Bloc Party - Mercury

Bloc Party gave a world exclusive first play of their new single "Mercury" to the Zane Lowe Show on BBC's Radio One in the UK today. The new song is currently streaming on Radio One's website and can be heard now - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe

Speaking live on the show about the new song and the ongoing recording session for the band's third album, singer/guitarist Kele Okereke said, "We're in the middle of it. We're still writing and working on it, so it's quite hard to have an overview, really. We are making the record I always wanted us to make, so we just can't wait for it to be done."

"Mercury" will be released as a single in the UK on August 11th, with a US release date to follow.

Bloc Party will be back in the USA soon.

Man. I like this band, but that song is pretty awful.

Posted by CN | July 8, 2008 8:39 AM

this video blows more than the song

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 8:45 AM

love the band, the song and video do their fair share of sucking, and hard might i add....

Posted by julio | July 8, 2008 8:50 AM

sounds like The Faint

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 8:57 AM

::sigh::

Please just go back to trying to sound like Gang of Four. I could get into that. This? Not so much.

these guys are still playing?

If you want to portray Obama as a manchurian candidate at least play a better song.

Posted by HM | July 8, 2008 9:11 AM

"these guys are still playing?"

No, they got huge and then retired to make you happy.

(generic angry BV comment - everything's rubbish)

The single's not called 'Everyone's A Winner', is it?

"That was our kid taking the piss out of us! Our kid told someone it was going to be 'Everyone's A Winner', it's like, 'F***ing hell, mate, you might be, mate, but I'm not!'"

CommGuru in 2008.

As a graphic designer, I can say that this video is awful.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 10:26 AM

As a plumber I can say this video sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 10:38 AM

as a graphic designer that's about all you can do
get a real major and a real job

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 10:40 AM

hey blah wah blah whine crap hipster fuck this sucks.

Not great, not awful either. Can't imagine this would sound great live. Nice to see them being innovative though; you know, doing something a bit different rather than repackaging the success of their first album. If this were more consistent with their previous albums, I'm sure there'd be tons of haters crying about them continuing to copy Gang of Four. Oh wait, somebody managed to still complain about that.

Anyway . . . a side note:

Joy Division formed in 1976
Gang of Four formed in 1977
Echo & the Bunnymen formed in 1978

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 11:30 AM

as a gorilla, i can say that we as a specie, are wrongfully portrayed in this video....

Posted by Grape Ape | July 8, 2008 11:38 AM

I like it. Thankfully BP is not making music for hipster fucks.

I wish i liked this but it's terrible. Where are the bass and the guitars, things this band actually do well? I hope this record won't be all techno tracks. Russell's new side project Pin Me Down is so much better than this!

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 11:41 AM

this band has always, always sucked ass.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 11:55 AM

i went to the thing where that guy dj'd. it was horrible! lost the last bits of faith in them

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 12:36 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 1:56 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 2:23 PM

Great drumming by Tong as always.Fuck all of you.

Posted by hipster too cool | July 8, 2008 4:47 PM

I'm sorry its not death metal or whatever crap you listen too..hey look i can be ignorant and not care at all too!!!

Posted by I HATE HIPSTERS | July 8, 2008 11:47 PM

seriously. you either like this band or you wanted to be able to chide them for biting gang of four forever.

and this is a pretty terrible video, and I'm borderline sick of hearing british bands telling us how screwed we are in the states

that said, I really like this new single, and really appreciate that this band actually takes leaps of faith forward with each album

there's plenty of loser d-bags making GO4 parallels, just face the facts - they're our generation's the Cure

Posted by somebody that actually matters | July 9, 2008 2:59 AM

Did that just happen?

Posted by Rusty | July 9, 2008 5:00 AM

Absolutely the worst song this year if not the past decade!!! I'm absolutely serious! never believed that Bloc Party could put out something so repulsive. This song is one of the worst ever done.
