Dirty Projectors & lightning @ South Street Seaport - pics
photos by Lucas Flores Piran

The Friday evening (August 15, 2008) rain caused the cancellation of an outdoor NYC performance involving 200 guitarists, but like Regina Spektor's gig in Brooklyn, the free show at South Street Seaport went on... it just went on for a slightly shorter period of time than originally planned. Opener White Williams played four songs. Dirty Projectors played for around 50 minutes. It was a not-that-short headlining set that included one new song - the same new song they played at Music Hall of Williamsburg in April, and a song that will likely appear on the new album they're working on in Portland for Domino Records. More Dirty Projectors pics below...

note: the second photo BV posted is one second before the bolt shot (dave jumps, is in the air, and LANDS with a lightning bolt). Totally awesome.

Was that what White Williams normally sounds like performing? I was under the impression he did danceable music.

Does anyone have a setlist? I'd really like to know what that last song they played was (the one they said was an "old song")...

I don't remember the order, but they played:
Gimme gimme gimme
Depression
"new song"
Fucked for Life
New New Attitude
Police Story
Imagine It (I think this was the last one you're referring too. Funny they called it old as it's on the same 2006 EP as Fucked for Life)

white williams was weird. his CD is pretty dancey indie-electronic thing but what he played live was just weird. i've seen him play New Violence before and it did not sound like that. he slowed it down and added unnecessary noise and reverb. it was just a bad call on his part. they made all the songs sound slightly off, i have no idea why.
Dirty Projectors were fantastic. the lightening was terrifying.

white williams has zero stage presence and he's completely boring to watch.

ty for the setlist. i really liked the song that i think is called 'new new attitude' what album is that on?
Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 10:55 AM
i agree WW has no stage presence. he also kind of refused to look at the audience and wouldn't take the stupid echo off his mic when he was talking to us.
Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 10:57 AM
the song, New Attitude is from the EP, New Attitude.
Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 10:59 AM
yeah, he never takes the echo off. i hope i never have to see him again. i've been unfortunate to catch him a few times opening for other bands. he's never been good.

"the song, New Attitude is from the EP, New Attitude." ...no, it's not, but a pretty good live recording can be found here: http://www.daytrotter.com/download/311/id=383

projectors are an insanely good band live. too bad it doesn't really translate on to disc.

thanks so much for the new new attitude link :D

on record whtie williams is god.

Yeah, the Projectors tend to come across a bit weedy on disc, they need to somehow get the energy of their live show on their next recording.

they are so friggin awesome...I was sad the set was cut short by the storm or the noise ordinance at the seaport...wasn't sure which one. the lighting timing exactly with the music was surreal

Thanks for that. Yeah, on the disc I'm listening to now it sounds completely different from what it was live; almost anemic. They should really just record the songs live, Albini style.
