Cat Power @ Lollapalooza 2008, Chicago - pics ++ tour dates

photos by Bao Nguyen

Cat Power @ Lollapalooza

"While her band does not appear as debonair as handsome Fred Astaire, Cat Power's appearance onstage rivaled Audrey Hepburn's skinny jean-ed appearance in Funny Face --equally as vigorous but with twice the depth. Lost in the Funny Face memories of my youth, I was somewhat intimidated when there appeared no short-haired, dainty, or anorexic woman in front of me. In her place, there was a toned, anything-but-fragile women wearing the mantra "People have the power," intent on wooing an audience with belted bits and pieces of blues-like emotion.

Of course, Cat Power does not disappoint. Audiences may initially be lulled in by sweet music and somewhat insightful lyrics, but when all boils down, she needs only to captivate by voice. This particular performance was offset by what we'll say were soundboard malfunctions (At one point a couple of disgruntled fans began chanting "Kill the soundboard guy"); however, the performance maintained professional fluidity mainly through vocal dexterity(Well, and a very patient band)."... where does the name Cat Power come from? does that mean, Pussy Power?

Her voice is beautiful...and so is she, but this show was kind of a snooze. Maybe it had to do with the weak sound, but I just don't think she's a festival act. Needed to see this set in a club.

"where does the name Cat Power come from? does that mean, Pussy Power?"

Silly goose. It has to do with the ticket selling power of everyone's favorite Broadway hit, Cats. Duh?

My grandpa used to wear a hat that said Cat Power. It's a tractor company named Caterpillar or something, right?

Anyone got a link to the Richard Avedon photo from the New Yorker where she's showing her pubes?

I liked her better live neurotic, crazy and unable to finish songs -- great records though.

"My grandpa used to wear a hat that said Cat Power."

GO BACK TO THE MIDWEST, FARMBOY!

"Of course, Cat Power does not disappoint"

because you have been lucky, she can be very disappointing live.

is Judah Bauer still touring with her? I read the Blues Explosion are about to come back.

Blues is number one!

"Chan Marshall didn't adopt her Cat Power alter ego in solidarity with feline empowerment. The indie vocalist once spotted the phrase "Cat Diesel Power" on a trucker hat advertising Caterpillar heavy machinery."

So she could have called herself John Deere? Nice...

>>So she could have called herself John Deere? Nice...

...don't give anyone ideas...

I checked out Cat Power's set at Lolla with my best friend from Chi. He remembered well the days of being at 'Cat meltdown' gigs, and I saw her happily prancing barefoot around the stage at Town Hall in NYC-fresh out of Rehab 6/9/06-it wasn't all that inspiring.
Her set at Lolla was inspiring to us FWIW.
What we appreciated about her gig at Lolla was; no BS banter with the crowd, not ONE complaint about the AWFUL bass buzz in the mix. She ignored all that-unthinkable several years ago! View the pix, and her version of CCR's 'Fortunate Son' was a highlite.

great shot of the cameras shooting her.

"I read the Blues Explosion are about to come back."

Is this true? Jon's still touring with Heavy Trash and Russell just put out that record w/ Dan the Automater, so I was worried this hiatus was going to last a while longer. Does anyone have any definite info about this? Be great to have them back.
(But in the meantime - can't wait for Maxwell's on Sunday.)

She is annoying. People have the power? Yeah.... go do another Debeers commercial again Chan. Oh and totally fuck over Cat Stevens aka whateva his name is and use his song he doesn't have the rights to anymore you EVIL ugly retard.

Posted by jameskittie | August 5, 2008 12:33 PM

Yikes! I didn't even look at the pixs..She has gotten so haggard lookin too. UGH..

Posted by jameskittie | August 5, 2008 12:35 PM

Thanks for sharing , James..

anyone offer you any commercials lately ?
...and I already know that you'd say you wouldn't do it but thats an easy statement to make knowing full well that you'll never ever be in that position or have to actually make that decision..

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 12:47 PM

You're very welcome and I know the truth HURTS. Heres your answer.

I would NEVER use someone elses beautiful music about love to sell products for the MOST unethical companies in the world...nor would ANY musican with a brain or morals, not all musicans make art for MONEY. FOr Chan brainless MArshall to be wearing a'People have the power' shirt is not only hypocritical but retarded. She is not bright at ALL just watch her being interviewed. She is a souless, disgusting, immoral humanbeing and it looks like her karma is starting to catch her because she looks like shes aged 10 years in the past 2.

Posted by jameskittie | August 5, 2008 1:14 PM

yo does anyone have any pics from everyone dancing on the ice carts at girl talk? would like to see if so..

Posted by jill | August 5, 2008 1:17 PM

Now that I look at the pics again I have to say she is starting to look like a man actually.

Posted by jameskittie | August 5, 2008 1:17 PM

Feist is looking kinda old.

Posted by trash talking sandwich | August 5, 2008 1:32 PM

no fair that she got stuck opening for dumb ol jack johnson. i wouldve liked to catch her at APW.

Posted by sarah | August 5, 2008 1:33 PM

Since she's the ultimate "The Crazy", that means she is definitely great in the sack.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:56 PM

...damn sexists & ageists
she's like 35 for christsakes...Id say she looks really good or at least fairly typical for her age..
let see what you look like at her age with a telephoto lens in the midday sun..

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:52 PM

Nope just against Dumb, HELLA ugly wenches that are whores for money. Debeers--man she couldn't get any more evil.

Posted by jameskittie | August 5, 2008 4:32 PM

I have to agree she is really fucking stupid. She really lucked out early and got in w/ the hip crowd cuz she is a total idiot. Feist is more talented and has a better voice. They both kinda look like shit though...

Posted by comments | August 5, 2008 7:50 PM

aren't these the exact same "sound" problems she supposedly had at Terminal 5 last year?

The truth is that she can't really belt out a song, so HER OWN soundperson can't get her loud enough for everyone to hear her unless he pushes her vocal up to the point where it feeds back.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 10:39 PM

Posted by comments | August 6, 2008 10:40 PM

Cat Power may be an evil moron, but to say that Feist is a better musician is truly evil!!!
