South Street Seaport - Mary Weiss early tonight, No Age pics
Mary Weiss & the Shangri-Las (1960's)

Mary Weiss & the Yo La-Tengos (2000's)

River to River wants you to know:
The Seaport Music show featuring Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las with Nouvellas and The Lost Crusaders tomorrow, July 18, will start a touch earlier (6:30pm) than originally planned to make sure that we can fit all this musical goodness in. Thanks for understanding! That show is today and is free. Last week's free show at the Seaport featured Abe Vigoda, Telepathe and finally No Age. Finally the No Age pics, below..."Mary was fifteen years old when she and her sister Elizabeth (Betty) began singing with identical twins Margie and Mary Ann Ganser in their neighborhood of Queens, NY. They soon shot into the charts with massive hits including Remember (Walking In The Sand), Leader Of The Pack, and Give Him A Great Big Kiss. Mary put out a new album recently and has been tearing it up ever since."

what was the average age at the seaport show? 15?
Posted by butternuts | July 18, 2008 4:26 PM
um, wasn't the jailbait comment about The Shangri-Las 1965 photo? I believe that's why the term VINTAGE jailbait was used. wasn't Mary like 16 in that shot?

Boy not only cleavage girl but the girl in the picture 7 from the bottom who looks like she just came. I would love to shower(or more to the point spray) them both with love.

dude -- it's one and the same girl...
Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 7:32 PM
this is predictably getting more and more disturbing. hipsters are underfed and oversexed.
Posted by cleavage girl | July 18, 2008 9:29 PM
what's wrong with being oversexy?
Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 9:39 PM
pic 7 from the bottom (same pic where cleavage girl gets off): dude on the right's expression is priceless. more blank than dirk diggler on downers.
Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 9:47 PM
how was mary weiss's show?
Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 9:52 PM
the "hipsters" stayed away from the seaport tonight. It was empty. I guess the lineup was not hot enough for them.
Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2008 11:11 PM
well, the lineup was hot enough for me, but so was the weather, which is why i stayed home.
so, how was it?

I really don't understand why this had to start at 6:30. The sets were all short anyway. I could not get there by 6:30 and missed first band and night was over by 9PM.

It was a good night. Missed the first band, but I enjoyed the Nouvellas and thought their 2 singers were really excellent, and a really rocking band. As for Mary Weiss, I thought she started a bit shakey but once she warmed up, she was excellent. But the Nouvellas only played about 1/2 an hour - and Mary Weiss was an hour. Mary did quite a few Shangri-la songs and sang Leader of the Pack during the encore. She introduced her backing band whic inclued members of the Smithereens, and Roxy Music.

I asked about the start and end times at the Seaport shows and was told that it's because they have to end at 9 p.m. because of "noise" complaints from the people who live in the towers up Fulton street & on Water...really sucks, cuz I remember watching Ted Leo keep playing well after 10 a couple years ago. You'd think an hour more would kill the people who live down there...I agree w/ 11:55 that Mary found her groove and did a nice set. I saw her sitting at table signing autographs after the show -- very cool of her.

It is ridulous that the seaport is caving in to those complaining neighbors. Central Park neighbors complain all the time and even they allow the shows to end by 10.
Like those neighbors are really sleeping anyway at that time. Why don't they just use their air conditioner for 1 hour?

i live on fulton street, two blocks from the seaport. it's noisy pretty much all the time.
