

an fyi for everyone going on about how great Obama is for graduating from Harvard... here's some news.. Harvard is a joke. it's damn easy once you get accepted. all you need is some blow, some Affirmative Action and you're on your way to the White House. yahhhhhh boyyy! public enemy in da house!

"hey dad, it's geoff. brooklyn is great. listen, i really don't have any money. how's omaha?"
"omaha sucks son, that's why you left. it's ok son, vote for mccain so i can get more money and so can you!"
"geee dad, you're swell! you can count on me!"
"geoff, if i catch you buying any nas albums, i'll lynch you!"
"oh dad, you're so funny. i have many color people in my area."
"that's why i wanted you in park slope, son."
(this message is approved by john mccain)

^^^^^^ahahahaha! i think you mean blacks. not black.

Is Nas saying that Michelle is NOT Barack's babies' moma?!?!?

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 9:37 PM

I downloaded the leak of Obama's presidency, and it sucked.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 11:38 PM

Yeah. Sonic Youth is totally lame for contributing to that Starb... oh.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 12:15 AM

^blackhat: _wince_Rocky napoli_/wince_ inconsistently eschews use of pronouns, as well as being self referential in third person. Is there a word for "compulsion to use one's own name when a pronoun would be better"? Because that's what RN has.

White middle class hipsters commenting on racial politics and media = FAIL!

Posted by calvin | July 26, 2008 10:50 AM

Fox News is the propaganda machine of the fascist, constitution-hating, world-destroying Bush administration. Fuck you.
Now some right-wing jerk-off rich fuck is going to comment about how us "liberals" don't know anything about politics. Fuck you.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 11:42 AM

Poor Nas, his album is not selling.

First the controversial album title, now Fox News. Perhaps he should concentrate on making music instead of promotion. Not everyone can be Madonna.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 12:24 PM

RON PAUL 2008!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 12:30 PM

Bill O'dilldo Oriely is the biggest loser on earth. Fox news is a close second.

Posted by david | July 26, 2008 4:31 PM

Bill O'Reilly isn't nearly as bad as Sean Hannity or Ann Coulter.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 4:35 PM

As a public figure, a popular recording artist, a rapper; Nas has elected to invigor thought in the people, clashing with a popular media station who alway project their opinions strongly. Fox News hardly ever speaks for issues that can better our lives, besides by all their talk about us being protected by terrorists. Mainstream media is like MTV, some corporate owned mind controlling shit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 5:30 PM

Sean Hannity is a joke. I'd love to see him strung up from a tree!

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 5:55 PM

holy shit - I have got to stop reading bk vegan comments. I think I just got dumber

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 8:45 PM

I don't care about Nas but Fox and the gang is clearly getting away with making americans less intelligent every day. Even the some of the hipsters can't brake out of the hypnotizing effects of the elite's tools. It's obvious Fox News, your gov't and it's mindless follow the leader, too afraid to think critically and intelligently against the power kind of people people are ruining your country.

The decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2008 11:06 PM

There's a reason the rest of the world laugh at America, it's because so many of you are naive towards Fox News.

In New Zealand we watch Fox News as a comedy show. You can't seriously think it's news can you?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:35 AM

Yeah, in Canada we also view Fox News as a comedy show. Are many of you seriously suggesting that one consider it anything other than a joke? This is why the rest of the world hates you.

I opine that there's not a pretty good idea to write the research essay by your own efforts! I think, that would be faster to buy the term paper format at the essays online service, because it can save free time.

Posted by Lisaxv28 | February 18, 2010 7:34 PM

Just because one could write for Family Guy in their sleep doesn't mean they SHOULD...Abe Lincoln said that...

Posted by Gut Feeling/(Slap your Mammy) | March 15, 2010 11:46 AM

A year ago I created the humanities essays paper. So, I could argue that such kinds of tasks were more difficult than usual essay. Consequently it becomes not simple to adopt some new kind of assignment!
