The Gits movie, party tonight w/ Kathleen Hanna & more

The documentary film THE GITS has been confirmed for theatrical release on July 7 [today], the 15th memorial anniversary of death of lead singer Mia Zapata. For all you unfamiliar with the band of the same name, this is the story of the Seattle punk band led by lead singer Mia Zapata who was senselessly murdered with the band on the brink of breaking. The movie is playing at Pioneer Theater. This party is happening tonight:
While this is indeed a tragic story, THE GITS is a truly moving and loving documentary that is also uplifting and hopeful even after many years Zapata's death was thought to be unsolvable. This July, THE GITS will receive national theatrical screenings in selected cities throughout the US and Canada along with a DVD release around the same time.
THE GITS MOVIE OFFICIAL NYC PREMIERE PARTYTickets are still on sale. Movie trailers below...Monday, Jul 07, 2008 9:00 PM EDT (9:00 PM Doors) at The Delancey
THE GITS MOVIE OFFICIAL NYC PREMIERE PARTY AND VIGIL with Special guests KATHLEEN HANNA (Bikini Kill/Le Tigre), ALLISON WOLFE (Bratmobile) and featuring the RRRIOT! Girl Tribute show and Bands : GRRRL FRIEND , SWEAR ON YOUR LIFE , DORMITORY EFFECT , CHERI LOVE AFFAIR and special guest DJ DARIO SPEEDWAGON
In the early 1990s, Seattle was the focal point of an emerging musical underground. The Gits helped spearhead this new scene. Their sound was proto-grunge and all-out punk aggression. The earnest, blues wail of front woman Mia Zapatawas its center. Mia was the very embodiment of riot grrrl intensity, talent, and humanity. Her uncompromised integrity epitomized a way of life that influenced an entire generation of female artists to follow.Upon returning from a successful European tour -and at the height of The Gits' popularity- singer Mia Zapata was found raped and murdered, unfairly abbreviating the band's fable. Incredibly, more than a decade later, new evidence would surface, Mia's case file would be reopened, and a suspect would be brought justice --as cameras rolled.
The Gits is an account of overcoming adversity, addiction, love, loss and pain.
It's a punk rock mystery, but not merely a tale of tragedy.
It's the mythic story of a great American Rock N Roll band.

1:33: Those who have an appreciation for punk history that influenced the sorry excuse for indie rock that is out today. Poser. :)

Who cares? I guess Kathleen Hanna, Joan Jett, people who are actually more talented and influential than the shitty hipster bands you listen to.

"...a suspect would be brought justice --as cameras rolled."
'Cause film or video cameras make such a momentous event that much more important. Get over yourselves, you "auteurs."

"Who Cares?" I do, she was my cousin. This movie is a phenomenal tribute to her.

RE: Sheesh
You are ignorant. That statement in the press release referred to the fact it was coincidental that a suspect surfaced as the film was being put together.
In regards to this BV post in general:
Mia Zapata was a raw, painfully honest, gifted songwriter and performer. The connection with her band mates and fans is something the music scene is beginning to see less and less often. The manner in which world lost such an artist is beyond a tragedy.
Anyone who has some smarmy comment to make about their music, Mia's death, the film or the Riot Grrl scene should just keep their uninformed mouths shut. These people, their music are remembered for a reason. And the negative comments, quite frankly, are disrespectful of Mia's memory and the anguish those feel about her death.

RE: WHO CARES
I obviously care as do hundreds if not thousands of people. We obviously care more about Mia Zapata and The Gits more than you because there is this film that was made about them and not about YOU. We spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to make this. I'm proud and honored to have made this film about a unique and talented individual and band. Who is gonna give a crap when you die pal? To Mia's cousin, I spent 6 1/2 years making this film and I am so honored to have been able to do it. Whether you like this film or not, I made it to get The Gits music out there. Thanks to Wrong Island for all your hard work. It is much appreciated.
