Okay guys, one more thing, this weekend when you're being inundated with all this American Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.

Posted by Ms. Ginny Stroud | July 4, 2008 1:04 PM

me an my white hoodlum friends are gonna burn stuff, drink mint juleps, blare some rock on the box, and dance on the bones till the girls say when.

Pay taxes to who?

I don't want to pay 35% of my weekly pay to taxes either. Seeing what I (don't) get for that money.

Happy Independence Day. Let's continue to strive for even more independence.

Posted by drewo | July 4, 2008 1:54 PM

"Pay taxes to who?"

The British, ya moron

And it's a quote from Dazed and Confused

thx for the pop culture reference attribution info.

Less taxes, more freedom.

Posted by drewo | July 4, 2008 2:47 PM

I'm gonna blow shit up, drink a whole lot of Budweiser and barbeque a bald eagle. Just like a true patriot. Alright alright.

Why the hell is there no mention on this site that WFMU is going to broadcast Sonic Youth live on the radio?

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2008 5:19 PM

I didn't feel like getting rained on, so I skipped the Sonic Youth show. I realize my "love" of Sonic Youth doesn't go as far downtown as Battery Park anyway. Maybe the Village, but Battery Park is too goddamned far.

I was going to listen to it on WFMU, but my speakers aren't working. Oh well. I'll just wait for a set list & pretend I was there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2008 5:20 PM

"Why the hell is there no mention on this site that WFMU is going to broadcast Sonic Youth live on the radio?"

HEY SQUID BRAINS READ THE POST AGAIN!!!!1!

"Listen to Sonic Youth on WFMU. See the fireworks from the Rooftop Films event."

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2008 5:32 PM

That was added later.

Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2008 5:35 PM

this war is a tragedy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 2:23 AM

sonic youth show did not live up to the hype...crowd was dead as a doornail...i could have laid down & taken a nap during the show, sorry to say.

if i see one more pair of wayfarers i am going to stab someone in the face!! wasn't that trend played out last year?? hipsters never learn!!

and thurston preaching about obama -- oh god, get off it...you're SONIC YOUTH playing in NYC...it's pretty much a certainty we're all liberals...

also to the chunky girl wearing gold lame shorts, that's never a good choice when you're so darn hippy!!

Posted by whattimedoesdaftpunkgoon | July 5, 2008 2:39 AM

seriously, sonic youth was a little weak...Kim forgot the lyrics!!

Feelies were fucking insane though.

Posted by butternuts | July 5, 2008 3:07 AM

It barely rained for the show, but SONIC YOUTH was a little disappointing.

Kim Gordon is still a fucking legend though, and it was cool hanging with Chloe Sevigny in the VIP.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 3:15 AM

btw, kim forgot the lyrics to Drunken Butterfly.

the crowd only seemed to respond to songs from Daydream Nation (they played The Sprawl, Silver Rocket, Hey Joni)

hey hipsters, just because Pitchfork says Daydream is the greatest album ever, doesn't mean you shouldn't get their other albums...pick up Sister, Goo and Dirty.

Posted by butternuts | July 5, 2008 3:38 AM

i'd say i feel like i didnt get my money's worth but...obviously. feelies were great though

Posted by jp | July 5, 2008 7:29 AM

you guys are nuts. I thought SY put on a great show, one of the best i've seen them play. great setlist (esp. if you have not seen one of the recent daydream nation performances, which i have not) and some great performances. World Looks Red, Silver Rocket and Cross the Breeze were the highlights for me.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 9:38 AM

yeah, you people are not just nuts, you're just plain dumb. SY was awesome, as they always are. i've seen them so many times -- and they NEVER fail to be just perfect. i don't know how they do it. i've never seen any other band that's so ON all the time.

they opened the set with She Is Not Alone (!!!). setlist also included Making the Nature Scene, the aforementioned songs from DN (Silver Rocket, Cross the Breeze, The Sprawl, Hey Joni) + the awesome Trilogy, Schizophrenia, 100%, Drunken Butterfly, Bull in the Heather, Jams Runs Free...

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 9:47 AM

^^^ totally... I've seen SY countless times, and out of all the shows I've seen them in the last 3 or 4 years, they seemed to be having a great time at this one! Up at the front it was a rollicking good time. I think all the lame-o's were in the back.

But The Feelies were the highlight of the afternoon. Damn. I mean. Damn. They brought it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 9:52 AM

I know I'm supposed to like the Feelies, and this probably means I'm not an official card-carrying member of the cool-kid club, but I thought they were terribly boring.

Sonic Youth's set was relatively short and sweet and I enjoyed them, as always. A lot of posing going on in the crowd, yes---seriously, when is "that crowd" going to realize how fucking lame it is to stand around and pat yourself on the back for putting together just the right ensemble?---but just as annoying were the people with their "hipster picnics" all spread out and sitting down right in the front, then glaring at everyone around them for crowding their space.

The show itself was quite fun though. Great day for it actually.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 10:16 AM

dirty better than daydream nation

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 10:33 AM

this weekend's weather blows

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 10:33 AM

i guess i could've observed the onstage fun more if my view wasn't blocked by tree branches and people would stop using their umbrellas when they weren't even necessary.

the crowd definitely sucked.

NJ party town relaxes rules on kegs, rude gestures

By WAYNE PARRY – 5 hours ago

BELMAR, N.J. (AP) — After battling rowdy renters and out-of-control keggers for decades, this Jersey shore party town has finally decided to lighten up a little.

Belmar, sometimes called "Fort Lauderdale North" for its reputation as a raucous party enclave, has scrapped laws against giving the finger and requiring beer kegs to be registered. The town's mayor said the rules were difficult to enforce.

"I'm not sure anyone even knew that making obscene gestures was illegal," Mayor Ken Pringle said. "Right after we send out our tax bills, I tend to see a few."

The repeals come as the borough has clearly restored some of the quality of life that was routinely shattered by revelers in the 1980s and 90s.

"People that have a hard time obeying our strict rules seem to have gone to other beach towns where the rules are not as tough," he said. "Most of the people who are renting here who are deciding they can behave will not have a problem."

Belmar, on the central Jersey coast about 10 minutes south of Asbury Park, has long been a favorite spot for young people looking for summer fun. The town has 7,000 year-round residents, but the population swells to 60,000 after Memorial Day.

In 1990, there were over 1,200 summer rental units here; now there are just over 300. Lots that once held ramshackle party huts now boast $800,000 homes whose residents are not shy about calling the police to complain about noise.

Belmar has a slew of strict regulations for summer renters that include limits on how many people can cram into one building and when they can put their trash out at the curb. The town also has a "zero tolerance" policy for noise violations, and even leaving empty bottles or beer cups on the porch overnight.

"The cops are relentless here," said Matt Errichiello, a 23-year-old from Haworth who is in his third year of renting a house near the beach with friends. "At night, if you even speak loudly, you get a ticket. The rules are ridiculous."

One rule that's no longer on the books related to raising one's middle finger, or the many variants thereof. However objectionable it might be to some people, such a gesture is constitutionally protected free speech, said Pringle, an attorney.

He said the borough was contacted by civil libertarians who questioned the legality of several municipal ordinances.

The ban on "obscene gestures," which never spelled out exactly what was and was not covered, was overly subjective, Pringle agreed. No one can recall anyone being prosecuted for violating it. Another law prohibiting people from loitering in alleyways also was axed.

And a beer keg tagging law, which Belmar enacted last year with great fanfare, withered and died after the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control said a handful of similar local laws enacted around the state requiring beer kegs to have the name, address and phone number of the person renting them was unconstitutional.

In summer rentals near the Belmar beach, the repeals are being hailed by the party crowd, some of whom consider the right to raise their middle finger in public a newly won freedom to cherish on Independence Day.

"I'm giving people the finger if it's legal, absolutely," laughed Carlos Padilla, a 23-year-old from Dumont wearing a sleeveless white T-shirt and gold chain. He's renting a house for the season with a bunch of pals — all of whom were drinking beer from red plastic cups and listening to rap music on the front porch one night this week.

But he acknowledged he and his friends would try to tone it down this summer.

"There's little kids next door," he said.

His roommate, A.J. Aguila, another 23-year-old from Dumont, isn't eager for a repeat of the time borough code enforcement officers pounded on the front door of his rental at 5:30 a.m. to demand they clean up empty beer cups that had been left on metal picnic tables on the porch.

Pringle said summonses for noise violations are down this summer, and several residents have told him things have been quieter so far this summer.

But in parts of the 1-square mile town, some people still don't get it, continuing to rack up noise violations. Four of the worst offenders will have sheriff's officers stationed outside their houses for the entire weekend, with the $1,000 cost of their overtime pay coming from the landlord's security bond.

redhead in burgundy dress:
i love you, i love you, i love you
what's your name?

i'm sorry i didn't put away my cell phone to stop and talk to you.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 10:56 AM

you guys i dont know what you are talking about, SY totally destroyed.

Feelies, I just wasnt feeling them. two drummers and neither one seemed competent(I guess thats why they needed two)

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 11:11 AM

i hate to be all "i was there when..." but i too HAVE seen SY shows before the last 3 or 4 years (for gods sake it's almost 15 years now, dear god i'm getting old!!) and i'm sorry but i was just not vibing this show at all!!

maybe it was because i was stuck in deadsville usa...i think someone referencing the fact that chloe sevingny (as if that twit is relevant??!) was there proves that it was nothing more than a hipster pose-a-thon with minimal assistance from thurston & co...

also why is it that being a "photographer" is now the cool accessory? how many ppl did YOU see not paying attention to the music but getting their "shot" BLAH!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by whattimedoesdaftpunkgoon | July 5, 2008 12:11 PM

"yeah, you people are not just nuts, you're just plain dumb. SY was awesome, as they always are."

Watch out, fanboy alert! Fanboy alert!!!

Sonic Youth can do no wrong. Sonic Youth are sacred cows. Sonic Youth will ALWAYS be perfect.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 12:12 PM

SY looked like they were having fun. Thurston showed affection towards Kim on stage, and sounded really stupid talking politics. That and the choreography during 100%, there wasn't much notable happening. It was a pretty boring show. Too much Daydream Nation at a time when we're all ready to hear more Goo, and Dirty.

Feelies slept through about most of their set. Percussionist guy thought he was at a practice session, and couldn't decide which cowbell to use. The rest of the band didn't notice, which proves they were sleeping.

Audience were a bunch of ugly rude college kids. That had to be one of the homeliest crowds I've seen at a SY show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 12:18 PM

Man, I'm glad I skipped this show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 12:32 PM

"That had to be one of the homeliest crowds I've seen at a SY show."

My friend said the same thing and he was totally right.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 12:36 PM

You could count the hipster fashion crowd on one hand at this show. The crowd was annoying for entirely different reasons.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 1:53 PM

I've been going to Sonic Youth shows for a lot longer than 3 or 4 years and I thought yesterday was incredible. Great setlist - lots of old songs and lots of noise. I'm not sure what else people could want.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 2:15 PM

all they want is to
say how bad shit is
to prove how COOL THEY are

Posted by gregory | July 5, 2008 2:47 PM

Gregory - Nobody even said the show was bad, they just expressed some opinions. If you want to buy into hype and pretend everything is cooler then it is then what does that say about you?

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 3:56 PM

jesus christ... i can't believe the comment writers here... what you saw yesterday was a great, awe-inspiring, original, 100% authentic band in complete control of their art, musicians/performers who know both how to play and how to present themselves onstage, playing perfect versions of some of the best songs of their career with enthusiasm and joy. what the FUCK else do you want?!

that lots of people are stupid is no big news. that so many people who go to a SY show are stupid is surprising.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 5:39 PM

I don't know what show you people saw, but this one was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 5:52 PM

"in complete control of their art"

They were in complete control when Kim Gordon forgot the lyrics?

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 6:04 PM

^^^^

That was actually cute, and one of my favorite parts of the show....

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 6:23 PM

Thurston deserves props for flat out refusing to where starbuck's corporate green as specified in their contract. Take that big business! Hopefully they can hire a good lawyer to defend them for breach.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 7:19 PM

*wear
Fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 7:21 PM

"in complete control of their art"
They were in complete control when Kim Gordon forgot the lyrics?

man, that's a really stupid comment to make. there's a difference between a master making the occasional, rare mistake, and someone (i.e., most bands out there) who've never come close to that level of mastery to begin with.

(and yes, that WAS cute.)

seriously, if you thought this show was mediocre, i feel sorry for you. to be in the presence of effortless greatness yet too blind and deaf to appreciate it... that must suck.

i'm sure you really enjoyed that free coldplay show though.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 7:34 PM

ANYONE who says the crowd was dead was standing in the wrong place. My area was jumping around like mad. The show was fantastic. I've never seen such amazing musicians in my life.

Jesus, I hate hipsters. All you fuckers ever do is complain.

Posted by sixtypercentgrey | July 5, 2008 8:01 PM

Seriously.... you have to be deranged to think THAT audience was made up of "hipsters".

"if you thought this show was mediocre, i feel sorry for you. to be in the presence of effortless greatness "

Um, have you ever seen SY before? That was a mediocre show for them. The fact that you used the word "effortless" perfectly articulates why this show was just so-so.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 9:19 PM

We had a great time about 5-10 people deep, stage left, directly in line with Thurston.

Electrifying!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 9:51 PM

SY can do NO wrong. i love you, i love you, i love you--what's yr name?

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 9:55 PM

anon 9:19 --

yes, i've seen SY live many times before, from the late 80s onward. and yes, i've seen SY shows that were much more intense, earth-shattering, mind-altering, life-changing, and so forth. by comparison, yesterday's show was easygoing, relaxed, breezy, etc etc. if that's what you mean by "mediocre for them," then fine. but that's not what some of the brainless commenters above seem to have meant: comments like "sonic youth show did not live up to the hype" are more stupid than andrew dice clay's recent public appearances.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 10:03 PM

Andrew Dice Clay made appearances recently?! Damn you, BV & Klaus Kinski, for not giving us the heads up.

Posted by Anonymous | July 5, 2008 10:53 PM

-- There was a mosh pit. In gentrified Battery Park in 2008. I don't get how the crowd was dead. Most of the kids in it were teenagers who weren't dressed like hipsters at all.

-- Unless you are a creepy old guy looking to get laid, I don't see why the attractiveness of the crowd matters. I saw some cute girls.

-- Apparently you ARE creepy old guys, because what you're describing as "hipster" is just what's in now. Yeah, so it's like any other trend and people wear stupid stuff. It was a great show. A free show. Stay home and listen to Merzbow next time.

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2008 1:24 AM

If American Express thought it was a good show, it had to be a good show. Corporate America always has my best interests in mind!

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2008 1:26 AM

that was a pretty weak mosh pit, but yes-- it did exist.

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2008 1:29 AM

I expect all of you bitching about mosh pits to be at the next metal / hardcore show breaking some noses.

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2008 9:06 AM

"Gentrified Battery Park" ? Uh...

Anyway, this will cause sadness for anyone who thought they were at the raging show of the year, but the majority of the audience was 20+ feet from the stage and had a different experience. It was pretty lifeless in Battery Park.

It was cool, and it was free, but some of the gushing over the greatness of the show is dishonest. If you didn't get a ticket, you didn't miss much.

Posted by Anonymous | July 6, 2008 1:40 PM

i'm not sure i get the comments about this concert being "lifeless"... do you mean that the audience (or much of it, anyway) was lifeless? if so, then fair enough... although the people complaining about how "lifeless" a show was often tend to be precisely those who themselves acted like lifeless lumps of meat.

or do you mean that SY was lifeless? if that's what you mean, then i really feel sorry for you...
