Brooklyn people look different, Pool Parties going to Austin, Portland, San Francisco & Nashville
McCarren Pool, Sunday July 27, 2008 (Faith-Ann Young)

"This is the coolest place to people-watch," said Bryan Murphy, 20, a University of Connecticut student who commutes to the pool on the 85-minute Metro North train from Bridgeport. "People in Brooklyn are different than people anywhere else. They just look different."Both of those quotes are from the same NY Times article that revealed that Yo La Tengo are playing the last Pool Party.and
Next year JellyNYC's "pool parties" will open in offbeat performance spaces in Austin, Tex.; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; and Nashville, said Alexander Kane, the company's founder. Without a secure plan for a replacement site, though, they could easily disappear from New York.
The above pic was taken at Sunday's MGMT show. More pics by Faith-Ann @ Flickr. Pics from the same show by Bao, HERE

He "commutes" to the pool? What, he works there?

Y'know - I was thinking about the Pool Parties a couple of days ago. My reflex is to complain about all the douchebags from the Manhattan and bridge n' tunnel crowd that show up to these and make it a pain for people that live in the neighborhood to get in.
But then again, said douchebags are being exposed to good music that most of them would never take a chance and buy a ticket to see. I guess what I'm trying to say is that while it sucks for people that live in the neighborhood and want to go to the shows - it benefits these bands that are generally ignored by mainstream America. This is one of the few times they get to be heard besides the odd Conan O'Brien appearance.
OK - rant over.

OMG... Is she doing the ELAINE DANCE?
Posted by Buzz Toast | August 1, 2008 9:38 AM
she is damn cute. i might have to ask her not to dance like it's a damn phish show, but outside of that minor setback, cute cute cute. and i concur on the hipbone comment, yes!
Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2008 9:39 AM
of course it was at the MGMT show

good music? you mean like MGMT? that sort of music almost makes me miss mainstream america (but just almost).

I predict she will be the next decomposing body to be found at the pool.

I don't know about you guys, but I like Starbucks. I don't drink coffee and I don't know what planet you live on when you think Sonic Youth or Radiohead (or more importantly John Coltrane) is superfluous because its tied to corporate sponsorship. What Jelly NYC is great because its using sponsorship to make up for inadequacy in knowing how to book. You get what you pay for and there is no band that sort of defeats how much fun water slides are, fiscally.
Regardless of what people that like sarcasm to much want to say, company's have to market to our age demographic for financial purposes and I'm way more stoked that Nike is hosting Boadrum than Boadrum this year sucking as bad as last year.
Also, the Gathering of the Vibes is this weekend and Phish won't be there and maybe if we had more corporate sponsorship and less whiny people, Connecticut would have less vibes gathered and more fucking Sonic Youth.

and i'm way less, um, stocked because the boredoms will not be there so it basically amounts to one big fucking nike drum circle.

Please stop being so fucking ignorant and self-righteous.
Thank you.

That woman is definitely over twenty. Young teen girls don't have laugh lines like hers.

listen David McCaffredy, even if you live a bridge or tunnel away from brooklyn doesn't mean that you don't live 'in the area' i live 45 minutes away from brooklyn and i go down there for shows all the time. because that's where the shows are. and when there is a show at maxwells i go to new jersey. it's all the same area.
okay so not all of us can afford to live in brooklyn, but that doesn't mean we're douchebags and you wouldn't be able to tell us apart from the people who are at the shows who live down the street because we're all just music fans. you're not 'better' or more 'into the scene' because you live down the block from DbA. or because you're some guy who moved from the midwest and his parents bought him a place in williamsburg, or even if you're some kid who grew up in park slope, it doesn't matter. Just for once, think about the music, christ.

"all the douchebags from the Manhattan and bridge n' tunnel crowd that show up to these and make it a pain for people that live in the neighborhood to get in."
This actually brought up a good point that I decided to look into further. After extensive research: city ordinances, borough specific statutes, parks department regulations; it seems that the pool is not, in fact, reserved for residents of Williamsburg/Greenpoint.
I know, I know, it came as a shock to me too. But according to the information I've received, David, the fact that you've made the long and arduous journey from from Bumblefuck, Ohio and have lived in New York for almost 6 months does not entitle you to part ownership of the pool. Now I'm not saying its fair, and if I had my way everyone attending events at the pool would have to have skinny jeans, an out of state license, one of those two tiered bicycles. But until we change the system I guess you're just gonna have to suck it up, Dave.

" Without a secure plan for a replacement site, though, they could easily disappear from New York."
Oh GOD NO....
What would we do if Jelly disappeared from New York? It would be the end of poorly organized free concerts.

They look different by looking the same.
Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2008 11:18 AM
okay so you won't miss them 11:16 but they've brought a lot of joy to my life int he last two years. better organized than siren. now siren i wouldn't mind giving up.

no, not missing the point, dumbfuck. i was there, it was fun, and the volume engulfing you was obviously something you don't get at a drum circle - but other than that there was not much more artistic merit to it than a drum circle.

if you haven't realized that williamsburg has become part of mainstream america, then... what can I say. I guess we have different understandings of the term "underground". any corporate environment is part of mainstream society, even if it's on a low level. you won't find 'avantgarde' or 'underground' anywhere near jellyNYC or bowery presents.
Posted by un:art:ig | August 1, 2008 12:59 PM
OK, what's up with the 'bridge and tunnel' Memphis comment? I'm from Memphis originally. Nashville isn't exactly the greatest city in the world.
Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2008 1:01 PM
also, "bridge and tunnel" refers to, among others, people from brooklyn--you fucking morons--who take the tunnel into manhattan.
i hate you pussies, and i am one of you.

>no, not missing the point, dumbfuck. i was there, it was fun, and the volume engulfing you was obviously something you don't get at a drum circle - but other than that there was not much more artistic merit to it than a drum circle.
Some context:
The opening scene in Don Delillo's Mao II is a mass wedding of Moonies performed in a Yankee Stadium. A pair of parents watch, mystified and helpless as their daughter is married in the ceremony, solidifying her link to the cult she has joined. As he watches row after row, thousands of brides and grooms marching across the field, her father thinks:
"There is a strangeness down there that he thought he'd never see in a ballpark. They take a time-honored event and repeat it, repeat it, repeat it until something new enters the world."
Posted by Aaron | August 1, 2008 1:16 PM
That's what I don't get. Memphis and Nashville don't have subways or really, any public transportation to speak of. Therefore 12:07 describing Memphians as 'bridge and tunnel' is STUPID. I've been to shows in Nashville (second only to Houston as worst city in the US in my opinion) and there are morons there just like anywhere. Memphis has problems but it's real.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2008 1:38 PM
un:art:ig, you must only go to shows in someones basement with 5 people. thus making you very hip and underground. aside from mgmt i don't think any of the bands that played the pool were on a major label. and if you asked your average person about them they probably wouldn't know who they were. you see that's how it's not mainstream.
the other day someone told me Death by Audio and Market Hotel were commercialized and mainstream. I really don't get what standards you people are working on.

I'm surprised no one has commented on this part of the article (unless they did and I just didn't notice):
“All the soul from this neighborhood is going to be gone if these concerts and the films and everything else that happens at the pool is gone,” Mr. Kane said. “Then this neighborhood just turns into any other neighborhood that was settled by artists, and then the artists have to leave.”
Does anyone else find it strange that this Jelly NYC guy is taking full credit for creating the "soul" of the neighborhood?

"People in Brooklyn are different than people anywhere else. They just look different."
That is because they are most likely not from Brooklyn and have traveled from someplace other than Bridgeport. For the most part if you live in Williamsburg, Ft. Greene, etc. Brooklyn is most likley your current residence-- not where you are from.

At no point did I put a value on anything. Mainstream, underground… who gives a shit? As long as it rocks your boat it rocks your boat. I personally couldn’t care less. To claim the Pool Parties to be not mainstream though is never the less funny. Liars are on Mute, which is far from being a tiny diy label, so is 4AD and the Breeders. What you they call Alternative or Independent has long been consumed by the masses, if it was ever anything other than mainstream in the first place.
But actually that wasn’t even what I was talking about. I was targeting the infrastructure of said events. It is a commercial one, a mainstream one. Now you tell me why stating such facts would leave a sour aftertaste with you?!
In one respect though you are right, personally I do prefer basement type shows, things at the silent barn or ABC No Rio for example. This makes me hip?! Please….. I am as much of a douche-schmuck as the random bowery/T5 type. I just don’t enjoy art and entertainment in a corporate environment, most likely because I already get enough of that from 9 to 5…
