Native Korean Rock (Karen O) played Union Pool in Brooklyn

For just about a half hour, she showcased a collection of love songs on par with the latter tracks from Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Show Your Bones (most notably 'Warrior' & 'Sweets'), backed by a quintet comprised of strings, drums & guitars. [The Music Slut]Setlist below...

THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
She's the best.

One of those moments in your life you will never forget! The songs couldn't have been more beautiful and sincere. The MySpace demos are really the most basic rough draft of what was heard. Very on par with the newest PJ Harvey tracks.

i want to kill i-phone video guy. why was everyone soooo intent on getting a picture of karen oh???
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 3:01 AM
that was really really REALLY great.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 3:23 AM
simply beautiful.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 4:25 AM
I was completely shocked by how great the songs were, how positive the vibe was... and by the fairly elaborate stage setup. Karen was really singing from the S Seoul.
Kinda surprised BV just used that one stinkin' photo. Really doesn't do it justice. And everyone and their grandmother was taking photos at this thing, so I doubt it's too hard to find a decent one.
but I digress.... hopefully we hear more from Korean Native Rock. It's really something special.
Posted by wembley | July 22, 2008 6:35 AM
oh yeah... and the screaming part was AWESOME!
Posted by wembley | July 22, 2008 6:36 AM
The music was great but the people taking pictures was out of control I am talking about you green shirt, red shirt, asian girl with floral pattern dress and guy with the Morrissey shirt. How many photos do you need of the same thing.

Funny reading some of these early comments. Must be the Karen-0 worshipers who thought those leaked solo demos a while back were "amazing". Late show was very nice but not on par with the overhyped responses you see above and from The Music Shit blog. The songs are way more fleshed out than what is on the MySpace page but still in their early stages. It was really just a simple nice VERY SHORT little show. No way can you compare this to anything PJ Harvey is doing now. Not nearly close to being in the same class of greatness. "One of those moments in your life you can never forget" Yes, this is true if you plan on not attending another show for the rest of your life. Also, wembley, the band is called Native Korean Rock and why were you so shocked at the positive vibe? Have you only been seeing bands like Skrewdriver in concert all this time?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 7:59 AM
Anon@7:59, you really socked it to them. Wow, they'll definitely think twice next time they enjoy something.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:27 AM
agreed - photo bullshit was way too much. but great space to see the show...incredible energy. it seemed like karen-o was very relaxed, and you could tell she so pumped to be showcasing those songs.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:37 AM
i thought the show was a disaster. Not even on par with a bradford cox bedroom recording.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:39 AM
I thought my opinion about the show was the best one.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:43 AM
i like bradford cox's bedroom recordings. so i might like it a little bit less?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:44 AM
You ever hear of the phrase "take a picture it last longer" for people who stare?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:51 AM
i know this might be a controversial comment, but did you guys find Karen's parents to be a little mean? One guy wanted to use the stool that was next to her dad and her dad was like go away thats my stool. Also it looked like he was bossing around that one kid right by the stage with the camera (karen's brother?) Also I didn't see them smile at all. I don't know I wish they could be more loose, talk to the fans or something, enjoy the show more (maybe it's the nerves?) anyway thats my two cents, saw the late show.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:55 AM
>photo bullshit was way too much
it's this way at every show now.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 8:58 AM
Who were the other musicians she played with?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 9:08 AM
I didnt catch names but there was a fat bearded guy drummer, 2 hot girls on violins, and a guy on bass guitar, and theme for the band was sea shanty, as you can tell from the photo.

Fat guy with beard on drums is actually Russell Simins of the Blues Explosion. Amazing drummer, suprised nobody knew that. He isn't really that fat any more.

i quite like TMS's photo...
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 10:15 AM
if this was a disaster..then bring on more disasters!
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 10:18 AM
however they dont really capture the scene, do they? obv flash was used in those pics.
the stage was all in shadows and they cleverly hooked up the lights to make them shimmer, using reflecting paper etc, so it was all mysterious and dark and sea shore like, including sounds of waves etc.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 10:27 AM
wow, her parents were there? effing awesome. she's a rich Jersey girl whose parents paid her NYU tuition in full so she could spend her days looking trendy and cool and then invite her benefactors to hip secret shows in Brooklyn. effing cool. This is the New New York. say goodbye to the old.

karen went to oberlin. atleast get your facts straight in your mass generalization of someone you don't know.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 10:44 AM
yes, she went to Oberlin and then transferred to Tisch after her dad cashed in at the hedge fund. like I said, effing awesome. the New New York.

hating people because someone in their family might have some money is so old school new york.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 10:52 AM
I THOUGHT THE CAMERA FLASHES REALLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE WHOLE THUNDERSTORM-ON-THE-HIGH-SEAS EFFECT. AND BOY WAS THAT TINY SHIP TOSSED!
Posted by i'm scurred | July 22, 2008 10:57 AM
All the money in the world can't make good records (see Paris Hilton.) Karen O is great, with or without rich parents. Plenty of "old school" New York hipsters had money too.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:02 AM
The strokes are from rich families too why don't you go hate on them squid brain.
Posted by lil weezy | July 22, 2008 11:12 AM
ok, everyone slow down. I never said anything bad about Karen's music. I think she's talented and a good performer, (although the Yeahs were/are a bit over-hyped).
I just think the whole 'rich parent's' track to success is a bit annoying and old in the context of how expensive it is in NY nowadays. only rich kids get to make carefree art anymore and can invite their parents to shows! Think of all the great art out there that is hindered out there because we're all slaving away at work! I doubt Karen ever had a real job in her life!
She came out of that whole Strokes rich kids scene and when fame and fortune have forsaken her, she'll always have that to go back to. And she's from Jersey! yuck!
Posted by BroughtToYouBy | July 22, 2008 11:14 AM
overall a pretty terrific debut. their music was lush, enchanting and pretty, coupled with their sailor outfits and sounds of the sea playing in the background, a great experience. and of course karen was super charming.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:14 AM
No! Don't hate on the Strokes! Not THE STROKES!
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:16 AM
I kinda get what you're saying. I have to work 43 hours a week to get by and if I had it my way I'd be spending that time making mind blowing music on my git box. Instead my music making time is limited thus making it harder to get shit done and catch a break ect.

10:41...what kind of camera did you use w/o a flash?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:30 AM
"only rich kids get to make carefree art anymore and can invite their parents to shows! "
You don't know much about art do you. Art has been made by the privileged for as long as there has been art and there is nothing wrong with that. Unfortuantely most people do not have the oppurtunity or chance to make art.

it's more about the lens and less about the camera.
read up about camera aperture and then find something with a big hole and all the glory will be yours.

i was born and raised in nyc. both of my parents were village artist types. they were both born in new jersey. you realize it is possible to be cool, born in nj, think nj is not cool, and move to nyc?

If I was born in New Jersey I would kill myself straight up.

This show was great, I felt lucky to be there. It was intimate, the perfect length, and Karen O was so sincere about every workd she was singing. I know I'll get reamed for this here, but I almost cried twice. Boo effing hoo, I know....
Posted by Lindsay Ann | July 22, 2008 1:09 PM
the guitarist was Rick from Hot Snakes, if I'm not mistaken. With his little sailor suit and his Beatles hair he reminded me of the Gilligan episode where the Beatles arrive on the island (except they're called the Mosquitos).
I expected the songs to be good (I'm a big YYYs fan) but I was really surprised at HOW good they were.

I figured it had to be an SLR. Tough to get pics that nice with a point and shoot, which is usually only allowed w/o photog passes

Rick Froberg rules! Now I'm sorry I missed this...
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 2:11 PM

Very cool to see a more restrained Karen O. She does have a beautiful voice when's she's not yelling.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 2:27 PM
isnt patti smith from jersey? and just cause you are born into a family that will invest in your art is that a bad thing? Brought to you by is an old loser.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 2:38 PM
More power to you if you are truly talented and you're born to parents that have worked hard and are well off as a result and have the ability to nurture your talents and give you the opportunity to follow you're dreams.
Besides I believe it's Karen's hard work and raw talent that has truly brought her success.
As for Jerz and this is coming from a native NYCer, some of the most beautiful, funny, intelligent, and extremely hard working people I've ever met come from that state. I don't give a shit where you're from just as long as you're cool. I can't believe how stupid some of you appear to be.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 3:27 PM
jesus, can the money conversation be any more annoying? why do you live in new york if you're going to work 43 hours a week at a job you don't like and be too burned out to contribute to the artistic community (which you so love to critique)?
regardless, i have friends who work all day and make art all night, who barely scrape by money-wise and produce amazing shit (and get recognized).
make art or make money or figure out how to make both. just do something and stop trying to tear talented people apart because you're too cowardly, stupid or talentless to try and do something that matters (to you even).
fucking embarrasing. and this heat!! imma blow my top.

That is NOT Rick Froberg. Please.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2008 11:08 PM
the show was great. but that dude sam from mooney suzuki was so cheesy. he's an old washed up douchebag who thinks he's too cool for school. he's really old and sad and not even a good guitar player. why did they use him? everytime someone took a picture, he was staring into the camera, as if to grab a glimmer of his youth!
Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2008 1:59 AM
BroughtToYouBy is a fucking idiot.
Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2008 10:51 AM
the violinist and string arranger was Gillian Rivers, who also went to Oberlin
Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2008 1:09 PM
How do I go about getting a copy of any of this Karen O Korean music?
Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2008 1:23 PM
anon1:59, doubtful that karen o would have picked him to be in her band if he was a bad guitar player, everyone on that stage was very talented and sounded great. sounds like youre the one whos sad and washed up.
Posted by adam | July 23, 2008 3:01 PM
that wasnt rick froberg, it was the guy that plays bass for 'the pierces'. does anyone know who the string players were? they were excellent.
