a letter from Deer Tick (who didn't play McCarren Pool)
Deer Tick @ McCarren Pool, NYC - Aug 10, 2008 (Free Williamsburg)

Dear Greater New York City Area,"War Elephant" is one of my favorite albums of 2007.I was really excited to perform at the McCarren Pool Party yesterday [August 10, 2008]. The plan was for me to fly from Memphis to NYC yesterday morning and head straight to the pool. My first flight was delayed, so I missed my connection, and my new connection was eventually cancelled. My guitar spent the night in Newark while I spent the night in Atlanta. Needless to say, this experience was not nearly as cool as playing with the incredible lineup at the pool would have been. I'm really sorry that all of this happened, but on a more positive note, I'll be back to NYC soon to play a show for all of you that were excited to see us. On an even more positive note, I'm excited to tell you that I've signed to a new label and "War Elephant" will be re-released on vinyl and CD very soon. More details to come.
Sincerely,
John McCauley III
Deer Tick
Deer Tick didn't play the pool yesterday, but The Felice Brothers, Langhorne Slim, and Eli 'Paperboy" Reed still did.

Langhorne Slim killed it. although it was probably least attended pool party of any I've been to and I've been to many.

I should add understandable considering the stormy weather, and the fact many people were probably hung over from seeing Radiohead 2 days straight.

Sadly, I still haven't been to McCarren Pool this season and Deer Tick were the reason I wanted to go yesterday. Sounds like those that could push through the Radiohead hangover got a great show, though.

People must have been "tic"ked"!

I must say the old dude who was front and center on the rail, sitting in his freaking folding chair was pretty lame/hilarious, depending on your predisposition to that sort of thing...

Langhorne Slim should be the biggest thing in the world.

it was empty. there were as many people playing dodgeball as there were watching the show.

How were The Felice Brothers?

Every member of Felic Brothers was extremely wasted...hilarious and they still pulled off a great set

"The plan was for me to fly from Memphis to NYC yesterday morning and head straight to the pool"

probably didnt have a place to crash for the night, so had to get in and out in one day?

It was sad that three great acts didn't get a bigger crowd, but I guess that is what happens when you have bead weather, and a huge festival just a stone's throw away.
I have a ton of photos fromthe show up on flickr.

langhorne needs an ego check. he certainly thinks he's the biggest thing in the world. but! felice brothers really stole that one. thanks, bros.

"probably didnt have a place to crash for the night, so had to get in and out in one day?"
There are 8 million people in NYC, and none of them is his friend?

Oh yeah, I'm sure he threw down the hundreds of dollars on a plane ticket because he didn't have a place to crash.... That makes perfect sense.

"Oh yeah, I'm sure he threw down the hundreds of dollars on a plane ticket because he didn't have a place to crash.... That makes perfect sense."
Then how do YOU propose someone who wants to come to NYC but lacks a place to stay the night travel here? If anything, the money saved by not paying for lodging can go towards the cost of a plane ticket.

Or perhaps he had somewhere to be the day after the show. If he's playing McCarren Pool, he probably knows at least one or two people in the area. Just a guess.

he was on vacation in memphis, which he ended early to fly up for the show.
the rest of the band drove down from providence.
it had nothing to do with a place to stay.
