Spoon @ Prospect Park

Britt Daniel, frontman for Spoon, is a noted Feist fan.

"First time I saw her, we got thrown on a bill, I'd never heard her," he says. "She came on and I thought 'Who is this person?' She blew me away. In terms of a charisma and connecting with the audience, I rank her up there with Prince. Plus, she has one of the great, intriguing voices of today." [Chicago Tribune]

Feist played a pay-show at the Prospect Park Bandshell last week. Jay Reatard, White Rabbits and Spoon played the one that happened last night (July 15, 2008). More pictures from that below...

does chris laputt know the difference between the jay reatard and his bass player? it does not seem so.

As Britt Daniel began to shit his pants to “Don’t You Evah” this clusterfuck and her boyfriend pushed up to the front shifting the whole crowd. I didn’t expect this kind of rowdiness at a Spoon show so I quickly and politely shouted “WHAT THE FUCK?”. The bitch apologized and I accepted it as I thought she would just shut up and drink her beer.

She didn’t. In fact, she hadn’t heard of the recently-but-not-too-recently invented Personal Space. So when her bag was penetrating my asshole and her earrings were hitting the back of my head while she was stupidly making out with her boyfriend like a drunk donkey, I nudged her back, signaling “Fuck off, you worthless sack of shit.” She took this offensively and weakly pushed me against the barrier.

It didn’t stop. She repeatedly kept raping my back and ass with herself and her bag. She was pissed off that I was pissed off. I attempted to stomp on her feet and kick her legs but it was a failure. Repeatedly calling her names did not work either and made me look like a gaping vagina with Tourette’s.

She then began to squeeze my ass repeatedly. At first I ignored it, but on the second squeeze I turned around and called her a cunt. She ran away, but soon came back as I felt another squeeze. Furious, I turned around and said “Do that again, and my shoe will be in your asshole, similar to your bag in mine.” She moved back and someone who knew about Personal Space took her place. From then on it was enjoyable.

i'm not here to complain about feist at all, but i think this is the only time in the history of ever that she will be put in the same category of prince.

Posted by robert doosh | July 16, 2008 1:41 AM

regarding the personal space comment, i think that when these annoying bitches and sluts at concerts bring their massive purses and tote bags and what not and constantly bang it against you, or do some other annoying thing like constantly shriek when there's really nothing to be shrieking about at the moment, you should just grab their tits or ass or whatever. that should make them move to another spot. or you could just spit on them.

only problem is that you risk getting your ass kicked if they happen to have one of their jarhead guy friends with them.

but if you can safely determine that there is no ogre guy friend around, copping a feel is a win-win situation- they move away from you and quit annoying the fuck out of you, and if they don't, at least you get to enjoy groping them, if they're hot of course.

having said this, i've never actually tried this.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:02 AM

feist has a thin voice live, so unimpressive, that she herself has sing over it as it loops in her shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:02 AM

Hey 1:40,

Was the bag pushing the broomstick further in?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:04 AM

Hey 2:02,

We already assumed that you've never felt up a girl before about 12 words into your post.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:08 AM

Spoon were great. I was pretty stoked to hear that paul simon cover they did on daytrotter recently and the stones cover was pretty awesome too.

Go back into the studio and write another amazing record!

Posted by Josh | July 16, 2008 2:14 AM

2:04,

Actually, it was the upper part of a pogo stick, and that was pushed all the way in earlier last week by Jim Carrey.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:22 AM

@12:50 - Jay was being annoying having his face covered in hair when singing. His bassist, on the other hand, didn't have this problem.

Posted by Chris | July 16, 2008 6:53 AM

there sure was a lot of hostility there for a spoon show.

Posted by wembley | July 16, 2008 6:54 AM

those girls with the huge fucking purses
are everywhere and are the rudest.
they think they can get away with anything
because mostly people let them because they're girls.
you know if your bag is going to take up two seats
on the subway it should have it's own metro card.
they charge for extra baggage on planes don't they?
and just because they think their hair is sexy
doesn't mean i don't mind having it all over me
while they play with it and flip it around
I'm sure it's clean and all and their boyfriends think it's
sexy, but you know.............................

Where did the White Rabbits get their impeccable fashion sense? A Connecticut golf club during the Reagan years?

Posted by JWeir | July 16, 2008 7:35 AM

don't have a set list, but here are some of the ones I remembered them playing:

don't you evah
cherry bomb

don't make me a target
underdog
beast and dragon adored
monsieur valentine
turn my camera on
mathematical mind
delicate place
small stakes (set closer)
some paul simon cover

they also had some horns playing on lots of songs, but since I was outside the fence they were a bit hard to hear at times. worked amazingly well for rocks off, though.

Posted by jason | July 16, 2008 8:11 AM

what time did Spoon go on? What time did the show end?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 8:18 AM

Show ended at like 10:30 I think, Spoon went on at around 9pm. Opening acts were pretty boring.

Posted by michaelways | July 16, 2008 8:38 AM

how is security at these shows? haven't been, but plan to bring booze and maybe reefer in the future. is it cool?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 8:52 AM

Inconspicuous plastic bottles, flasks in zipper compartments. You'll be fine.

Posted by michaelways | July 16, 2008 9:08 AM

is David Spade in a band now?

also, to 2:10am, who uses the phrase "felt up a girl" anymore? are you in 8th grade? i bet you also still use the terms "2nd base" and "3rd base."

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:27 AM

these pictures are cool and all but... where's spoon? all i see is some dude. you know, the band's pretty good!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:27 AM

wtf is "rocks off"? i'm a pretty avid spoon fan and have never heard of this song.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:36 AM

"Rocks Off" by Rolling Stones (Exile on Main Street). Spoon played a great cover.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:40 AM

i agree with the purse comments that's why i use a rolly-bag

it's great

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:42 AM

spoon was great!Jay retard's bass player looks like Murderface... I kind of like Jason Special Education a little better. Seems a liittle more of and flows nicely.

Fun show. I had my snarky defenses up at first, but the immediate audience around me was great. Poor guy with the bag up his butt. Chicks are rough sometimes

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:43 AM

i am someone who has never really listened to spoon and saw them on a whim. damn. they fucking killed it. they were great. i was really not expecting them to be as good live as they were.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 9:43 AM

This was my 4th Spoon show in the last 5 or 6 years and I must say it was amazing. The Webster Hall show just before NYE a few years back was about this good. The Terminal 5 show recently was pretty going through the motions, although they did play 'I Summon You' that night. Overall, the bandshell worked for them, and I didn't think it would. It was also pretty crowded! I'm not sure why everyone is in love with the JR opening act -- I came away with nothing. The White Rabbits had a few decent numbers rhythmically but it just reminded me of a golfer's Rusted Root -- way too McFly, those outfits were.

Posted by greg | July 16, 2008 9:46 AM

ahh, of course.. i didn't even think it could've been a Stones cover. goddamn. i love them.

You are right, how dare Jay Reatard cover his face when you had pictures to take. What an asshole. I'm sure if you had informed him that quality photos were needed for a music blog website he would have brushed those golden locks to the side. What is this world coming to when musicians don't take into account the blogging community when making their on stage fashion decisions.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:21 AM

These shitty anti-female comments are shocking.

The misogyny on BV is rampant...makes me wonder if it's just a couple of crazy people or if a lot of the guys I see at shows around the city are seething with hatred for women.

Chris, great shots - I like that you're one of the few photographers who uses b&w.

Posted by lori | July 16, 2008 10:21 AM

it's meta irony, darling.

while it's not actually very funny, it isn't actually offensive either.

relax.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:24 AM

The show was really fun. I was impressed by all the lights and effects they used through out the show. Back where I was sitting, had a nice view and plenty of "personal space". Only complaint is they didn't play "I Summon You" or anything acoustic(brought it out for like two songs). I heard other people complain that they didn't play enough of their old stuff.

Also I noticed that the crowd was a bit older...saw a bunch of bald heads and dads with their sons.

Oh and prospect park is amazing. Security is a joke. I walked in with two fifths of rum in my bag and I smoked trees through out the show. Didn't see any security guards prowling.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:27 AM

i don't think most guys are "seeting with hatred for women," but the self-absorbed, dumb, annoying chick is pervasive in these parts. male hipster douchebags take just as much abuse on this blog, i think.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:28 AM

Some meatheads and drunk coozes were hassling a couple of junior high kids in the front row. After the first or second song, Britt called them out and told them to fucking chill. Eventually the cooz smoked a jay and settled down. During the encore, one of the meatheads tried to start a fight with the kid and got thrown out.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:31 AM

spoon is amazing studio band, and britt daniel is a songwriter for the ages. but live, the band is lacking. they are simply too measured, and won't take it to the next level and really rock out. last night's prospect park show was very similar to the other spoon shows i've seen (june '05 webster hall, dec. '06 webster hall, others) .. proficient, but not inspiring.

plus, the crowd was dead, and the sound was muddy .. i could hardly hear the vocals, and the horns were waaaay too low.

and it was hilarious when they played 'rocks off' and the indie kiddies had no idea what it was ...

i was really surprised by how they played these really cool soundscapes and little jams between some songs. and amen to the person who said it was a great venue....much better than summerstage or mccaren. the stage is at the perfect height...everyone can see yet it is still low enough to be intimate. security was a non factor also. we smoked a blunt during the set no problem. the only cops i saw were like hitting on girls and stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 10:41 AM

Meta irony? Fucking please. The writers of these posts have no grasp of those concepts. It's shitty, unintelligent drivel that sounds like it comes from a very honest place in some messed up peoples' heads.

I've never seen any similar sexist comments about men on this blog, give me some links, please.

Calling women bitches and sluts and suggesting that men "grab their tits and asses" is not only offensive, it's scary. The only person who could write that and think it's funny would be someone who meant it on some level, and assumed that there were male readers who would identify with their sentiments as well.

Posted by drewo | July 16, 2008 11:01 AM

lori,

relax a little.

your posts are scaring me a lot more than the "sexist" posts. they were joking around. you're just fucking nuts! check out this website - www.now.org. it think you'll like it better.

it's an anonymous internet blog site. who takes any of this seriously.

let's stop blaming media and hollywood, etc for all the bad things going on in society. let individuals take responsibility for their own actions. if some jackass reads that post and as a result decides to grope an annoying woman at a concert, do you really think that if he hadn't read the post, he wouldn't eventually have done something like that or equally as "bad" as that anyway?

now get back to work, everyone.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:01 AM

lori,

just to let you know, i have a deep respect and appreciation for both bitches AND sluts.

Posted by Andrew WK | July 16, 2008 11:05 AM

The reason we ladies carry big bags is to shove them into your teensy-weensy gumdrop penises and single, not-too-hairy, droopy ball. You see, fuckfaces- they provide the personal space so oft lacking at concerts such as this one, full of red-faced, sweaty beer-gut pregnancy loser turds who think they have the right to stomp on women because they're so busy playing make pretend that they're the lead singer of Spoon. But since they went into finance like Daddy told them, they don't get be a big boy who actually gets up on stage and plays music for a living. So, they make up for it by posting hateful, sexist things about ladies and/or the dreaded hipsters anonymously on a blog.

Oh, we also use huge bags to prevent obnoxious teenage girls from shoving too close to us on the subway. Natch.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:12 AM

i'm pretty sure that comment about groping is just stupid, not serious. juvenile fantasy from a person who has zero experience with female anatomy. and there is plenty of stupid to go around on both sides of the gender divide, and i've noticed it comes out in a very high concentration on blog comments, so take it with a grain of salt.
steve albini once remarked that there is no such thing as a girl who likes good music. i don't think it's a sexist comment necessarily, nor do i think it's true all of the time, but it's an interesting ovservation. now, many of the people you'll run into at a spoon show in prospect park have no idea about music, granted, but it's easy to see where the stereotype comes from if you go to shows at mccarren park, where many of the women are there for the purpose of being seen, even stared at, but it's also abundantly clear that most of the dudes in attendance are just as clueless.
so, from my point of view, it's ok to make fun of stereotypes. i accept the fact that most guys are relentlessly sexist, but feminism is dead and women have mostly themselves to blame for it. self respecting, intelligent people know better, but i'll grant it is discouraging how many morons are out there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:14 AM

BV - could you pull the comments with the vulgar and crass references towards women? This is about music not for venting personal issues with strangers.

hypocrit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:25 AM

it's not censorship. it's having the decency and intelligence to think of a better word B, S or C for a female. the more you say it the more it makes it ok for people to use it and that's not right.

Posted by yk | July 16, 2008 11:31 AM

to 11:12-

I know what you mean about the stereotypical post-college ex-frat boy douche bag that works in finance and frequents outdoor concerts with his popped collar, but there's also the pretentious douchey indie band williamsburg hipster (who you seem to respect) who joins a band without any musical experience and then acts as if he's an "artist."

these two types have a lot in common. one could argue that they both are narcissistic.

and what's with the teenage girl-bashing?

Posted by ot | July 16, 2008 11:38 AM

^I didnt make the orginal statement, but I feel that if you go to enough shows in your life, you start to be able to pick up on who you can just talk to and who needs a "What the fuck?" in their direction.

just sayin'

women are apparently incapable of narcissism, sez 11:34

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 11:42 AM

I don't get it.

As immature as that post about "bitches and sluts" was, how was it mysogynist?

The writer did not say "all females are bitches and sluts."

He (assuming it was a he) was write about particular females who happen to be "bitches and sluts" and who at the same time happen to be annoying.

Just as easily, someone could write about all those "cocks and assholes." No one would think that that's anti-male.

I haven't been to the Bandshell for a long time. 10 years ago we lived across the street on PPW, went to many, many performances. I was back bringing my 13 year old son to his first real rock show. I figured Celebrate Brooklyn would be a good venue. Perhaps we should have picked a spot further back. I had to bring my son home smelling of pot and beer. I wasn't expecting so much of each to be litterally showered on us. We got there early and sat up front, center. By the time Spoon came on a lot of people crowded up front, then the group of drunk 20ish women right in front of us decided to pull out a huge joint and the smoke came right back in our faces. Not cool. Its not a club where everybody gets carded. I gave them some crap and they thought I was from Mars to not want pot smoke in my face, but parenting makes you see things differently. By the end, there were two teenage girls pushed impossibly close right in front of us, dancing vigorously. My son looked uncomfortable, I told him he might get some sex to go with the drugs and rock&roll.

Despite the space-invaders, pot smoke, concrete comfort and the cup of beer that got thrown in the air over a bunch of us, it was fantastic to see my son singling along and clapping time. Spoon was great.

Thanks for the photos!

Ban alchohol from outdoors events. Ban assholes from attending such events. Oh, yeah, and book good bands to such events. Too much to ask?

Posted by WTF | July 16, 2008 12:09 PM

I see some more women came forward. I'd like to see more of that. On every post.

For people saying "it's just a joke, it's just a message board" - do you laugh at peoples' racist jokes? I don't. I object. And yeah, people say "Oh, lighten up". All the stupid jokes add up and create an atmosphere that encourages even more stupidity. Why not work to minimize it?

Posted by lori | July 16, 2008 12:14 PM

A debate on whether misogyny exists or not or is rampant or not is pretty frivolous. Basically, people who are dicks are more vocal, and dicks probably have no qualms saying fucked up shit about women and pretend like they're some wife-beating big dicks when they're probably trust-fund babies living in their parent's house. Ladies, rest assured, there are level-headed gentlemen among us who don't necessarily feel the need to post comments talking about how much we love and respect women in the face of these dipshits.

Missed Jay Reatard, but heard he was very agitated at the crowd (understandable), changed the lyrics in 'Always Wanting More' to 'you're such a fucking bore' as he pointed at the crowd.

White Rabbits was better than expected, two drummers actually worked nicely and people tried to dance before the vibe got suffocated by the Stand Still crowd. The bassist refused to look like anything but a frustrated Max Fischer asshole wondering why he was there and couldn't wait to get off the stage. The guy on piano had amazing stage presence and seemed to be the best musician by far.

Spoon was great and Britt was really enthusiastic and into the guitar work. The set list was weirdly arranged (where is my Kill The Moonlight) and the first seven or so songs were exclusively from their last three albums. What.

It's obvious that Spoon is just Britt's backing band. Not to hate, but they don't seem to be as talented or have the same stage presence. (Britt and the Spoons, anyone? No? Thought it was awesome.)

Highlight was high school jew-fro kid going out of his way to jump the barricade and go complain to security about some frat boy pushing him during Britt's solo encore. After about two minutes, security finally gets there and listens to frat boy and his friends whine and complain. Guess who gets escorted off? Jew-fro and his date. Priceless.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:16 PM

I think it's a little bit ironic that my 11 year old brother was the only one out of all the people around me to recognize "Rocks Off".

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:17 PM

the show looks like a horrible nightmare.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:22 PM

what was the paul simon cover?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:24 PM

12:16 - I was right by that kid. Too bad he got escorted out, but it probably was best for him. The meatheads would have ended up attacking him afterwards, no doubt. Not to worry - meatheads always get their due in life: good jobs, fast cars, hot wives, long lives. Life ain't fair - get used to it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:30 PM

I agree with Eli - show AND crowd was lacking. Saw them play Roseland last year on a Saturday night, which was much better. I know they're limited at the Bandshell in terms of how loud they can turn the amps up, but the lack of volume (esp for the horns, who are a welcome group) along with Spoon pretty much coasting the first hour left me with a pretty apathetic taste in my mouth.

When will some of you learn. There is no such thing as personal space at a concert. There is no such thing as this is your spot. You secure your spot with whatever you have or you lose it. If you dont like being crowded then move to the back. This nonsense of I got there early so this is mine is ridiculous. I love seeing that attitude as i push and shove you out of the way to get up close.

Too fucking bad. The meek shall not inherit the earth. Sorry.

In response to the nasty comments about women on here. Please, these are turds who would not have the balls to say anything like that to a girl's face. They say it on here to act tough but most of them are losers who have probably only seen a vagina in a porn magazine.

Lori, there is so much I could say about you but suffice to say you are a fucking imbecile.

Oh and to Eli and the others who are making fun of people who did not know the Stones song "Rocks Off", give it a rest. You probably did not know it either until you came on here and saw it listed.

re: 12:30 -

i agree about the meatheads. they were the guys that were assholes in highschool but that everyone said would end up being losers later in life.

however, i find that many of them, "losers" or not, end up making a lot of money and banging tons of hot chicks even later in life. not that that's so important, but let's face it, we all want money and pussy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 12:55 PM

hehehe I am a fucking imbecile, eh :) Come and say that to my face at the next show you see me at. I'm a photographer, usually shooting the show, with long red hair.

A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole,

It's called overexaggeristic sarcasm. People get way too serious in response.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:20 PM

i wasn't making fun of people who didn't know 'rocks off' .. i was just pointing it out, noting it as an 'ah-ha' moment for 40-ish rock fans such as myself who grew up on the stones and led zep and classic rock radio in general, then graduated to (for lack of a better word) "indie" music when corporate interests destroyed mainstream rock. i've been attending indie shows for years now, and last night it became crystal clear to me that i am of a different generation than jay reatard fans. i guess there's no reason a 22-year old, whose touchstones are dan deacon (heaven help us) and matt & kim and, yes, jay reatard, to know who the rolling stones are. it's the same as me not knowing who sly stone or alex chilton was when i attended my first r.e.m. show back in '84. it's interesting, is all.

but i guess brooklynvegan posters would rather make jokes about poo, call women awful names and pick fights than have a thoughtful discussion about music. a shame ...

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:23 PM

Lori, yes you are an imbecile and sure i will have no problem saying that to you if i see you at a show. I am sure it wont be the first time someone has called you that. Oh and your photos are crap.

Wembley, dude you are stalking me through threads. Relax you piece of shit. Spend less time stalking me and more time trying to gain some semblance of a life.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 1:24 PM

i'm on lori's side, i see no reason to call her names, but let's face it, the original complaint here was obviously made by a complete loser. seriously, if you don't like it, don't try to get up front, or shove back. pussy.

hey Lori,

do you have a website or anything, with your photos?

thanks

LORI FOR VICE-PRESIDENT!!!

Lori's a facist. "Join the PC movement or die". Where is the liberty, the freedom of choice? No, not here, ma'am ... I'll laugh at what I please, and won't be strong armed by some meathead at a show, or some PC idiot trying to control my life because they feel their own lives out of control.

Put that in you bong and smoke it!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:33 PM

I already know my photos are crap, but at least the other person who said that mentioned that I'm really nice.

I've never been called an imbecile to my face! Seriously, come up and insult me, it will cheer me up. I'll be at Siren Fest. Actually, grab my ass. That would be much more appropriate.

a manhattan not brooklyn asshole posts the craziest asinine shit every time he appears.

maybe it's supposed to be a silly character? I can't imagine anyone could post such ass-y shit and expect to be taken seriously at all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:34 PM

Yes...A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole's pride and joy is obviously to bait and get people riled up. Don't let it work on you if you don't dig it.

Posted by blackhat | July 16, 2008 1:38 PM

Anon 1:23--

I think it is pretty reasonable to expect your average concert-goer to know rock touchtones like "Rocks Off". I mean... even not knowing Alex Chilton or Sly in '84 isn't as bad as that. That's sort of like these kids today not knowing Elliott Smith (or maybe I'm just saying that because he covered Big Star a lot)...

But it certainly is sad to see these comments just deteriorate into a bunch of trash talking and "I know more than you do..."

Maybe if we were little positive (and I'm guilty myself of being a jerk to people... just see above comments about what's his face)... we would be able to get the children of Dan Deacon to realize that there's LOTS of great stuff out there that was recorded before 2007. Maybe there's even stuff worth listening to that has never gotten a post on this blog!!

Posted by wembley | July 16, 2008 1:39 PM

sounds like a horrible show but sorry to say it's almost par for the course when it comes to outdoor shows.
saw Spoon last yr at their rain shortened freebie,
pulled a pretty good tape of them, too. I think the rain held people back because there were plenty personal space.

Posted by khumfindmie | July 16, 2008 1:45 PM

dan deacon, matt and kim, jay reatard.. it's all trash. i can't wrap my head around this phenomenon, and how it intersects with the good music that's represented here. it doesn't make sense to me at all; i often find out about good shows on this blog, but christ there's a lot of garbage diluting it all. this whole hipster thing is so worn, when will it end?
fennesz and sakamoto were great last night, narry a hipster in sight, nor meatheads. no happy, infectious energy, just somber, textural ambience. it was wonderful.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:53 PM

when did "hipster" come to mean art / music / people that the person using the word doesn't like

let me tell you something. if you are reading a website called Brooklyn Vegan... If you attend small scale obscure rock shows... If you have chosen to move to NYC from elsewhere to pursue a creative career... If you know who anyone mentioned on this site is, at all....

YOU YOURSELF ARE A HIPSTER

get over it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:55 PM

Wished I was at Fennesz and Sakamoto instead of having to hear some drunk twat yell "FREE BIRD" into my ear half the night. Really?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 1:56 PM

Lori, no problem. I think i will be at Siren so i will look for you and i would be happy to call you an imbecile and grab your ass. Make sure not to wear underwear.

Anon 1:34, who cares if you or anyone else takes my comments seriously? And what i say might be "ass-y" but it is always the truth. Deal with it.

Anon 1:38, actually that is not my pride and joy but nice attempt at psych 101. I will admit though it is funny and truly amazing sometimes to see losers like wembley get his knickers all in a bunch from comments on a blog.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 1:58 PM

Hipsters have been around since the beginning of time. Also known as poseurs, empty suits, and liberals. All comes down to style over substance. Truly creative folks don't waste their time writing on such blogs nor care about what other people think.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:01 PM

AMNBH is a bully, paint it however you want. I just hope he doesnt take my lunch money for saying that.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:01 PM

2:01. amnba has convinced himself that he's a provocateur, a rabble rouser. every time you complain about him, he thinks he's winning.

truth is, he's a sad lonely dude in a cubicle somewhere who probably couldn't carry a conversation with a real human being.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:07 PM

2:01. you are writing on a blog

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:08 PM

@Anon2:01 Thus you have confirmed by your own train of thought that you yourself are not "truly creative" as you've just written on such a blog.

Posted by blackhat | July 16, 2008 2:11 PM

Anon 2:01 oh cmon man, I am not a bully. Just sometimes a change from the majority of people on here who are weasly whining losers. Such as good ol wembly who as now resorted to posting as Anon 2:07 so he does not look like to much of a stalker. It is so transparent.

But you have to love these amateur psychologists. They watch a few episodes of Dr. Phil and suddenly they believe they can analyze anyone. What a joke.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:14 PM

I don't think he claimed to be a truly creative type.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:14 PM

shit. I'm starting to feel a little like I've come out of the gate too hard and made myself into some frothing buffoon again. This is just like junior high.

look guys, I'm just trying to make people laugh. The truth is, I just want you all to like me. Seems like today, more and more, it takes just a little more edge to get people going. I just want to part of the gang.

Can you forgive me for coming on so strong? Really I just love music and going to shows and it's hard to find common ground. Sometimes I feel really alone and I act out by saying things I wouldn't want said to me.

I'm a little ashamed of myself, but you should all know:

I love you.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:17 PM

wow you are a big fucking jerk amnba! anyone who goes to shows regularly knows who lori is and knows what a nice person she is, one of the nicest people you will ever meet.

you are a jerk, and the reason why people on here who might be perfectly reasonable people have to post anonymously, to avoid stalker jerks like you.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2008 2:23 PM

don't believe that fake post by someone who claims to be me. That's fucked! It is not cool to pretend to be me.

You little whining liberal faggots. You don't fucking deserve my posts.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:25 PM

Ahahahahahha,

well first of all it does not need to be stated but obviously the post attributed to me at 2:17 was not by me nor was the one right above me at 2:25. I would never attack liberals being that i am one.

I do truly love the respect and honor some of you losers have given me that you feel so enraged as to try and post as me. You show yourself more than i ever could just how pathetic you really are.
Keep up the good work.

As for Anon 2:23 I never said Lori was nice or not nice. I simply stated she was an imbecile and that was based on her comments on here. Note that i was not the only one saying that. I have met some of the sweetest people in my life who also happened to be imbeciles. But calling me a stalker? Who am i stalking you piece of shit? Replying to someones comments is not stalking, dummy.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:30 PM

what the fuck? who is posting all these comments in my name?

2:30 sounded pretty close. Bravo! I don't even understand what the joke is.

But nice try trying to "psych" me out. You all think you're got my head figured out, but nice try. Nice psychology, where's the armchair?

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:35 PM

It's bad enough we've got one AMNBA. PLEASE people...do not create several more in an attempt to "psych out" whoever this person is.

Posted by blackhat | July 16, 2008 2:40 PM

Seriously! Stop trying to psych me out and stop stalking me you imbeciles!

Oops... three o' clock... time to fellate myself.

I'll be back soon... as I obviously have nothing better to do.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:47 PM

Ahahahaha blackhat, they could never psych me out. The syntax and way i write is pretty exclusive. These losers who could not even begin to copy that. Especially when they type things like this "You all think you're got my head figured out" They obviously meant to say YOU'VE" but in their rage they messed it up and did not check it. Again it is so transparent but i love it. Keep it coming. More More tributes.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 16, 2008 2:48 PM

Please more tributes. It has the lovely joy of both making me laugh and show you to be the fucking losers that you are. When you are trying to figure out why you have no life look to this as one of the reasons. I may be an asshole, jerk etc but at least i am original. You have to stoop to try to comment as me. I might be lame but I could never sink that low. Keep it coming.

11:52? I was 11:49, talked about my son so maybe you're talking to me. No, my son is not. All thing in good time. I figured there would be pot smoke at the show, just not a huge cloud right in his face. That sucks. It's fine that he was exposed to that sort of thing, it's going to be everywhere in High School. I just wish the introduction was a little less 'in your face'.

Pot's great. Sure is. I'm a hippy's kid. My mother grew Afghan Sens in Northern CA when I was my son's age. Within a year feuds between growers saw three people murdered. First a pacifist VietVet (shot by the guy who drove me to school each day) then my stepfather, then my little brother. Yep, pot rules.

I was listening to a lot of Pavement today over internet radio--good stuff. And I found this thread by searching for photos of the show, which it has. The comments of my fellow show-goers is icing on that cake. I'm trying to put faces to the posts--these people were obviously all around me (up front, center).

The people I interacted with were all nice, even the ladies with the blunt. I could see the conflict at the barrier, just didn't know the back-story.

Actually, the smoke did blow right in our faces, but I agree you didn't 'blow it' that way, it was just the way the air moved. I'm sorry I gave you crap about it. It just freaked me out a bit to all of a sudden have my son get hit with a blast like that. It would be nice if kids could have a transition into being exposed to this stuff. I figured the Bandshell was going to be safe as an intro to the 'going to see bands' scene.

I don't think it's ridiculous to not want a big pot-smoke blast in a 13 y.o.'s face at an all-ages show. But, I did chill, stayed right there and we had a great time. I hope you did too, despite my yelling at you.

this is probably the weakest thread ever on this website.

I can tell you that definitely a lot of interesting people have tuned this site out, not just because of all the baseless negativity and shit talking (though that sucks A LOT), but because the comments are just getting less and less compelling.

There's probably still the same quantity of new "unique visitor" hits, but the quality of the readership has gone way way down.

It's obvious why. This site used to be a forum for people who are involved in music and have interesting insight into the world of bands and albums and shows. There was a low-rent salon atmosphere of people who work in the biz and people in bands talking about music related subjects in a serious way. Now everytime someone tries to have a serious discussion, it quickly turns into a juvenile name calling exercise: You're an imbecile, no you're stupid, no you're a jerk, no you're a moron.... and so on. What's interesting to read in that conversation?

That "A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole" is a big part of that lately, but not the sole offender, not by a mile.

Too bad, this site was a good read for awhile. Now it's just fucking tiresome. YAWN

the threads also used to be entertaining and funny.

now it's just uninspired insults (you're a stupid bitch", etc) and I'm-going-to-say-something-dumber-than-I-actually-am jokes (ie., "I'd hit it", etc.)

i'd hit it

I didn't even go but the lack of "I Summon You" on the setlist makes me a little sad. Other than that it looked like a great show even with the frat boys, jew-fros, huge bag toting girls and pot blowing twenty-somethings. Gotta love NY.

where else is there but NYC?

Seriously, who doesn't recongize Rocks Off? You might not know the name of the same, or the album, or even that's it's a Stones song, but how can you never heard of Rocks Off?

I have seen both Patti Smith and Yo La Tengo perform it live, it's a well-known song. Sounds like some people need to stop reading Pitchfork and discover other music.

>13 year old kids don't belong @ spoon concerts!

I'm sure the band would agree with you. Why would they want a new generation of fans to buy their discs and concert tickets and merchandise?

I mostly agree with the 'you have to expect these things at a rock show' but whether you people like it or not, this was an all-ages show in a city park behind a playground where the band had to be sure to be off the stage by...11 or 12...because of noise limits (I used to live across the street from the shell, but forget the time rule). If you want an adult-only crowd, go to a club. Spoon chose to play the event. Its not for you to say who should be able to attend.

Any of you who are criticizing the White Rabbits because of the way they dressed have some issues of your own. I'm glad they don't conform to the ridiculous tight-pants-wearing, long-haired look that wanna-be, dime-a-dozen bands rock these days.

They killed. Their rhythms and melodies are smart and extremely well composed, not to mention that their show was EXTREMELY clean in terms of intros/outros, transitions and vocals. I don't think many of you realize how difficult it is to have six people meld like they do...

Yes, I will admit that they didn't look the happiest during the show but the crowd at Prospect was crap: noone clapped, people were talking loudly during songs, etc. Love the venue b/c it's outside (i.e. well ventilated if you get my drift), but it's too far of a trek for true manhattanite music fans to venture.

Anyone know when/where they're playing next?

Hey man, I wasn't one of the people smoking weed next to you, but I sure was smoking trees. I paid my 32 dollars and 50 cents just like you, I feel it's my right to enjoy the show how ever I see fit. You have every right to bring your son and all that, but don't expect people to give to shits.

>> feel it's my right to enjoy the show how ever I see fit

But what happens when what your enjoying for your own pleasure then interferes with someone else's enjoyment of the the show.

^^^you fight, or move, or complain about it two days after the show

I think the moral of this whole situation is, there are no rules @ concerts and no one gives to shit about the next man

end of discussion

If someone was spilling their beer on you, or threw up on you, or was farting in your face you might want them to give a shit if you complained. But I didn't politely complain to the ladies with the smoke, I yelled at them. That was me being a jerk and I hope the person in that group that posted reads this so they knows I've apologized.

People were very respectful. Some guys cut in front of us and blocked our view, a guy next to me pointed it out to them, they switched with us.

I agree...but then there are those people who act the same way outside of concerts ...but thats a whole other discussion......

No Rules.

Teach your kid matrial arts. Destroy those that fart in your face.

I miss talking about music.

This concert seemed so mellow I can't believe how much crap is posted here. Stop being so sensitive people jeez. Toughin' up just a little for your own good. Better for your overall health.

Don't bring your son to Bob Dylan!!! more pot!!!! Duck!

If I see any meatheads or hipsters messing with children I promise to jump in swingin'. That would be hilarious at a Dylan show actually
