The Vaselines @ Southpaw

The Stranger: Why the decision to replace the original rhythm section [James Seenan on bass and Kelly's brother Charles on drums] with members of Belle and Sebastian?

Eugene Kelly: We thought it was going to be a one-off gig in Seattle, but it's sort of expanded. So we asked the guys in Belle and Sebastian because we figured it'd be quick and easy. They're really good at picking up songs and not having to rehearse very often. It's worked out really well. Before, the Vaselines never really played what was on the record. We played a different version. Before, it was much more spontaneous and sometimes you didn't know what was going to happen. We thought we'd get people who could reproduce what's on the record. People are going to come and expect to hear that and we want to deliver it for them.

The Vaselines @ Southpaw

The Vaselines played their second US show (with members of Belle and Sebastian) at Southpaw in Brooklyn last night (July 10, 2008). Was it much different than the show at Maxwell's the night before? More pictures below...

Such a great show! The Vaselines make it look so effortless. Also, they have a rare light wit that seems to be missing from so many of today's humorless bands. The Indelicates were terrific as well. Definitely a band to watch.

Too bad the Meat Puppets didn't show. Come to think of it, what the hell is a meat puppet anyway?

Such a great show last night, one of the better one's i've seen this year.

fuck me, 2 blocks away from me and I was off drinking elsewhere... WHY GOD?!

Hands down amazing show.

No joke, just such an amazing atmosphere. I hope they had as much fun as I did.

Vaselines were incredible, I had a big smile on the whole time. Second band were ghastly, pompous, musical theatre cringe-fest. Brilliant combo. Thumbs up Southpaw

vaselines were just amazing.

you know, the indelicates have some great songs. if they just got rid of that ridiculous guitar player i think everyone would have liked them more.

Does anybody remember laughter?

Great show. I can't get Rory Rides me Raw out of my head this morning.

Galloping through the morning dew
There's only one thing that I want to do to you
And it's true
That I'm gonna to do it soon...

i really liked crystal stilts too. great sound and energy....def better than the 2nd band IMO.

i LOVE the vaselines so much. really incredible show. one of the best this year.

The Vaselines were incredible last night, and the banter was hilarious too.

Crystal Stilts were good. The second band not so much- and their guitarist was a complete tool.

i was trying to avoid eye contact with the indelicates guitarist. last night was my first introduction to this band, and was slightly mortified at first but then loved it somewhat.

The Vaselines are GOLD.

STU!

Crap. Crap. Crap. I should've gone.

Craps.

Vaselines SLAYED! My face hurt from smiling.
Crystal Stilts had a great sound. I would love to hear them on record, esp. a song with a decent hook. Indelicates were pretty cringeworthy, though. Way too "precious". And yes, that guitarist was the pits.

Stu wasn't there. That was Stevie Reverb.

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2008 1:26 PM

Stevie killed it with the guitar lead on You Think You're A Man. Great transformation on that track. The B+S folks were fantastic, able to just step out of the way and lay it down for Frances and Eugene to do their thing. Which was beyond charming.

vaselines were so great... flawless rock'n'roll.
