Isaac Hayes, RIP
Isaac Hayes @ Celebrate Brooklyn - June 12, 2008 (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)

Soul legend Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy and Academy awards for the theme to the 1971 film ``Shaft'' and voiced the character ``Chef'' in the hit comedy series ``South Park,'' died Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 65.Bernie Mac died only one day earlier. Sad and weird. Weird because Bernie and Isaac just made a movie together called Soul Men..Family members found Hayes laying unconscious next to a running treadmill in his basement around 1 p.m. local time, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in a telephone interview. Hayes was pronounced dead at Baptist East Hospital. No autopsy is planned, Shular said. [Bloomberg]
Soul music icon Isaac Hayes will play himself in a music comedy starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac. "Soul Men" revolves around two former bandmates (Jackson, Mac) who reunite when a third member (played by John Legend) dies....IMDB adds that the reunion performance takes place at the Apollo Theater. The movie release date is November 14, 2008.

Isaac Hayes & Bernie Mac, RIP.
Pictures and a review of Isaac's very recent show in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, HERE.

Very sad.
Here's another cool video of Isaac Hayes I found shot on the set of Shaft:

I'm going to miss Isaac Hayes, but I'm glad I saw him at Prospect Park. If I didn't see him live, it would've been even sadder. Thanks Hayes. I look forward to seeing Soul Men. Your music & memory will live on. RIP.

this is sad, and strange about that movie.

i noticed he played a show on july 3 in portland. not sure if he played any others. i feel privileged to have seen him.

Prospect Park was not the last show. I believe the Portland one was. I was also at Prospect Park and it was fantastic only made bittersweet with this news. Lucky for those of us who ventured out to it. Also, the Portland show is available as a soundboard recording at various places on the net. Search for it. I have been listening to it all day at home and it is so so good. Find the Live at The Sahara Tahoe cd as well. Sadly he was about to record a record for Stax before he died. It was going to be new tracks plus some old tracks he recorded years ago for the label and never finished.
I do find it weird though about the whole dying by the treadmill news. If you were at the Prospect Park show you would see that Issac really had trouble walking. He needed help getting on and off the stage. I doubt he was on a treadmill.
RIP Issac. You will be missed

Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. one of the best arrangers, composers in music. His 12min 1969 re-interpretation on "Walk On By" just amazing to this day.

another sudden heart attack. He should have lived another 20 years. This should remind you, don't take your parents for granted, they leave so suddenly sometimes.

Damn ... got to meet him in '94, was a pa on the Funky Junky video. On the last day of the shoot he actually made a point to come around and thank everyone personally and shake hands.

"another sudden heart attack. He should have lived another 20 years. This should remind you, don't take your parents for granted, they leave so suddenly sometimes."
Good advice. I'd add not only don't take your parents for granted. Don't take any of those you care about for granted, including yourself. Life is delicate and cut short more often than not.
Isacc was a seemingly musically gifted gentleman. He'll be missed.

While the cicumstances aren't what anyone would wish for, it's great to see all of the positive outpour. Good vibes and best wishes to the Hayes family.

I was at that Brooklyn concert, and I hate to say it, but I thought something was wrong with him. Not only did he have great difficulty getting on and off stage, but his band was terrible.
Isaac, you will be missed.

Village voice blog post from 2 months ago:
That picture you got there of Isaac is stunningly bad-ass by the way. He was the shit in Escape from New York. That car he's standing next to is actually a spaceship that will transport his soul to meet his scientologist savior Xenu in Omega Centauri located in NGC 10437 otherwise known as the Bullshit Galaxy. On arriving he will be disappointed to learn that Xenu is indeed a big pussy which will promptly lead to an inevitable cold blooded beatdown and subsequent dethroning of Xenu at the hands of Isaac Hayes resulting in him becoming exalted grand Imperial Master of the Universe. His first orders of business are to reverse the decision to make mission impossible 4 and to greenlight Battlefield Earth 2. This sequel will eventually cause the imminent destruction of the known universe and a huge tear in the fabric of the space-time continuum. The universe will indeed be destroyed by chef from South Park.

Second that 8:33. "Walk On By" is a beautiful arrangement that shows how talented Isaac was as a singer and composer.

R.I.P. Black Moses aka the great Isaac Hayes. "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" is the jam of jams, still shocking today...

Sam and others critical of his Celebrate Brooklyn show: Hayes had several small strokes in the past few years, leaving him less ambulatory and certainly less expressive. His band was outstanding and, while Hayes' sparse performance was a bit sad to watch, the band provided more than enough spark and funk to make most of the audience dance or, at least, sway to the music. An enjoyable show, with a lively version of the Theme from Shaft at its conclusion.
