Ratatat @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, NYC - pics
photos by Ryan Muir

The dangerous duo that is Ratatat came on 3 hours after doors opened, and were joined by a third, a keyboardist, who was rocking a serious 'fro and flared jeans, which I hadn't seen in a minute. In true party boy form, Stroud, the lead guitarist, crept onstage with 2 beers and a bottle of Jameson in tow. They played a good mix of tracks, mainly from their newest, more ecletic, album LP3, which dropped last week, and of course, a bunch of tracks from Classics, the house party soundtrack of 2006. As per usual, they projected generally weird stuff in the background (including clips from the "You Can Call Me Al" music video by Paul Simon and digitally-altered '70's reel) and used lighting to project their silhouettes onscreen. To top off the '70s-tinged vibe, there were even a few unexpected bongo solos. [BUST]Their next NYC show is at Terminal 5. More info on that and other tour dates HERE. It was my first time seeing ratatat and i thought they were really good. but did anyone else think the keyboardist screwed up a lot? the guitarist is awesome and that's what made it great.
if they skipped all the samples they use and instead played everything live (and obviously added a drummer and maybe an additional backup guitarist), this band would be amazing live.

Totally agree w/ 2:13.
If Ratatat filled out to play fully live, and not sampled, this band could have an epic live show (like Battles). but since so much of it is canned, the performance gets stale, even with new songs. I'd seen them twice before the Music Hall Show, and while i still dug it was hoping they'd added more since their "self-titled" tour.
Also, they keyboard guy did screw up quite a bit.

Great, great photos. Kudos Ryan.

But did they kill it? I heard they killed last time they were in NYC. I love it when bands kill. Kill.

i think the lack of a full band is mostly a money thing.
However, as is the case with Santogold, it would add SO much to the live performance.

those pictures suck, great show though

they did kill it, despite the keyboardist.
he was more into his dance moves which were a bit exhaustive.

i'm sure money has a lot -- if not all, to do with it, but a full band would just bring the live shows to such a new level. also, if the screwups of that keyboardist are typical, they should find someone else. he really couldn't even come close to keeping up with the guitarist.
all in all, it was a really good, fun show. the video of you can call me all was hilarious.

do they need a full band? they were rad last night.

that keyboardist is a douchebag, he was spilling drinks everywhere, telling his friends he was "gonna fuck that blonde chick", and almost kicked down the door to the music hall (after he had exited) and then yelled at the bodyguard who let him back in. they should find a keyboardist that can hold his liquor.

awesome pics! they looked like a heavy rock band, but played sweeeeet electro.

uhhhhhhhm keyboards aside
i have to say that show was one of the most awesome things i have seen, like better than a live birth or atoms colliding. and it sounded fucking loud and awesome.

I'd have to agree w/ the posters who say a live band would make things more spontaneous and powerful.
The pre-recorded drum tracks basically run the show and ensure that you're going to get the same performance of each song. you never felt the intensity the songs required because of the 'canned' nature of using too many samples. Also, ending live songs with a fade-out? Give the songs a proper ending.
Also, the guitarist (on the albums) plays multi-tracked guitar, so when he plays live he's playing along to so many samples, he barely has to do anything. I noticed when the bass player/keys player dropped out, it didn't affect the overall sound much (a bad sign that you're relying too much on samples)
But, I'd still say it was good set, the performance was fun. In all, the show was highly satisfactory. The crowd definitely loved it and gave a great energy, the band obviously appreciated the response.

Besides perhaps being too intoxicated the keyboard player was also too high in the mix... way too loud. And maybe it was where I was standing (stage right under the balcony) but I would have loved for the bass to be a little higher. There is something nasty about the bass shaking your sternum.
Good show, agree with the full band sentiment considering a live drummer can also incorporate samples as well... best of both worlds really.

I surprised no one commented on how short the set was. The setlist was longer. They just pulled the plug for some reason. I was front row last night but I don't think the energy in the building was anything close to their Webster Hall Show last year. They were definitely worth seeing but when you have 3 full length albums worth of material you have to play more than an hour and ten minutes.

I know the keyboardist, his name is Martin Bonaventre and he's a total douchebag, especially in every band he has ever played in. Why Ratatat chose him to play with them in beyond me, fuck you Martin.

Ratatat sucks
No seriously, they're awesome.
All kidding aside, they fucking suck.

Who is that on the screen in back? What movie is that from?

yea show was sick, i danced hard the whole time. i appreciated this douchbag Martins enthusiasm, i thought his fro was gonna come off, but he did fuck up and it ssounds like hes a dick. The only thing I thought after they ended with a 2 or 3 song encore was why they didnt play longer. Like someone said with that much music they could have at least given us an hour and a half. How long are their usual sets?
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:11 PM
Mirando has clips from Predator with Arnold in it. Oh yea anyone have an idea of what the set list was? just curious.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:16 PM
They played their entire set -- it's just a short set.
You can't "just play more songs" when you've got your backbeats preprogrammed in a certain order synced to video in advance. That's just the nature of the show.
Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2008 1:14 PM
someone above said they cut it short. Even if they didnt they should have a longer set. Im thinking of seeing them again in sept. in boston, but if its gonna be the same short set i'm not gonna.

Kids like you are the reason why live music has become such a fucking lame institute in my view. Your picture happy arm got in my face, next time I,m bringing iron maidens to the show and I will slash every fucking flickr happy hispter who would rather spend time taking 12 ugly and useless shots of a guitarist rather than listen and react to the show. Yout generation sucks.
