Awful times here.

Posted by Anus Burger | July 12, 2008 2:32 AM

wow - that dba show.

a barnburner if i ever did see.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 2:40 AM

wow, the late night show at DBA is the way a No Age show should be (maybe a little less hot)! The Seaport show was nothing compared to this. The crowd was absolutely insane from start to finish and the band was on point like whoah! Sick shit!

Posted by soakingwet | July 12, 2008 3:38 AM

the moshing men with dreadlocks were in effect. so perf.

Posted by CJ | July 12, 2008 4:33 AM

The 3 comments directly above are typical BV overhyped nonsense. I was at the DBA show tonite. It was real good but not insane by any means. It was way too hot in that bitch. No Age sounded good but the show at Market Hotel a while back was better than this.

"The crowd was absolutely insane from start to finish and the band was on point like whoah! Sick shit!"

This is the type of comment you get when you let a 16 year old who has not been to a lot of shows in his life into one like this.

this "A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole" is a real cunt. says a lot of inane, always negative shit. usually doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 8:57 AM

Who was the TBA act?

Awww the angry fuck from the Eddie Vedder thread is stalking my comments. Hah. Dude, take a laxative you piece of shit.

give it a rest AMNBA

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 9:32 AM

AMNBA wasn't at that DBA show.

Posted by Tito | July 12, 2008 9:40 AM

The Seaport show was fun but the drum sound was awful. Same problem happened at their last Bowery show. Time to find a new sound guy/gal?

the sound guy at the seaport looked like he was 15 years old

i for one enjoy the comments of A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole

I think A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole needs to get kicked in the teeth. Seriously. Just for that name alone.

If they hand out a "Biggest Douche" award at next year's Plug awards... this guy should definitely be considered.

Keep it up AMNBA! You have fans.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 10:19 AM

I had never seen them before and I thought the Seaport Show was amazing. I was totally blown away. And not to sound jerkish, but i'm no spring chicken. Maybe they can be better? Which seems sort of impossible. And yes, there was only a small percentage of the crowd going apeshit but that didn't take away from the band (and is to be expected at seaport). Fucking sick group, so cool and so good.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 11:00 AM

nothing out of the ordinary for a real fucking no age show you mean (not seaport or bowery nonsense).

i agree that the market hotel show was slightly better - but only b/c of the slightly larger space and more room to move. last night was still a perfect no age setting though.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 11:14 AM

The sound at South Street Seaport was indeed shitty however, there's no way to compare a show there by a band like No Age to a show they play at small, sweaty, intimate, in-yo-face joints like Death By Audio. It isn't even fair or realistic to expect the same kind of experience. No Age got their start at places like The Smell, DBA and sweaty loft shows. Through "alignment of the moon and stars" and the fact that they're capable of writing slightly more melodic tunes, they're getting very popular and have decided to break out of the loft/punk scene and play places like Bowery Ballroom and SSS. But that doesn't mean that either they or their "15 year old soundguy" are ready for it or that you're going to have the same indie diehard experience with bodies flailing all over each other at SSS when the band is several feet away from the closest audience member.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 11:25 AM

I actually think No Age has a fairly "big" sound considering it's just two of them. There's no reason why it couldn't work on a larger stage. Someone in their crew just needs to learn a few basic lessons about sound, especially in regard to the drums, which sounded horribly flat at the Seaport.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 11:39 AM

i thought their sound guy was Jake from Health, lol he looked just like him. omg Abe Vigoda was seriously adorable at the Seaport. 'we're professionals guys' it was funny because they all look about 14 years old.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 11:45 AM

Why can't people on this site actually enjoy shows?

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 12:47 PM

I didn't enjoy the seaport show mostly because of the way it sounded. The performance was good however, but they just need to work on getting a better live drum sound. Not a big deal. They sounded really far away, and quite muffled.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 12:55 PM

If you only comment about aspects of shows that are not important and have nothing to do with music, everyone who reads this thinks you only care about the sound, bouncers, and what ever people went to the show. You should be going to shows to listen to music.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 12:56 PM

well, 12:56... if you listen to No Age, or go to one of their shows, you'll realize there's a reason why the comments here are only about the crowd, the sound, etc.: No Age are no-talent hacks who cannot pen a decent song or melody, or express any real emotion with their music, or come up with interesting arrangements, etc. etc. They are pretty energetic though; so the only thing their fans can comment on is how "insane" the crowd was.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 1:19 PM

No Age is one of the more intelligent bands I've heard because they have an understanding of style (which is one of their overall themes to everything they do) and there is a profound amount of music that is comparable but sloppy and not well thought out. I think No Age's merchandise alone shows that they care more about what they're doing than most bands that are as popular as they've become. Concern and self awareness are cornerstones of artistry.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 1:25 PM

this show was special

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 1:53 PM

one of their "overall themes" is an "understanding of style"... and they put a lot of thought into their merchandise... uh huh...

what about the fuckin' SONGS?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 1:53 PM

@ anon 125: defending a band's reputation by based on their merch? i like my no age shirt, too, but come on!

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 2:00 PM

Good merchandise shows an acute sense of self awareness, which is probably one of the more admirable qualities associated with punk as a mass consciousness.

They named their album "Nouns", a facet of style. Liking their songs is more subjective but I think they are both trying to challenge a much younger crowd musically and maybe a good way to engage a sixteen year old through supplemental imagery is through merchandise. Kids seem to engage their imagination more and if you don't want to do that, you should probably find other places to drink then these sorts of shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 2:06 PM

i love the songs and the melodies personally.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 2:17 PM

am I alone in thinking no age really fucking suck?

This is the type of shit that will definitely not stand the test of time

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 3:18 PM

barking spiders played, then boogie board (?), then no age.

Posted by anonymous | July 12, 2008 5:01 PM

2:06 obviously isn't serious.

No Age kind of teeter in between having songs and being more "Free-form", but the problem is that they don't do either of those styles convincingly nor do they blend them that well. they're okay, there's plenty of worser shit out there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 5:59 PM

am i really crazy for thinking the sound at the seaport was totally fine? and everything else about that show was great. maybe it was because i was close. not sure what the hell people are talking about.
and getting into pissing contests about which small intimate show was better is pretty dumb. if the kids loved it last night then great. even if mkt hotel was "better", whatever the fuck that means, you don't need to make people feel bad about being amazed last night.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 8:54 PM

"2:06 obviously isn't serious."

you might be giving people too much credit...

"No Age kind of teeter in between having songs and being more "Free-form", but the problem is that they don't do either of those styles convincingly nor do they blend them that well."

nicely said.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2008 9:03 PM

I really hope Dave Longstreth and Mick Barr are the two dudes writing all the comments that are saying things like "am I alone in thinking no age really fucking suck?". Cause I mean, if you've got music thats better than those dudes and No Age, we should hang out.

When everyone transplants to New York, its because of all these punk rock dreams. None of the bands on "No New York" lasted more than five years. If you look at previous New York scenes, bands get monopolized on because it is a city of economics. I used to listen to the Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol when I was fourteen but when I actually moved here years later, I realized they played to huge crowds and their attempts to reconnect with the people who inspired them were thwarted by jealousy.

Why is there a mass consensus of all the people who have any public image or appearance of financial reciprocity in association with "punk" music in Brooklyn possibly be doing at any given moment somehow immediately become a part of "corporate America" or some phantom enemy? There is no pleasing everyone all the time. Use your head. Crass doesn't work because no one wants to be homeless for their art if they can avoid it. Poison doesn't work because there is no relevancy artistically. If your band is so hot, why don't you stop making excuses and start throwing shows?

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2008 5:11 PM

The nouns cd pamphlet features indie kids, neon colors, and T-SHIRTS. that's so punk man. seriously though, is there any meaning behind their music?? as far as i can tell the only point is to be stylish and trendy.. which is far from what punk and psychedelic music stands for no?

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 12:14 AM

It's droning and noisy so it's deep and artistic

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 12:15 AM

No Age take punk clichés and build something new out of them - by distilling the good riffs and the good changes to their simplest forms, then mixing it up with a lot of dissonant repetition. This requires a lot of musical restraint and a comfort zone in both punk music and avant noise.

It's good shit you can jump around to and sing along to, and it sounds totally novel to the ear.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 5:05 AM

you can't sing along to no age, what're you talking about?

uhhhh i have tried and am continuing to try really hard to like this band, but i'm not sure.

the record kind of sounds like your upstairs neighbor is listening to a good record, but all you can hear is some faint undefined semblance of that creeping through your ceiling.

but i'm still trying, maybe i'll come around. for those of you interested, leave me your phone numbers and i'll let you know how it goes. thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | July 14, 2008 10:43 AM

No Age is a good band because they're trying to prove how being conscientious helps you achieve.

Does anyone want to talk about Greg Ginn and Black Flag and do it yourself ethics? Maybe people on this board don't know them specifically.

If you want to set up a show, you need bands, people, a PA, a place to do it, people to staff it (to keep the cops away), and nothing else. Its not as easy as that specifically, but before anyone goes and complains about how they can throw shows better, why doesn't some one on this board? This message board about local music? Why doesn't SOME ONE try to throw better shows than the people posting on this message board?
