I really wish I would've made it to Summerstage earlier so I could actually get in. The sound was still awesome sitting on a large rock outside the venue.

Did they stop letting people in? It was full, but it wasn't packed. And he was awesome.

The Moods are on that Calamity Magnet bill at KF... sorta power pop in a Superdrag kind of way, pretty good what I've heard.

J:
They stopped letting people in before Seun's set.
Then they had about 75-100 people line up by the entrance, and would let them in every 15 minutes.
Immediately after those 75-100 people went in, another 75-100 would take their place within a few minutes. This went on throughout his entire set.
My friends and I, being stoned and impatient, decided that waiting on the line would be a waste of time and we might as well just chill out on the large rock outside.
Was still very enjoyable, even though I really want to see Seun or Femi up close next time.

The August issue of Consumer Reports includes an article about buying tickets to concerts, sporting events, etc. You can read it for free (as of this writing, at least) at their Web site (link below).

Maybe you should have spent less time getting stoned and shown up like an hour before the show started. Then you would have gotten in no problem. Most of the time if you show up to Summerstage right before the headliner is going on then you are not getting in. I and my party got stoned and drunk early in the morning in Central Park and then headed over around 1. Show was great although Seun is not as good as Femi and both are nowhere close to being as amazing as Fela.

Re: Summerstage, that hasn't been true in the past. You can show up BEFORE the opening act and still find yourself stuck in a line. Said line will then barely move letting in 10 people at a time through the first two opening acts. If you do make it inside, you'll usually find it half empty.
If you show up before doors open, you have to wait in line.
If you show up after the doors open chances are they're holding the line at the door.
If you showed up at 1pm, you had to sit around somewhere for 2 hours before the show started.

Anon 2:56 dude I dont know what summerstage shows you have been going to but bottom line if you show up well before the opening act starts you are getting in without any problem. Yes you might have to sit around inside for a little while but hey that is the price you pay if you want to see the show. Not too heavy a price considering the show is FREE.

Paio Laa. the problem is that you and your recurring joke are witless and shrill, not the concept of recurring jokes.
it's just you. you're lame, a loser, pathetic, a little boy trying to entertain adults and reminding them why it sucks to be around children

Exactly. The Daft Punk thing was funny for a while. The Vivian Girls Santos thing sounds like a 10 year old. Not only that, but it comes off as distasteful bashing of young artists and a new venue.

this summestage business is crap. Back in the day (1990s?)there were no lines and it was a self regulating organism, now everything has to be fucking controlled to the last person, I mean are there any historians here? when did this business with lines and capacities start?

Yeah well it is a new world. Gas is now over 4 dollars. YouTube gives any shithead a forum for millions see his/her talentless ass at work. Deal with it. Adapt and survive.
Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | July 8, 2008 3:41 PM
as for the current Summerstage lameness, thanks go to Rudy Giuliani and his handing off of all city event planning and management to the police, who promptly imposed the fucking police state current system.
You can further blame the Puerto Rican Day parade, 2000, for giving Giuliani and the cops the populist justification to crack down on events, parades, and demonstrations.
too many riot barriers, too much funneling of people in and out, too much suffocation of the free spirit and the fun. Too little tolerance for chilling out and/or drinking booze.
The current Summerstage vibe is the polar opposite of a free show in the park.
Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 3:43 PM
3:41. you're right. Change nothing, discuss nothing. things may change around you, but you should just accept what comes down the pike and never think you could have any affect. Lean back, take your antidepressants, watch your tv, don't go out anymore.
Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 3:49 PM
I hate stuff that's free.
Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 3:50 PM
anonymous + someone else = funny police
don't cry too hard kanye...you'll wet your mac book air...and we all know how crying reminds us adults of why it sucks to be around children. geez, it's like you've never even been to a dan deacon show!
i prefer tasteful bashing...tastes like santos...no no...tastes like young venues...tasty like vivian girls santos thing.
next post type in caps...that's yelling...children respond to it, but it makes them cry.
too much dudes...too much.

Also, since we're on this topic, when did all the free shows start requiring tickets?
This is ridiculous. The Sonic Youth Battery Park show reservation then ticket pick up and then second early morning redistribution and then scalping of the tickets over the internet, and then people not getting in because they didn;t have a ticket while there was certainly plenty of room to fit some more people in in the back at the last minute was just stupid.
When Sonic Youth played at Summerstage on the 4th of July 1992, there were no freaking tickets! Just show up.
Now they have to freakin control all large free events with tickets. Like this stupid Bob Jovi crap on the Great Lawn for 60,000 people, they have to give out tickets which people are now selling. All through history free concerts in Central Park were just show up.
Lame ass city this has turned into. Use to be a great free spirit and vibe here. Now it's controlled and corporate and bullshit, and no fun. You have to go through all sorts of unnecessary hoops just to go to a free popular event, when it used to be you could just show up.
If something is a widely popular event and free it's become such a pain in the ass now that it would be better for all involved if they charged admission.

Anon 3:49 I am glad you are taking up the cause of free shows in the city. Yes Che Moron, you should do something about this crap. Lead us all into the new world of free concerts where you do not have to actually get there somewhat early to get in comfortably and see the show. Rail against the injustice of not being able to show up right before the headlining band goes on and feel like you 100% will get in. And you seem to have a partner in Anon 3:58. Cause truly showing up an hour and half before the Summerstage show this past Sunday and having to sit inside with my friends and hangout for a little bit was such an unnecessary hassle. Oh the insanity of it all.

"as for the current Summerstage lameness, thanks go to Rudy Giuliani and his handing off of all city event planning and management to the police, who promptly imposed the fucking police state current system."
You know what? I think you are right.
In the '90s, there was little problems seeing shows at Central Park. In the past ten years, Summerstage has gone downhill. Many years ago, I went to see a hip-hop 4th of July show. It was an all day affair, with many bands. After awhile, the Summerstage show staff stopped letting people in because they were full. It was still early on, and many people were leaving. At one point, KRS One (I think, not 100% sure) was yelling on stage: "can we please let some people in? there is no one left in here". I was outside, so I couldn't tell. Apparently, towards the end, the venue was almost empty.
So many good shows in the past, I doubt we will ever see something as good:
Rocket from the Crypt with a party bus on the way to the show.
Manu Chao / Gogol Bordello double bill.
What do we get now? Overpriced Heineken.
Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2008 10:17 PM
ok some other guy here is making a good point, because back in the 90s like for ex Juliana Hatfield show, Sonic Youth in 92, and other shows which I now dont remember you could just stroll in and there was no one there to stop you, you could actually walk around the park, go by the pond dip your feet in the water, go listen to some music for 15 minutes, leave and come back and not have to worry that you werent getting back in.
also all the entrances were open (unlike now where you have 1 entrance) and grass/dirt ground instead of nasty astroturf in there now and no silly L shaped barrier running the length of the place(which reduces the capacity by at least few hundered people, and causes bottle neck at that side of the field.
SO in the past Cetral Park Summerstage was much more fun than it is now.
