Cat Power came after Rodrigo y Gabriela on the main stage Sunday. It was raining. I decided it was worth getting a little wet so I stood there getting wet (I didn't bring an umbrella and I'm too cool to wear a poncho). Like they did at Lollapalooza, Chan Marshall and band blazed through an hour set that was a mix of the bluesier, big-band new stuff and the mellower old stuff that I like better. Better or not, her whole set was worth paying attention to and then it stopped raining (though it would start again later in the day). At that point I decided to make the best of the rest of Sunday. Also, I had never seen the new version of The Secret Machines. More pictures and recap below...

Cat Power...

As previously mentioned, I saw Rogue Wave after Amadou y Mariam and they sounded great. Their very young crowd all got very excited when the song from the Zune commercial came on. It is a good song. Someone I was talking to said that one day Rogue Wave will write a hit pop song and they'll be huge. Seems reasonable. Their All Points West performance definitely made me like them as a live band for the first time.

After Cat Power came The Secret Machines on a smaller stage. It's weird to say, but I think it's been years since the last time I saw them. They have a different lineup now which was also kind of weird. I didn't love it. I used to think they had a lot of Pink Floyd in them. Someone pointed out that they "sounded like Rush" at All Points West. I kind of agreed. You could say that The Secret Machines and Earl Greyhound combined were the classic rock segment of the festival.

I've never seen or heard Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. That didn't change at All Points West. Kyle had fun taking pictures of them though...

Grace is super hot and super sweet. What's not to like about a girl rocking a flying V? I met her at Mountain Jam two years ago when she ran up to the stage to see My Morning Jacket play. I knew right then she was alright and I've been a fan ever since. Her set on sunday was great, as were some others, like Rogue Wave, Cat Power, R & G, and Trey. It's a shame that more people didn't come out to see it.

Why, yes -- I'd love to play Grace's Flying V.

"I'm too cool to wear a poncho"

ponchos were cool enough for clint eastwood - they should be cool enough for you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 6:54 PM

I would interact genitally with it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 7:02 PM

So where is the report on Jack Jackson and Trey Anastasio?

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 7:11 PM

I want to see Chan in that outfit Emily had on.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 7:19 PM

Yeah, come on BV. WHERE's DA JACK JOHNSON SCOOP?

Posted by Jersey Turd | August 12, 2008 7:22 PM

"Amadou y Mariam"

Don't they bill themselves as Amadou et Mariam (i.e., in French)?

Also, Harry Potter >>>>>> Col. Potter of M*A*S*H >>>>>> Grace Potter

Cat Power was really kinda lame and I looked forward to seeing her. Her band was seemingly disinterested. Also She has a dentist as her drummer, or maybe he is a therapist, or something other than drummer. Anyway it seemed weird

Posted by gracehotness | August 12, 2008 7:41 PM

I knew a girl in my past, that got braces twice - I bet you both them chicks had a lot of dental work done. Guess you can do that when you filthy rich like both of them.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 7:50 PM

Cat Power has been wearing the same outfit at every concert for two years now.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 7:56 PM

sorry, maybe this will earn me a lot of haters, but i really cannot stand performance shots of chan marshall anymore.

i find them discomforting.

There once was a girl name of Chan
She was bonkers but gosh did she PWN!!
But as she got better
Her muse up and left her
And now she's an absolute yawn.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 8:30 PM

That's great. How 'bout this?

There once was a girl named Chan
Who sanity some said had gone
But she kept her composure,
And said, "Me crazy? No, sir."
And then dropped trou for Dick Avedon

9:14 -- not bad, but 8:30 had better meter.

>>Also She has a dentist as her drummer, or maybe he is a therapist, or something other than drummer.

Thats Jim White from the great Australian band Dirty Three !

In addition to Cat Power he has played with Smog, Will Oldham, Nick Cave, Nina Nastasia and many others... so put that in your crack pipe and smoke it !

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 9:29 PM

jim white is one of the 10 best drummers in rock history. that he's also a capable dentist just blows my mind.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 10:13 PM

What time did Trey Anastasio go on?

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 10:16 PM

jim white is a good drummer, which makes him a good therapist

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 11:52 PM

too cool for a poncho?
apparently you're cool enough for pneumonia!

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2008 11:57 PM

7:10 - emily who?

Posted by fact | August 13, 2008 12:02 AM

7:19 - nm, i got it.

Posted by fact | August 13, 2008 12:03 AM

Rogue Wave played in front of 75 people at Union Hall Saturday night and totally killed it!

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 12:43 AM

I love Chan and will see her every chance I get but I walked away from Sunday's set thinking, "eh?" It was my friend's first time seeing her and she thought I was crazy for loving her so much.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 12:48 AM

nothing on Trey? that is bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 1:51 AM

did you people miss the "to be continued...." part at the bottom?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 1:58 AM

emily from metric

Chan is just beyond hot. her voice shrivels me testes ina way that no other woman cam. and I mean that in a most sexy way. she deserves many babies on her name. A beatiful/sexy woman that pours her heart out insongs deres al the repecta nd the horniness from guys that value her skill and talent...even if the impossible dream of sleeping with her is emedded in any of this.

beautiful, decent,
smart, charming
she's all that, and then some more for her to discover yet.

Posted by shadow | August 13, 2008 3:54 AM

Rule 34 and Cat Power, anyone? Please?

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 6:40 AM

"Also She has a dentist as her drummer, or maybe he is a therapist, or something other than drummer. Anyway it seemed weird"

I also heard that this freak walk and talk at the same time, weird, very weird...

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 7:04 AM

I came across Grace Potter and the Nocturnals performing on WFUV a few months ago and really liked them.

"jim white is one of the 10 best drummers in rock history. that he's also a capable dentist just blows my mind."

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 9:43 AM

what happened to chan's beauty mark?

oh... and while she does wear that outfit a lot, she didn't wear it the last time she played nyc.

"I came across Grace Potter"...

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 10:28 AM

Zach Rogue is a big douchebag. HUGE.

Posted by Anonymous | August 13, 2008 1:24 PM

Rogue Wave are boring! Why are they still touring? One hit song, and they'll be huge? More like huge douchebags!

Posted by Anon | August 13, 2008 3:10 PM

Do you know Zack Rogue personally or are you just being an asshole? He may not be the most original songwriter or performer out there, but is that reason enough to call him a huge douchebag?

A list of people we know to be "huge douchebags": Anne Coulter, Steven Seagal, Gene Simmons, Dennis Miller, Dennis Rodman...and Zack Rogue? Get a life, bozo...

Posted by Anon | August 14, 2008 9:37 AM

you didn't see dennis miller when he did "Weekend Update" in the 80s, did you?
