Well at least there wont be as many people at the MGMT show because of the rain.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:40 AM

SPRINGSTEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:46 AM

Is today's McCarren show rain or shine?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:51 AM

well, it rained pretty hard when the hold steady played the pool so I don't see why they would chancel this one.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:53 AM

spaceman!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:05 PM

Does anyone have the set times fro MCarren Pool? What time do the Ting Tings go on?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:19 PM

3:30 4:30 5:30

same as always.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:25 PM

Nick Swardson is in "!!!"?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:27 PM

"What time do the Ting Tings go on?"

A better question is, what time do The Ting Tings cancel?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:27 PM

it's black MOTH super rainbow, not mother :)

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:27 PM

Taj Mahal at Summerstage. Seriously, how could anyone choose mgmt over Taj?

Posted by James | July 27, 2008 12:29 PM

Perhaps Black Moth's mother is playing a surprise set?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 12:30 PM

i really like mgmt's album but they were pretty mediocre live. yeasayer blew them off the stage. i'm jelous of anyone going to that nationa/yeasayer/plants an animal show .

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 1:05 PM

1:05 i'm kind of in agreement with you...saw that show at MHoW and found mgmt underwhelming. part of it was the drums... which just didin't have the oomph they do on the album...they need a great drummer, not just a good one. but that yeasayer/mgmt show was a while back and they've been gigging pretty much constantly since then, so maybe they've got it down now.

Posted by bill p | July 27, 2008 1:25 PM

James:

Couldn't agree with you more. It's a sad, pathetic world we live in when far more people will flock to the pool to see MGMT than to Central Park to see one of the great blues legends.

How did you not even list this show, BV?

The white ray bans are taking over. It's not a good thing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 1:29 PM

"i'm jelous of anyone going to that nationa/yeasayer/plants an animal show ."

Why be jealous? I don't think it's sold out.

MGMT are basically Brooklyn's answer to Maroon 5 (hipster clothing and all).

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 1:55 PM

cmon, you can't expect everyone to like the blues. especially since it's kind of been mostly a dead genre for the last, oh, 3 decades (swallowed up and neutered by "blues rock" and other white person evils)

I <3 blues music, and taj mahal is great, but you can't blame people too much for preferring to see new music in a fun atmosphere, to a relic of a played-out genre performing for a bunch of middle aged bland white people

(coming from someone who spent most of highschool listening to buddy guy, albert king, howlin wolf, and whatnot)

Posted by kate | July 27, 2008 1:55 PM

yeah dude, blues is gay.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 1:59 PM

the new buddy guy album skin deep is great once you get past the first single

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 2:01 PM

bear hands ain't playing union pool tonite

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 2:02 PM

MGMT are trannys

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 2:08 PM

Taj Mahal vs. MGMT? A bit of a false choice when you consider that they couldn't be more different. People look for different things when they want to enjoy music man. Relax and enjoy what you will.

The White Ray Bans are certainly annoying, but they're just one of many fruits of the problem, not the root.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 2:10 PM

"yeah dude, blues is gay."

If not for blues, rock and roll doesn't exist.

"Electric Feel", now that's gay. Literally, a song most homosexual males would certainly enjoy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 2:21 PM

so how long is that MGMT line?

RIDICULOUS!

Kinda reminds me of when Sonic Youth played the pool with the YYY's and most of the "teens" were there to support the YYY's. Ahhhhh, the youth is fucked.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 2:22 PM

Just walked past McCarren. The line is totally insane. How did MGMT get so popular?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 3:00 PM

How are people going to get down at !!!?

-Rock out with your cock out?

or

-Hang out with your wang out?

Posted by !!! + E = Good Times | July 27, 2008 3:03 PM

there is truly no comparison between taj and mgmt.

you either enjoy the music of a living legend who is the embodiment of the blues...

...or you throw on those white raybans and go to mgmt.

mgmt should go to summer stage.
they could stand to learn a few things from that man.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 3:23 PM

Singin' in the rain!

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 3:25 PM

i know plenty of annoying people who like taj mahal.
just because you like a band doesn't give you any type of credibility or superiority. old slash new... just enjoy what you will. why do you get upset about other peoples enjoyment. learn that, ok thanks.

and whats the big deal with homosexual's liking electric feel. youre amazingly naive to think no gay person like taj.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 3:37 PM

3:23 "there is truly no comparison between taj and mgmt"

you should've just stopped there and not contradicted yourself

it's possible to like mgmt AND taj mahal, yknow. they've got different styles and intentions. down with yr musical hierarchy

Posted by kate | July 27, 2008 3:38 PM

It's pretty rainy and stormy out right now at 4 pm- do the concerts continue anyway or have they been cancelled? Can anyone tell me? Thankyou

Posted by Steve | July 27, 2008 3:59 PM

the Jelly website says the shows go on rain or shine, so as far as i can tell, they're still out there playing: http://www.jellynyc.com/media/heads-up-yall/#comment-2778

Posted by lambert | July 27, 2008 4:06 PM

but if there is lightning they may call it short. Death Cab had to end 6 songs early back in June because of the lightning.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 4:36 PM

Thank you! I'm too lame perhaps but the idea of standing in the rain and thunder and lightning isn't appealing to me. Too bad because I was really looking forward to today.

Posted by Steve | July 27, 2008 4:42 PM

so how's it looking out there now?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 4:54 PM

Just walked by the Pool and it's amazing that the rain apparently scared few people off to see MGMT. The line is still huge and the front entrance is now frozen ala The Breeders show. If you're not on a list to get in the back entrance or you're not already inside, don't even waste your time.

Posted by blackhat | July 27, 2008 5:40 PM

just left the pool-tons of people STILL WAITING in line, despite the fact that they're not letting anyone in and MGMT are 6 or 7 songs in. I can't believe how many people came--I thought it would be empty because of the rain, but it's the most crowded one yet.

got there at 3:30 and the line was already wrapped all the way around the pool, which I've never seen in 3 years of these things. Black Moth were fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 6:02 PM

why is everyone shocked that this show was so packed?

Huge hipster band playing hipster pop songs for free in the hipster capital of the world.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 6:20 PM

"Huge hipster band playing hipster pop songs"

Well put.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 6:45 PM

"Huge hipster band playing hipster pop songs"

Well put.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 6:45 PM

Understood...but 80% of Jelly NYC's Summer Pool lineup consists of "huge hipster bands." That's why they get booked in the first place. However, TV On The Radio was fresh off a new album and minor radio hit last year but when it rained, you could walk right into the Pool for their show. I still say today's huge crowd seemed kinda surprising.

Posted by blackhat | July 27, 2008 7:01 PM

MGMT has been averaging well over 30k plays on their MySpace each day. Definitely surprising.

I think it's fair to say that MGMT is a bigger band than TV on the Radio. "Time To Pretend" is a bigger single than TV on the Radio has ever had.

That said, MGMT is hipster trash.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 7:16 PM

The following bands suck:
Animal Collective
!!!
Dan Deacon
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Les Savy Fav
HEALTH
Interpol
Vampire Weekend
The National
MGMT
Hot Chip
Xiu Xiu

Stop listening to them, please.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 7:19 PM

haha 7:19 is way worse than the hipster douche music snobs he despises.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 7:40 PM

What is a hipster anyway?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 7:42 PM

strike Interpol off that list and i agree

Posted by pauly blunts | July 27, 2008 7:43 PM

Half of those bands do suck. But the other half are great. By what fucked up logic did you compile this list?

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 7:43 PM

7:19 is a reasonable fellow.

In large part, the hipsters can't be blamed entirely for their dismal taste in music. They are merely a product of their environment.

They weren't raised on "Bitches Brew", "Atom Heart Mother", or any of Son House's recordings.

At least hippies listened to good music.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 7:50 PM

Yeah, with emphasis on the past tense.

Today's brand of "hippies" listen to shit that's far, far worse than any hipster music banging at American Apparel

(see: Trey Anastasio, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, etc.)

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 8:13 PM

I am not a huge Phish fan by any means, by Trey is one of the greatest guitar players ever. Far better than any guitarist in these hipster bands.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=K3xQayo_r4g

Try to have the patience to make it to the solo.

Yes, hipsters, Phish covered Talking Heads. They also covered all of "Loaded". Go figure.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 8:21 PM

I walked past McCarren casually today and the line was ridiculous. how did these pool parties get so big? they used to be so chill, you could show up anytime and stroll right in, no problem. I think the mistake is booking too many big bands. they need to keep it low-key and chill. actually, let the whole damn thing die. I'm sick of the pool parties, they have become a sick orgy of hipster trust-fund materialism and emptyness. everything is white and looks effing the same.

Posted by McDoodoo | July 27, 2008 8:21 PM

8:21 - thank you for that video. Trey is such a beast.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 8:32 PM

I officially have no idea who reads this blog. 7:19 - what is even the point of your post? The mere fact that you would write something like that, regardless of the bands you list, makes you a bigger fucking snob asshole than anyone who listens to those bands. YOU are what is wrong with the music culture today and you can promptly go fuck yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 9:11 PM

"Trey is one of the greatest guitar players ever. "

No he's not. He's one of the most technically proficient guitar players of the last 20 years or so, but a truly great guitar player understands the value of restraint. Trey is certainly talented, but he's way too self-indulgent to be truly great.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 9:39 PM

8:21- I was gonna go to the MGMT show, but my trust fund is running out.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 9:47 PM

Would anyone care to write a short (or long) review of the MGMT show? For the spectacle, and for the music, I was looking forward to seeing them perform Time to Pretend, but I didn't get in and (boo-hoo) went home.

Posted by Anonymous 2 | July 27, 2008 10:03 PM

MGMT were surpringly as good as their album.

My only major concern is that at the exact moment they began "Electric Feel" the ten-plus underagers in front of me decided moshing would be "cute". If you're over 5', moshing isn't cute.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 10:05 PM

mgmt was great. You didn't have to wait in line. Just fuckin waltz in there. Anyone who waited in line was a sucker.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 10:18 PM

MGMT was actually really good at the pool...

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 10:21 PM

really good? are you guys serious? majorly disappointing

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:04 PM

Fleet Foxes is the only new band that matters. Bottom line.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:11 PM

shut up 11:11.

i thought MGMT were good. they were doing a jam band thing which was like 'ugh no' for more people because we'd been standing in line for so goddamn long and it was raining and maybe not in the mood to ~jam, but i liked it. the lead singer is like 16 or something? idk, but he was really adorable and they did good. i think they would do so much better in a different venue. and you have to want to see them. it's not surprising Of Montreal fans who saw them last year hated them because you kind of have to hear the record to be into the live show. but i stand by my assertion that they did good.

didn't get in for the ting tings but what i could hear from outside they sounded pretty good. black moth weren't anything special to look at, the songs sounded exactly like they do on the record so i was just like whatever this is fun because it's a good record.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:21 PM

i was surprised the line was 12 blocks long but not surprised some douchebag started a second line.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:23 PM

overheard @ mgmt:

"so which one is kirsten dunst banging? anyone?"

Posted by john mccain | July 27, 2008 11:28 PM

Andrew VanWyngarden

Posted by Mitt Romney | July 27, 2008 11:37 PM

Anon 11:21 - your comment was so poorly written, it was painful to read.

"they did good" - awesome. that's a rave review.

"i think they would do so much better in a different venue. and you have to want to see them" - yeah, typically I go to a show because I enjoy the band and want to see them play live.

"you kind of have to hear the record to be into the live show" - or, if they are an epic group of musicians, you can be blown away without having heard their music before.

"black moth weren't anything special to look at" - who gives a fuck about what they look like? you're clearly coming from the hipster camp, one that places greater emphasis on a band's clothing than their music.

Posted by Anonymous | July 27, 2008 11:44 PM

Anon 9:39, you think you know that your statement about Trey's playing is correct, but you're wrong.

MGMT sounded great at the pool and it makes total sense that they drew such a big crowd on a shitty day. They appeal to a lot of people.

And why are so many of you concerned about someone else's trust-fund and the level of their hipness? You're a privileged asshole too, who moved to NY and started dressing differently and speaking your opinions more loudly. When it comes down to it, we're all a bit the same...we all love music and we'll all be voting for Obama...and all our mama's are hipsters.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:04 AM

I'm voting for Lyndon LaRouche.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:16 AM

got there at 3pm and it was the longet line Ive ever seen at the pool and the first show I failed to get into. supposedly they stopped letting people in by the time Black Moth came on or around 4:30.

So my guess is if you got there around 2 pm itwas probably too late to get in. Couple of girls were superheroes, I saw them climbing the chain link fence and getting inside despite the fact cops were strategically positioned to prevent this.

Sorry if this info blows it for someone else trying same thing next time a show is so packed. couple of girls climbed the fence on the park side and one security guy told them to jump down and if they jumped down right away they would have been in, but they hesitated and then a guy from the inside said to go back, one of those chicks almost got impaled on the fence going back down.

sorry if this ruins it for next time and forces more security for next time it was pretty crazy how some people were so desperate to get in. Jelly said (some guy) they wanted to let more people in but the parks departement was preventing this from happening.

As for the bands the sound outside was pretty damn good, it was my first time watching from outside but all things considered some spots it was almost as good or better as on the inside only downside is we could only see a little bit inside. MGMT were pretty damn tight though I've never seen them before and they aren't even my type of music.

and I would say, for those last run of shows, to be sure of getting in, you might have to show there way earlier than it used to be necessary.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:19 AM

right on, Anon 12:04.

taste/opinion is entirely subjective. how boring would it be if we all liked/disliked the same music?

trey is an incredibly talented guitarist. one of the best ever: fact.

MGMT write catchy pop songs and thus appeal to a large number of people: fact.

We're all voting for Obama: that better be fact.

Peace.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:22 AM

I would just add, this whole thing with the pool being not entirely full, and yet people not being allowed inside, I suspect this just might be someone at Parks Dept giving us indie music fans and JellyNYC the finger over the whole petition to keep the pool as it is.

If you went to the shows these past weeks you know they have announced this petition from the stage and you can sign it by the entrance. That's a pretty direct challenge to this park dept decision to bring the pool back, and I think this is how they get back at us now by making this thing a hell for a lot of people and leave a lot of people absolutely crushed about getting shut out of the shows, to the point where they will say this pool well good riddance.

just saying, maybe take your time and call or e-mail parks with complaints tomorrow. how they justified closing the doors at 4:30 or so, with thousands of people still waiting outside, and even then people were leaving but no one else was allowed inside for the rest of the show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:32 AM

don't you think it has something to do with firecodes and the fact that there's really only one small entrance/exit to the place?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:39 AM

Yeah, I think that may be a little indie paranoia there. I don't think there's a Parks Dept. villain stroking a kitten and plotting to rid the world of indie music fans.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:43 AM

well, just saying a lot of people have a lot to gain when contracts for public works get passed around. think about the Washington Square park renovation debacle, did anyone think that whole mess needed to happen outside the contractors who made money on that deal?

I suspect now same kind of deals are already struck, and we are getting a pool which no one really wants. oh well.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:49 AM

also, think about this and Central Park Summerstage, as big a mess as that place is compared to how it used to be, they have the one in one out policy there, and you can stand on the line and if people leave eventually groups of people are let in, people still have a hope of getting in even in the middle of the last set.

Here they cut off the line 2 and a half hours before curfew, many people left at some point (I saw at least 2 dozen people leave just hanging out by the entrace at around 6 pm) and still no one was being let in inside.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 12:53 AM

eewww, I'M not voting for obama...

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:18 AM

jesus christ. take off your ironic, used, vintage tinfoil hat. the city wants to turn it into something for more mixed use. what's wrong with that? jelly already said they'll find a place to put on free shows next summer.

mccarren, as it stands, is a dump. nobody ever intended to turn such a large, public, and quite valuable public space into a permanent concert venue. the whole point was to see if the space was viable. and it is.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:21 AM

and christ, stop complaining. these shows are free. f-r-e-e. if they're getting more popular, it means you have to show up earlier. or don't waste your time (in the rain) since, you know, time = money, and go see this band next time they come back to play terminal 5 for probably $20.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:24 AM

every single comment in this post makes me want to kick myself in the head

the hipsters and hipster haters are awful, especially that douche who mentioned bitches brew

OH MAN YOU LIKE MILES DAVIS YOU'RE SO FUCKING COOL

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:25 AM

miles davis is playing santos party house tomorrow (he's playing the entire kind of blue album). special midnight show, and it's free. make sure you add it to the free list of shows, bv.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:28 AM

i though mgmt was kinda meh. i was thinking about going to taj mahal (and the skatelites btw), but mccarren is a shorter bike ride. i also really dug mgmt's album and kinda wanted to see them live, despite hearing mostly negative reviews. they jammed out a bit, but the jams weren't too interesting until the encore. i guarantee it was more fun than taj mahal though.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:31 AM

do you work for the parks dept? if you do explain to us why the door policy here at the pool different from summmerstage? ask the people who stood there at the front of the line (we saw the same people stand there for at least two hours hoping to get in) how many people left without anyone else being allowed in.

if jelly was fine with it why for fucks sake are they passing a petition around to keep the pool the way it is?

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:38 AM

@7:19

add the arcade fire. they suck nuts.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 1:59 AM

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 2:14 AM

11:44 PM

you're stupid.

real music fans show up to free shows without knowing all the bands all the time. because guess what? that's how people heard new music back in the day. get with it. most pool parties i didn't know every band but i did end up becoming a fan of most of them. that's the point of having 3 bands playing.

also when i said BMSR weren't anything special to look at i meant their live show, not how they looked. they were just standing on stage in one spot the entire time looking at their instruments.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 7:59 AM

I thought about going to MGMT but went for Taj instead

Taj Mahal & Skatelites were both great, the weather cleared up when both played and it wasn't too crowded at all. A very fun afternoon.

You're poorly educated.

No, I'm right.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2008 9:32 AM

hey guys. mgmt isn't a hipster band anymore. they're signed to a major label and get lots of time on mtv.

stop pretending how pissed you were you didn't get into the show and start shitting on all the regular people that like your no longer esoteric group.
