CD Baby sells business to Disc Makers

"But now my new projects are exciting me so much that I decided to hand over CD Baby to someone that's going to make it better than ever for you. I chose Disc Makers as the new owner because their president Tony Van Veen has been one of my favorite people for years, and I always felt they'd do a better job of running CD Baby than I would." [CD Baby founder Derek Sivers]

Doesn't it seem a bit irresponsible/unnecessary to announce to your customer base that you're selling because you like the person you're selling it to?

Ah, it's just another monopoly in the music world, albeit on the smallest playing field possible. Speaking as someone that's used both these services for years, I see it as pretty bad for CD Baby users -- discmakers has incredibly inept customer service (as I found out in the last weeks) and CD Baby, while somewhat archaic, has created a fantastic service for indie musicians. We'll see how this pans out.

Maybe that's why I'm suddenly getting e-mail from the. Haven't ordered from them in maybe 3 or 4 years -- then all of a sudden a few days ago I started getting "here's some CDs you might wanna buy" e-mails.

Considering CD Baby never manufactured CDs or anything, it was essentially pointless for a musician to waste money on the service after services like Tunecore began providing iTunes/Amazon distribution to anyone who paid a few bucks. You could always just sell CDs at shows.

Turns out Discmakers is owned by a NYC investment bank called Corinthian. There goes the indie vibe!

Hopefully they will do away with CD Baby's horrible, amateurish logo.
Or better yet, change the name entirely.
