For many artists, politics are an essential component of both their art and their interactions with community and commerce. In this panel, artists and musicians discuss how politics and art mix in their work and working processes.

Justseeds was founded in 1998 by artist and editor Josh MacPhee, who reached out to like-minded artists to create the Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists' Cooperative. Since 1981, PAPER TIGER (PTTV) has combined media art and activism to create an alternative spin on the traditional television format. Musician Ted Leo has released five politically charged--and critically acclaimed--albums with his band the Pharmacists.

Following presentations by the artists, Gretchen Wagner, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Prints & Illustrated Books, The Museum of Modern Art, moderates a discussion.

A reception follows the event.

In case you didn't notice - Teddy added a 1" arrow pin pointing out his coiffed, open-faced sandwich of manhair. God loves that man. And so do I.

idk maybe i'm retarded but i don't get it. is he actually playing or is he taking part in a discussion about activism with the paper tiger tv guy?

anyone know what songs Ted Leo played during his DJ set?

Posted by butternuts | July 23, 2008 3:00 PM

DJ music at Siren was pretty much background noise. Couldn't hear a thing.

@2:58, I was thinking the same thing. It sounds like this is a speaking engagement + reception, not a performance. But hey $6 for a talk & some drinks doesn't sound half bad to me.

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2008 3:37 PM

.... the only sponsor here is that Grown-Up Soda stuff, so it's just a talk and some pop, basically.

Go see Dylan in Prospect Park or take a trip to see Radiohead in NJ.

Buzz Toast - that arrow pin is a Token Entry pin. I know it's asking alot of weenie indie rockers to know about Ted being in a bunch of hardcore bands back in the day and who Token Entry were but there you go.

Posted by dwid | July 23, 2008 4:19 PM

@ Buzz - I'm on your team buddy!

Posted by Teddy o ga ga | July 23, 2008 4:29 PM

dwid - Buzz Toast grew up a hardcore kid, and knows all-to-well about Token Entry... 'twas only having a joke at Teddy's expense... because he's the cat's pajamas!

More people should listen to hardcore. Might make the crowded, morning commute on the F-train more fun...

Ted Leo played not one but 2 Rush songs at Siren before Malkmus which made me pretty happy! I worked the castle clinton show but didn't get to see much of his set (thought I heard the whole thing) I was the dude in the black flag shirt pouring beer.

Not that this show is any big deal nor would I even want to get a ticket for it but congrats to you Poprally for knowing the right time to put on a show. The same night as Dylan in Prospect Park, Radiohead in Camden and Neil Diamond at Madison Square Garden

Along with your excellent ticket system you set up a la Sigur Ros, it certainly is clear you have some real Einstein's working for you.

Way to go morons.

...and yes all 3 of those other shows mentioned have people who might have otherwise gone to this.

What's the drinking situation at Castle Clinton? Can you bring stuff in or do they have $6 beers?

Posted by dave | July 24, 2008 10:26 AM

i think river to river has an across the board 6 dollar beer policy for all their shows. but show up drunk and be an asshole to staff, they love that.

open-faced sandwich of manhair? i'm literally dying over here. where does one come up with this stuff?
