Ryan McPhun and Amee Robinson, otherwise known as The Ruby Suns, are another fantastically creative New Zealand band representing the bursting music scene that has been infiltrating the arts global community over the past few years. The extreme-sports-loving, Flight of the Conchords rearing, Lord of the Rings inspiring land of the ferns charms our ears and hearts thanks to the youthful chirpings of the Ruby Suns. Signed to Lil' Chief Records at home, Memphis Industries in Britain, and SubPop in the States, the band formed in 2004 after Californian escapee Ryan moved to Auckland and started playing with several local bands, among them The Brunettes. Embraced by the stellar artists with whom they have been fortunate enough to share a stage, from Throw Me A Statue to labelmates the Fleet Foxes and to the Dodos, it is easy to understand why they are so well-liked and are continually paired with bands that reflect the same energy as theirs. [KEXP]The Brooklyn show went Vivian Girls --> The Ruby Suns --> Tilly & The Wall. The Ruby Suns also recently played their tribal-infused indie rock at the Pitchfork and Sub Pop Festivals. Unfortunately they just don't put on a very engaging live show. Someone else was more harsh...
"Their sound is a combination of Afro-pop, Brazilian Tropicalia, and late 80's Manchester beats. Sounds interesting, right? Not the way Ruby Suns play it." [Have You Heard]To be fair, Ryan didn't think they were that bad at SXSW. More pics from their Music Hall set below...

"i heard they're going to change the name to The Music Hall of WILL BERMAN"
I'd call the people that make these Will Berman comments retards, but that would be too insulting to retards.

I love the way New Zealand is described overseas. Lord of the Rings, Flight of the Concords etc... Good work Brooklyn Vegan!
There's another great New Zealand band coming your way soon. Bang! Bang! Eche! is hitting New York towards late November. You can read an article I wrote on them here
