a benefit for the Schramms' Terry Karydes @ Maxwell's

DOWNLOAD: The Schramms - Wild Innoncence (live @ Bowery) (MP3)

Schramms

Melding pop, folk-rock, and alt-country sounds with quirky wit and a keen intelligence, the Schramms were the brainchild of gifted guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Dave Schramm, who debuted the group in 1987. Schramm, who had previously played with Human Switchboard and Jon Klages, left Yo La Tengo in 1986, following the release of their debut album, Ride the Tiger, and he soon began working up material with fellow Human Switchboard alumnus Ron Metz and drums and bassist Terry Karydes, who had played in an embryonic version of Yo La Tengo. After Karydes' bass was stolen, she moved over to keyboards, and Mike Lewis, another former member of Yo La Tengo, took over on bass, with guitarist Todd Novak and sax player Pete Linzell filling out the lineup. [All Music]
This show is listed on the Maxwell's schedule: "Fri. 9/5 Benefit For Terry Karydes feat. Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Georgia Hubley (Yo La Tengo), Glenn Mercer (The Feelies), Kate Jacobs, Tammy Faye Starlite, Dave Schramm, Ron Metz and Al Greller 9 p.m. $15". No ticket info (or info on why a benefit is needed) yet. Yo La Tengo are also playing McCarren Pool. The Feelies are also playing Bowery and Music Hall.

Not to be snarky, but the allmusic bio refers to Terry Karydes as "she" while everyone in the above photo appears to be male.

She has been living with Parkinson's for 10 years and her expenses are enormous.

I am stunned to hear that Terry has Parkinson's. I will be at the benefit.

Dear All, thank you for your interest. Parkinsons gradually destroys the body's ability to move (interior and exterior muscles), breathe, speak, etc. We with "pd" (as we call it) move irregularly:slowly, shaking, shuffling, writhing, staggering. When medication works we may appear normal for hours, then freeze suddenly like a sick game of red-light-green-light. Insurance covers a limited portion of the costs incurred in our battle to hold back its degenerative process. Current medical treatments alleviate symptoms, have heavy side effects, and are not curative. Most physical exercise and stress reduction programs; transportation, in-home care, pain management; and nutritional and complimentary therapies, are outside the coverage of standard insurance. Some drug co-pays are as much as $70/mo. for instance. Long term care insurance must be purchased separately. This is just a quick answer, not comprehensive. The good news is, doctors now say that playing music helps maintain neural pathways and regenerative abilities (brain plasticity). Thank you for the opportunity to communicate about this.
